BackgroundLittle is known about physical therapists’ attitudes, knowledge, and practice approaches regarding people who are obese.ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to determine physical therapists’ attitudes, knowledge, and practice approaches regarding obesity and to explore the relationships between attitudes and knowledge.DesignA prospective paper mail survey was designed to obtain demographic characteristics, attitudes, knowledge, and practice approaches regarding obesity. Participants were randomly selected members of the American Physical Therapy Association.MethodsDescriptive statistics were used to explore physical therapists’ attitudes, knowledge, and practice approaches regarding obesity. Pearson product moment and Spearman rank correlations were used to test the relationships between attitudes and knowledge. The a priori alpha value was set at .05.ResultsThe response rate was 34.5%. Physical therapists indicated that physical inactivity (92.8%, n=320) and overeating (78.5%, n=270) are the most important causes of obesity and that diet modifications and exercise are the most effective treatments. Respondents frequently recommended exercising more (87.4%, n=263) but rarely recommended changes in nutritional habits or referred clients to other health care disciplines. Attitude scores regarding obesity were neutral. The mean knowledge score was 6.7 (of 10). A significant correlation (r=.133, P=.043) was found between the respondents’ knowledge scores and attitudes regarding statements about obesity. Inverse correlations were seen between the respondents’ age and knowledge scores (r=−.195, P<.0005) and between years in practice and knowledge scores (r= −.216, P<.0005).LimitationsThe descriptive nature of this study did not allow for further investigation. The survey questionnaire was adapted from a nonvalidated tool.ConclusionsThe results suggested that physical therapists have neutral attitudes toward people who are obese. Physical therapists appropriately indicated that lack of physical activity and poor nutritional habits contribute to obesity. Younger respondents, who had recently entered the work force, had higher knowledge scores than respondents who were older and had worked longer. Improvements in physical therapists’ referral patterns may assist in the health care team approach to the treatment of obesity. Education to enhance physical therapists’ knowledge about obesity should be emphasized.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the Impact of diabetes continuing education on knowledge and practice of diabetes care among health care professionals in Yemen. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out among health care professionals. The original questionnaire consisted of 22 multiple choice questions. A total of 73 HCPs received continuing education (CE) intervention.  Knowledge attitude and practice (KAP) was assessed using a validated questionnaire.  Results: The result showed that majority of the HCPs has a good general knowledge on diabetes and its managements prior to the CE program. Evaluation of the general knowledge score of the HCPs found some improvement in the knowledge score, however the improvement was not significant (p=0.31). The result of this study found that HCPs has good knowledge on monitoring the sign, symptoms and laboratory parameters. Conclusion: Evaluation of the knowledge score on Goal of Diabetes Management of HCPs found significant (p=0.024) improvement in the knowledge score. The results indicated that the lab values were rated as the most important in the goal for the treatment of diabetes patients.  The study also found no significant difference in practice score after CE program among HCPs.

Background: In the hospital setting, patients are usually cared for by a nurse and multidisciplinary teams which may include physical therapists, social workers, and public health workers. However, students in health care programs usually will not experience interdisciplinary scenarios developing needed skills. Combining classes and replacing certain curriculum activities with patient simulation projects that include several departments may improve their educational experience and success. Simulation is technology used to enhance instruction resources for all students. Simulation not only captures the attention of the video-game generation but actively engages students in the learning process. Simulation can be a valuable experience to keep students actively involved in learning by offering the opportunity to apply knowledge learned to the clinical setting, thus making it real. It is compelling to consider the impact of simulation in increasing the competency of students when they are in the work force while decreasing error rate and impacting the quality of care.Methods: A mixed method approach involved simulation experience followed by data collection via survey.Results: Students across all disciplines reported increased ability for collaboration and communication.Conclusions: Demonstrated the value of introducing the students to teamwork and collaboration experiences via simulation.

