The decoction of the stem barks from Bowdichia virgilioides KUNTH is a folk remedy used to treat inflammatory disorders in Latin American and Brazil. In the present study, the wound healing activity of aqueous extract of the stem bark from B. virgilioides, called AEBv, was evaluated by the rate of healing by wound contraction and period of epithelization at different days post-wound using the wound excisional model. On day 9, the AEBv-treated animals exhibited significative reduction in the wound area when compared with controls. In wound infected with S. aureus, the AEBv significantly improved the wound contraction when compared to the saline-treated mice. The histological analysis showed that AEBv induced a collagen deposition, increase in the fibroblast count and few inflammatory cells than compared to saline-treated group. The expression of collagen type I was increased in the group treated with AEBv as indicated by immunohistochemical staining. In vitro, the AEBv was effective only against S. aureus but not against P. aeruginosa. Together, the results of this study demonstrate, for the first time, the healing and antimicrobiological effects of aqueous extract of the stem bark from B. virgilioides in the therapy of skin wounds.

High rate of dependence on medicinal plants for maintenance of health care needs over the decades in communities all over the world especially in Africa and Asia needs adequate scientific verification and authentication. Liver related diseases have however become a global problem. Jaundice was established on 9 of a total population of 12 rabbits of mixed sex, weighing 1.50kg - 2.34kg using an overdose pretreatment of Rifampicin (300mg/ kg bw) P.O. After 3 days, the Animals were administered with various doses of aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica (600, 750, 900mg/kg bw) P.O for each group of rats – A, B, C and D (control ), after which the animals were bled via marginal ear vein at zero hour, 7th and 14th days and the blood used for the following assays: Alkaline Phosphatase, Acid Phosphatase, Total Bilirubin, Conjugated Bilirubin and Alanine Transaminase. Experimental animals exhibited lack of appetite, reduced activity, scratching of the body, emesis, yellow coloration of the sclera, light-colored stool and a little dark urine over time. There was also increase in the levels of the biochemical parameters as the day increased. Aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) exhibited increasing elevated levels of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Acid Phosphatase (AP), Total Bilirubin (T/Bil), Conjugated Bilirubin (Conj/Bil), and slightly in Alanine Transaminase (ALT), thus exerted elevated hepatotoxicity on Rifampicin-induced Rabbits. Therefore, the traditional use of Azadirachta indica in management of jaundice should be discontinued.

The aim of this research is to investigate the wound healing process in in vitro by combining the Manihot esculenta aqueous extract and therapeutic ultrasound. Firstly, the optimization seeding densities of HSF cell 1184 in six-well plate, and then followed by the scratch assay experiment. The scratched that made was treated with the remedial treatments (Manihot esculenta aqueous extract only; ascorbic acid+ therapeutic ultrasound; Manihot esculenta aqueous extract+ ascorbic acid; Manihot esculenta aqueous extract+ therapeutic ultrasound and also the combination of these three materials). The rate of wound closure was observed and analysed at a time interval of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 24 h by using image J software. Then, the cells viability were analysed using the MTT assay. The result showed that Manihot esculenta aqueous extract coupled with specific dose therapeutic ultrasound represents a significantly high rate of wound closure at 96.10 % with the cell numbers at 5.44×105 cells/mL when compared to the other combination therapy. The finding of this study revealed that Manihot esculenta aqueous extract 200 µg/mL and the therapeutic ultrasound specific dose (3 MHz, 300 mWatt/cm2, 50% in 5 min) have the potential in accelerating wound healing process of cells in in vitro.
