This study primarily aims at assessing and studying the parenting styles and its effect on the self-esteem of adolescents, specifically in Indian context. ‘Parenting styles’ are of four main types which are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful parenting style. Three main styles out of these namely authoritarian, authoritative and permissive style of parenting have been kept as the focus of this study to assess their effect on the self-esteem of adolescents since both theoretically and practically it has always been documented and proved that the neglectful approach of parents always negatively impact the children and adolescents’ factors related to their ‘self’, therefore it is not kept in the inclusion criteria for this study. The selected sample for this study consisted of a total of 120 participants (60 female and 60 male) adolescents selected from Delhi and NCR in India, the age range kept as 16-18years (with no mental and physical disability, regular school going adolescents, with nearly same socio-economic background and only those from unbroken nuclear families with mothers who were homemakers). The findings showed that there is no significant difference between permissive and authoritative parenting both in case of mothers’ and fathers’ parenting on the self-esteem of adolescents and both these styles of parenting mostly results in higher self-esteem among adolescents as compared to authoritarian style of parenting which is found to have a significant negative correlation with the self-esteem of adolescents. Also, not much difference is found between the self-esteem levels of male and female adolescents in present times in urban Indian context.

Parents and siblings play a major role in influencing the self-esteem of an individual. The parents’ relationship with the child, their responses to the child’s academic performance which includes motivation as well as encouragement plays a huge role in building up a positive self-esteem which further helps them to develop a better personality; better career along with that self-esteem also helps one to solve their problems in life. In this research, data from 112 participants were collected through an online survey focusing on the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem across a specific age range. Parenting styles were assessed using 20 question model(What questions, while self-esteem was evaluated using Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Through this research the effect of native place on one’s self esteem was determined along with the effect of other factors such as relationship with siblings, academic performance on self-esteem was analysed

This study is to find the relationship of perceived parenting skills (modes), with mothering and fathering impact on the self-esteem of adolescent. This study examines the skill of father, mother, and parental (as whole) influence on the self-esteem of adolescents. The study is based on adolescents’ perception of parenting. The study involves a sample of 255 adolescent students selected randomly from two schools in the urban area. The variables in the study were measured by using Parenting Scale (Bharadwaj, Sharma, and Garg, 1998), The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (Morris Rosenberg) and demographic details. Statistical analysis was done using statistical package (SPSS), with t-test, ANOVA and Karl Pearsons Correlation. The results showed that parenting styles had significant effects on adolescents’ self-esteem. It was also found that girls had a higher level of self-esteem than the boys. However no significant difference was found in the self-esteem of adolescents based on birth order and father’s occupation. The implication of the findings is that the type of parental upbringing has significant impacts on the self-esteem of adolescent and therefore, parents and caregivers should ensure the use of best practices in child upbringing.

In modern India, the role of woman can be called as phenomenon. The transition of woman from the previous to present is worth mentioning. Woman who rest considered being the masters in the art of home making but now considered to be forces that shapes a country and culture. Both working and non working women play a very significant role in house hold activities of their families. Their life is more family centered than that of man. Working women are often tossed between home and job. The present study aims to compare the Self-esteem and psychological well-being among working and non- working women. The respondent in the present study were 70, which were further divided in 35 working and 35 non-working women of the age range of 20-55 years. For assessment and measuring self esteem, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (1965) and for psychological well-being, a scale measured and developed by Bhogle and Prakash (1995) were used. For the statistical analysis t- test is applied to check the significance of self esteem and psychological well-being among working and non working women. The result shows, there is a significant difference among working and non working women in self esteem and psychological well-being.

A comparison of stress and self-esteem as made between a group of 23 couples in treatment who had abused their children and 23 control couples who were matched for age, race, sex, education, and occupation. Stress was measured by the Recent Life Changes Questionnaire. Self-esteem was measured by a synthesis of 38 items selected by mental health professionals from the Clarke Parent/Child Relations Questionnaire and the Self-description and Mate Description Form. Analysis of variance showed that couples who had abused their children had significantly greater stress than control couples. However, there was no significant difference between the groups on the measure of self-esteem. There was also no interaction effect of stress with self-esteem on abuse. While it seems well established that stress is a major contributor in child abuse, the interaction of stress with personality factors of parents who abuse their children remains uncertain.