Background: In the light of the pandemic COVID 19, world’s attention has turned to the immune system and body’s defense force. Identification of the level of epidemic preparedness and understanding of Ayurvedic, Homeopathic and Siddha regimens among health care workers is required to utilize their services in main stream health care effectively. Aim: The aim of this study to access the knowledge and practices of possible Ayurvedic, Homeopathic and Siddha regimens during novel corona virus pandemic. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken among the health care workers with the help of 15 close ended questions. The one out of six-knowledge question were scored and analysed to identify differences with sociodemographic variables (age and occupation). Response to the three out of five questions on practices were analysed to Identify the differences, differing significantly in both knowledge and practice score. Result: Out of 286 responses, knowledge score significantly differed with age (P-value 0.04) and occupation (P-value 0.01). Practice scores significantly differed with age (P-value 0.01) and occupation (P-value 0.00). Our study shows that 70% of study population is aware of the medicinal properties of Neem, Tulsi and Ashwagandha against COVID 19 and 65% strongly believes the immune boosting effect of Vitamin C and 77% include citrus fruits in their diet. Conclusion: Adopting prophylactic and therapeutic strategies on the basis of Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Siddha are useful to the mankind in fighting against the COVID 19.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of health care workers (HCWs) towards universal precautions (UPs) and to look into any associations between knowledge and practice. Methodology:A cross-sectional study was undertaken between August and October 2012, involving 300 HCWs from four national public hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan. A self-administered questionnaire assessing the knowledge and practice of UPs was used. Results: Among the 300 respondents, the mean knowledge score was 5.2 with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.5. On the practice score, the mean was 8.7 (SD = 2.2). A total of 90.6% and 70.8% of HCWs believed that UPs were necessary in contact with urine/feces and tears, respectively, although UPs are not necessary in these cases. On the other hand, 57.8% reported that they always recapped the needle after giving an injection, and 31.8% did not always change gloves in between patients. There were no associations between the knowledge and self-reported practice of UPs. Conclusions: The HCWs in Kabul had inadequate knowledge and poor practice of UPs. Training for HCWs is needed to encourage them to adhere to practice based on improved knowledge.

Objective: Rabies, one of the oldest and fatal infectious diseases known to human race, is transmitted by infected dogs. The global target of zero dog-mediated rabies human deaths has been set for 2030; however, the realization of this goal poses challenges in most low-income countries where rabies is endemic due to weak surveillance. Dogs have been increasingly deployed for domestic uses over the years, especially for security purposes. This study assessed the assessment of knowledge and practice of vaccination of dogs against rabies by dog owners. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional community-based study was employed to study 400 dog owners in Makurdi metropolis through multistage sampling techniques. Sighting of valid dog vaccination card was used as criteria for current vaccination. Bivariate analysis was carried out to establish the relationship between the respondent knowledge of rabies and dog vaccination with significant value set at P < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 31 (Â ± 0.8) years, majority of them had tertiary and secondary education (40.0% and 39.0%, respectively), 26.0% were traders, and 50.0% were married. Overall, 73.0% of the respondents had good knowledge score, 61.0% had seen at least a rabid dog in their life time, and 74.0% have a history of dog vaccination, but evidence of up to date vaccination of dogs by owners was seen in only 18.0% of all the vaccination cards sighted. The relationship between the educational status of the respondents, their knowledge score, and their dog vaccination was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Knowledge of rabies among dog owners in Makurdi was good, but the practice of dog vaccination was poor. Educational status was a good predictor of practice. Awareness campaign on dog vaccination should be strengthened and adequate measures should be put in place at the veterinary hospitals in Makurdi for vaccination of dogs.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, family physicians (FPs) are the backbone of the healthcare system with considerable impact on the general population, and their well-being is of great importance. The aim of this investigation was to assess FPs mental health, as well as knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) regarding the pandemic, and opinions on non-communicable disease (NCD) health care provided to patients. A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 613 FPs. Anxiety and depression levels were estimated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, subjective perceived stress with the Perceived Stress Scale, while trauma-related symptoms were assessed using the Impact on Event Scale-COVID19. KAPs toward the pandemic and opinions regarding NCD patients were evaluated with questionnaires accordingly. Results have shown that age (β = −0.02, p = 0.013) and personal risk of COVID‑19 (β = 1.05, p < 0.001) were significant independent correlates of the knowledge score. A total of 87.7% FPs expressed moderate/high perceived stress, 45.2% moderate/severe trauma-related symptoms, 60.4% borderline/abnormal anxiety levels, and 52.4% borderline/abnormal depression levels. Knowledge score was an independent predictor of perceived stress (β = −0.33, p = 0.023) and anxiety (β = −0.31, p = 0.006) levels. Limited accessibility to healthcare services and decreased number of newly-diagnosed NCD cases were mostly agreed on. The pandemic puts a considerable strain on FPs mental health, as well as on public health measures, due to the decreased overall quality of NCD patient health care. Educational programs may bridge the gaps between FPs’ knowledge. Thus lowering anxiety and improving patient care.

