Spirituality is considered culturally competent therapeutic intervention for domestic violence survivors. Limited number of studies have specifically emphasized at their experiences and needs. Women with abusive life partners use various strategies to cope , deal and heal from the physical and psychological violence. It is reported that their belief in a higher power is integral to their healing. Thus to study the role of spirituality as a tool for healing among domestic violence survivors , a sample of 50 married women who survived domestic violence were examined. For this purpose, the Revised Conflict Tactics scale (CTS-2; Straus, Hamby, Boney-McCoy & Sugarman, 1996); Daily Spiritual experiences Scale (DSE; Underwood &Teresi, 2002) and Beck Depression Inventory for depressive symptoms were used. Results indicate significant role of spirituality in healing women survivors. The majority reported that spirituality or God was a source of strength or comfort for them. Extent of spiritual involvement indicated increased psychological well-being and decreased depression.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to document the impact of participation in microfinance programs on domestic violence against women. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses the survey data from 69 villages in Bangladesh and the instrumental variable approach to estimate the effect of participation in microcredit programs on domestic violence. Findings The results show that women’s participation in microcredit programs does not reduce domestic violence. However, this result is possible only when the authors do not distinguish between female borrowers who have control over credit and those who do not have control over credit. Classifying female borrowers into these two categories can significantly change the results. The authors report significantly lower physical violence against those female who have control over credit. In case of psychological violence, the authors report no significant impact of control over microcredit. Originality/value The novelty of the paper lies in distinguishing between physical and psychological violence.

Domestic violence is a pervasive social problem in Australia. Digital media are increasingly integral to its dynamics. Technology-facilitated coercive control (TFCC) is a form of gender-based violence. This article examines domestic violence survivors’ experiences with TFCC, drawing on interviews with 20 Australian women. Study results enhance understanding of how abusers use digital media. We highlight four key contexts for understanding the role of technology in domestic violence: the coercive and controlling relationship, separation abuse, co-parenting and survivors’ safety work. These contexts provide insight into the dynamics of TFCC and illuminate key differences between this and other forms of online abuse.

Key messages

Technology is integral to coercive control.

Separation and co-parenting are key sites of technology-facilitated coercive control.

Survivors manage technology-facilitated abuse in the absence of adequate responses and support.