Objectives: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is very common and is one of the most common causes for patients to be admitted to urology, pediatrics, child psychiatry and child surgery departments. We aimed to investigate the effect on depression and self-esteem of this disorder that can cause problems on person's social development and human relations. Material and methods: 90 patients who were admitted to our clinic with complaints of nocturnal enuresis were enrolled. Investigations to rule out organic causes were performed in this group of patients. Out of them 38 children and adolescents (age range 8-18 years) with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) agreed to participate in the study In the same period 46 healthy children and adolescents with a similar age range without bed wetting complaint were included in the study as a control group. The age of the family, educational and socioeconomic level were questioned and Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSCS) and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) forms were filled out. Results: Mean age of the cases (18 females or 47.4% and 20 males or 52.6%) was 10.76 ± 3.82 years whereas mean age of controls (26 females or 56.5% and 20 males or 43.5%) was 10.89 ± 3.11 years. Depression scale was significantly higher (p = 0.001) in the case group than in the control group (10.42 ± 4.31 vs 7.09 ± 4.35). In both groups there was no statistically significant difference by age and sex in terms of depression scale (p > 0.05). Conclusion: NE is widely seen as in the community and is a source of stresses either for children and for their families. When patients were admitted to physicians for treatment, a multidisciplinary approach should be offered and the necessary psychological support should be provided jointly by child psychiatrists and psychologists.

An essential component of youths’ successful development is learning to appropriately respond to emotions, including the ability to recognize, identify and describe one’s feelings. Emotional competence refers to one’s ability to express or release one’s inner feelings or emotions. Self-esteem reflects a person’s overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. General well being refers to the harmonious functioning of the physical as well as psychological aspects of the personality, giving satisfaction to the self and benefit to the society. The present study focuses on the self esteem and general well being in adolescents with low vs high emotional competence. For this purpose, first of all emotional competence scale was administered on 260 adolescents within the age range of 15-18 years, to identify the low emotionally competent and high emotionally competent adolescents. After the sample selection of 152 subjects (76 low emotionally competent and 76 high emotionally competent) Rosenberg’s Self-esteem scale and General well being scale were administered. Results indicate that high emotionally competent adolescents have high self-esteem and better general well being than low emotionally competent adolescents.

The relevance of studying the self- assessment of cadets of the Suvorov Military School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and its relationship with psychological health is due to the need to increase the effectiveness of the system of psychological support for cadets during the period of pre-university education, the purpose of which is to compensate for the deficiencies in the adaptive abilities of adolescents and their further personal and professional self-determination. One of the main criteria for assessing a cadet’s career opportunities in the law enforcement system is his self-assessment. A young man entering the Suvorov Military School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia does not always proportion the level of his physical, intellectual and personal capabilities with those requirements of the educational environment of a military school. The inability of adolescents to adequately assess their strengths and weaknesses complicates the process of professional self-determination, in connection with which a significant percentage of the pupils who entered the school experience difficulties in adaptation, are disappointed in their choice and make a decision to expel. The study resulted in a correlation between the self-esteem of the cadets of the Suvorov Military School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia with the resource of their psychological health, reflecting the ratio of constructive and destructive-deficient central (unconscious) personality functions. Another finding is a significant difference in the self-assessment of cadets assigned to different groups of psychological health. The practical significance of the research findings is determined by the possibility of their effective use in the system of psychological support for pre-university training of cadets of the Suvorov military school, including the period of mass psycho-prophylactic examinations and the provision of targeted psychological assistance to cadets with low self-assessment.