Abstract Background Translating research into practice is a central priority within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Roadmap. The underlying aim of the NIH Roadmap is to accelerate the movement of scientific findings into practical health care provisions through translational research. Main text Despite the advances in health sciences, emerging infectious diseases have become more frequent in recent decades. Furthermore, emerging and reemerging pathogens have led to several global public health challenges. A question, and to an extent a concern, arises from this: Why our health care system is experiencing several challenges in encountering the coronavirus outbreak, despite the ever-growing advances in sciences, and the exponential rise in the number of published articles in the first quartile journals and even the ones among the top 1%? Conclusion Two responses could be potentially provided to the above question: First, there seems to be a significant gap between our theoretical knowledge and practice. And second that many scholars and scientists publish papers only to have a longer list of publications, and therefore publishing is viewed as a personal objective, rather than for improving communities’ public health.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore experiences of Marshallese adults related to diabetes self-care behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was utilized to understand participants’ diabetes self-care behaviors during the pandemic. Nine focus groups with 53 participants were held via videoconference and conducted in English, Marshallese, or a mixture of both languages. A priori codes based on diabetes self-care behaviors provided a framework for analyzing and summarizing participant experiences. Results: Both increases and decreases in healthy eating and exercise were described, with improvements in health behaviors attributed to health education messaging via social media. Participants reported increased stress and difficulty monitoring and managing glucose. Difficulty obtaining medication and difficulty seeing their health care provider regularly was reported and attributed to health care provider availability and lack of insurance due to job loss. Conclusions: The study provides significant insight into the reach of health education campaigns via social media and provides important information about the reasons for delays in care, which extend beyond fear of contracting COVID-19 to structural issues.

Background: The skill of intravenous cannulation must be practiced regularly to maintain a high level of competency. This is important to gain quick and efficient intravenous access in populations when required. The insertion of intravenous catheters into peripheral veins is probably the most commonly performed invasive medical procedure in hospitals. This procedure could be difficult sometimes requiring several attempts and causing distress to patients. The high success rates of nurses in intravenous cannulation have been due to the frequent performance of intravenous cannulation Objectives: 1. To assess the existing knowledge regarding intravenous cannulation among staff nurses working in selected hospital. 2. To observe the existing practice regarding intravenous cannulation among nurses. 3. To assess the effectiveness of lecture cum demonstration regarding Intravenous cannulation among staff nurses. 4. To observe the practice of staff nurses regarding intravenous cannulation after lecture cum demonstration. 5. To correlate the knowledge and practice of staff nurses regarding intravenous cannulation .Methodology: Pre experimental one group pre test post test design. Material: Structured knowledge questionnaire and Observational checklist adopted as per WHO guidelines.Sample size: 60. Result: Among the 60 samples, according to age, 39(65%)of subjects were of 21-30 years of age, 14(23.33%) were of 31-40 years, 7(11.67%) were of 41-50 years and no subjects were above 50 yearsAccording to the educational qualification, 38(58.33%) of the subjects were with the qualification of general nurse midwives, 12(20%) were B.sc nursing, 13(21.67%) were PB.B.sc Nursing.Majority of the subjects 45% have work experience of less than 2 years, 23.33% have 3-5 years, 20% have 6-8 years and 11.67% of them have work experience of more than 8 years In relation to area of work, 26.67% of the subjects each were from the Medicine ward and surgical ward, 21.66%were from Intensive care unit and 25% of them were from Casualty/Emergency ward. post test majority of the subjects gained Knowledge regarding intravenous cannulation. 34 (56.67%) subjects had good level of Knowledge score and 23(43.33%) subjects had average level of Knowledge. None of the samples have poor level of Knowledge. the post test the findings shows that 57(95%) subjects had satisfactory level of practice whereas only 3(5%) of subjects had unsatisfactory level of practice. The mean pretest knowledge score was 15.28 and post test knowledge score was 26.58. The mean practice score 7.61 and posttest practice score was 13.76. Student’s paired ‘t’ test is applied at 5% level of significance and The calculated‘t’ value for overall knowledge score of subjects was 35.51 and the calculated ‘t’ value for overall practice score of subjects was 23.44 that statistically interpreted that the lecture cum demonstration regarding intravenous cannulation was effective in increasing the Knowledge and practice of subject. There was significant association between selected demographic variable of year of experience with their pretest knowledge, whereas other demographic variables are not significantly associated.The correlation coefficient of post test knowledge and post test practice score was ‘r’ 0.21, which is indicates a positive correlation. Conclusion: The knowledge of the target population was significantly increased, and there was significant improvement in the level of practice after receiving lecture cum demonstration regarding intravenous cannulation. The improvement in knowledge and practice was found in all subjects irrespective of their demographic variable
