Every advance carries with it potential problems, and longitudinal analysis is no exception. This paper focuses on the problems related to the massive amounts of data generated by longitudinal surveys. It is argued that a proliferation of data may be to the good but it will not necessarily lead to better scientific knowledge. Most demographers think the logical positivist way that theory arises out of empirical generalisations, but massive empirical investigations have only led to disappointing theoretical outcomes in demography. This paper discusses one way out of this impasse - to adopt a different view of theory, a model-based view of science. Theoretical models based on empirical generalisation should become the main representational device in science.

Our study was based on the results of longitudinal research conducted between 2015 and 2021, which examined the schools learning organizations and sought to answer the question of what factors may be most decisive in the operation of schools that can effectively support student achievement, and how they change over time. After describing the theoretical models describing the learning organization of schools, the correlations of quantitative data and models and their five-year change are analyzed.It is clear from the data that educators and leaders see shared goals and a vision, and a willingness to take risks and innovate as the most advanced. There is a lack of responsibility and a collaborative atmosphere, and a dimension of knowledge sharing and partnerships. The shift in primary variables and more advanced statistical analyzes predict the emergence of newer learning organization model alternatives that can more accurately describe changes and areas of learning organization dimensions.

Throughout his life, W.E.B. Du Bois actively engaged the scientific racism infecting natural sciences and popular thought. Nevertheless, he also demonstrated a sophisticated and critical engagement with natural science. He recognized that the sciences were socially situated, but also that they addressed real questions and issues. Debate remains, however, regarding exactly how and why Du Bois incorporated such natural scientific knowledge into his own thinking. In this article, we draw on archival research and Du Bois’ own scholarship to investigate his general approach to interdisciplinarity. We address how and why he fused natural scientific knowledge and the influence of physical environs into his social science, intertwining each with his broader intellectual and political aims. This investigation will offer a fuller understanding of the scope and aims of his empirical scholarship. At the same time, it will illuminate a sociological approach to natural science that can still inform scholarship today.

Purpose People who have lived experiences with suicide often struggle with concealable stigmatized identities that threaten their inclusion and recovery. While disclosure of a stigmatized identity can promote support and recovery and therefore prevent suicide, it may also present distinct risks. The purpose of this paper is to summarize key issues in suicide-related disclosure, suggest theoretical models for describing suicide-related disclosure and identify research needs. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper discusses the existing literature on disclosure of concealable stigmatized identities, then explores research on disclosure of suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and suicide loss. Theoretical models (disclosure processes model and interpersonal theory of suicide) that can be employed in understanding suicide-related disclosure are explored. Finally, the paper suggests areas for future research, including longitudinal research to identify strategic disclosure practices that can lead to greater inclusion and recovery. Findings Research on suicide-related disclosure should differentiate between disclosure of past and current suicidality, incorporate theoretical frameworks and examine approaches for preparing potential confidants and disclosers for the disclosure process. Originality/value This paper highlights issues unique to the disclosure of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and to suicide loss.

AbstractAs increasingly more people experience old age as a time of growth and productivity, theoretical attention to successful ageing is needed. In this paper, we overview historical, societal and philosophical evidence for a deep, long-standing ambivalence about human ageing that has influenced even scientific views of old age. In recent years, however, discussion of the psychological and behavioural processes people use to maintain and reach new goals in late life has gained momentum. We contribute to this discussion the metamodel of selective optimisation with compensation, developed by Baltes and Baltes. The model is a metamodel that attempts to represent scientific knowledge about the nature of development and ageing with the focus on successful adaptation. The model takes gains and losses jointly into account, pays attention to the great heterogeneity in ageing and successful ageing, and views successful mastery of goals in the face of losses endemic to advanced age as the result of the interplay of the three processes, selection, compensation, and optimisation. We review evidence from the biological and social science literatures for each component and discuss new research avenues to study the interaction of the three processes.

The paper problematizes the current situation and development perspectives of social science journals in Serbia in the context of global (international) and national interests. Scientific articles in national social science journals are commonly the most prevalent form of dissemination and production of scientific knowledge, standpoints and views, a clear indicator of research excellence of university teachers, as well as the indicator of the quality of scientific journals, and the quality of scientific research in general. Therefore, it is not surprising that national and global interests and values intertwine in the domain of national journals. The reference framework for the analysis of selected issues is placed within the range of existing scientometric and bibliometric research, as well as the legislation referring to scientific research, manner and procedures for the evaluation of research results, and election to academic titles. The analysis we conducted led to the general conclusion that national social science journals are in a gap between the national and global context. Although their significance is beyond question, by promoting national and cultural values and interests, they exist as insufficiently competitive and globally invisible media for transfer and valorization of scientific knowledge in the academic community. In addition to analyzing the implications of the current education policies, editorial policies of the journals and strategic solutions aimed at raising and evaluating the quality of national social science journals, and integrating them into global information system trends, the paper also proposes potential directions for further development of national social science journals as a prerequisite for raising scientific productivity in the domain of social sciences.