Šiame straipsnyje analizuojamos prognostinės tėvų auklėjimo stiliaus ir paauglių emocinio intelekto galimybės numatyti savivertę ir saviveiksmingumą paauglystėje atskirai vaikinams ir merginoms. Analizei naudoti duomenys iš tęstinio Klaipėdos apskrities mokyklose atliekamo vyresniųjų klasių mokinių tyrimo. Tiriamųjų imtį sudarė 1028 mokiniai, kurių amžius 16–18 metų (M = 16,29; SD = 0,93), iš jų 624 merginos ir 404 vaikinai. Šiame straipsnyje naudojama 2008–2009 m. surinkta informacija apie paauglių savivertę (RSE: Rosenberg Self–Esteem scale, Rosenberg, 1965), tėvų auklėjimo stilių (EMBU: Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran, Arrindell et al., 1994), paauglių emocinį intelektą (ESCQ-45: Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire, Takšić et al., 2009) ir saviveiksmingumą (GSE: Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, Schwarzer and Jerusalem, 1995). Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad merginos turi aukštesnį bendrą emocinį intelektą (ir didesnius visus emocinio intelekto rodiklių įverčius) nei vaikinai; merginų ir vaikinų saviveiksmingumas nesiskiria, tačiau vaikinai pasižymi didesne saviverte nei merginos. Abu tėvai emocinę šilumą, kaip auklėjimo stilių, dažniau naudoja, kai šeimoje auga duktė, o tėvas (bet ne motina) dažniau naudoja atstūmimą, kai šeimoje auga sūnus. Labiausiai su emocinio intelekto rodikliais yra susijusi tėvų emocinė šiluma, tačiau svarbūs ir kiti tėvų auklėjimo stiliai, kurių sąsajos su paauglių emociniu intelektu priklauso ir nuo tėvų, ir nuo vaiko lyties. SummaryPrevious studies have found that parenting styles predict childrens’ emotional intelligence, i.e., their ability to perceive, express and manage their emotions. Parenting styles were also found to predict the self-efficacy and self-esteem of adolescents. Despite a high interest in the effects of parenting on the emotional charateristics and adjustment indicators of adolescents, researchers have rarely analysed the effects of gender on these links. Previous data suggest that adolescent boys have a higher self-esteem as compared with girls, while findings on gender differences in emotional intelligence are mixed. Moreover, some effects of the interaction between parents’ and adolescents’ gender have been found significant when predicting the adjustment of adolescents. The present study explores the way in which parenting styles and adolescents’ emotional intelligence (perception and understanding of emotions, expression and labeling of emotions, and managing and regulating emotions) predict the self-esteem and self-efficacy of adolescent boys and girls. Data for this analysis were taken from a longitudinal study in high schools of the Klaipėda region. The sample consisted of 1028 adolescents (624 girls and 404 boys) aged 16 to 18 (M = 16.29, SD = 0.93). The participants filled in the Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSE, Rosenberg, 1965), parenting styles questionnaire (EMBU: Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran, Arrindell et al., 1994), the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45, Takšić et al, 2009), and the Generalized Self-efficacy Scale (GSE, Schwarzer and Jerusalem, 1995). The results revealed significant gender effects: girls scored higher on all subscales of emotional intelligence (perception and understanding, expression and labeling, and managing and regulating emotions), including the total emotional intelligence score. In line with the previous studies, self-efficacy did not differ by gender, but boys had a higher self-esteem as compared with girls. Both parents showed more emotional warmth to their daughters, while fathers (but not mothers) showed more rejection towards their sons. Of all parenting styles, parental emotional warmth had the strongest links with the emotional intelligence of adolescent girls and boys. The other links between parenting styles and adolescents’ emotional intelligence were gender-dependent in both parents and adolescents. Self-esteem and self-efficacy in adolescents were strongly predicted by their emotional intelligence scores, whereas parenting styles (father’s emotional warmth) were only important in predicting boys’ self-esteem.Key words: parenting styles, emotional intelligence, self-esteem, self-efficacy, adolescence.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between symptoms of mental disorders and self-esteem of adolescents, as also their association with sex, age and family configuration. Participants were 359 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years (M=15.77, SD=1.40), students from public schools. The instruments were the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Descriptive analyzes, Spearman correlation test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were performed. The results indicated a lower average in the symptoms of mental disorder among the boys, but no differences were observed by sex, age or family configuration regarding self-esteem. There was a significant negative correlation between symptoms of mental disorders and self-esteem, confirming the relationships between these variables. Limitations and suggestions for further studies are discussed.

Decision refers to the act of choosing the most appropriate type of action possible according to present possibilities and conditions in order to achieve an aim. Decision making covers all cognitive and behavioral effort for choosing and preferring in the face of various situations and events. Starting from this point of view, in our study, it was aimed to investigate prospective kickboxing students’ self-esteem in decision making and decision making styles.The study included 62 voluntary prospective coaches, who participated in a kickboxing coaching in the city center of Elazığ in 2017. In order to obtain personal information from the participant prospective coaches in the study, a personal information form (age, gender, years of doing sports) was formed. In order to investigate the self-esteem in decision making and decision making styles of prospective kickboxing coaches, the Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire, which was originally developed by Mann et al., (1998) and adapted into Turkish by Deniz (2004), was utilized. The obtained data were evaluated by using SPSS statistics package software and the level of significance was regarded as p<0.05.As a result of the study, according to participants’ variables of age, gender and years of doing sports, the comparison of prospective teachers’ decision making and decision making style mean scores did not constitute a statistically significant difference. The self-esteem levels of coaches in decision making were observed to be significantly high.
