An investigation was conducted to demonstrate the applicability of cylindrical piezocone and flat piezoblade tests for providing reliable estimates of the coefficient of consolidation in clays. Coefficients of consolidation were calculated from piezocone dissipation tests for different degrees of consolidation using theoretical time factors to provide a comparison with laboratory oedometer tests. Three techniques were developed to calculate the coefficient of consolidation from piezoblade dissipation tests. Results from in situ pore pressure dissipation tests were compared with laboratory oedometer tests performed on undisturbed samples oriented in both the vertical and horizontal directions, to provide reference values of cv and ch. Abstract With a recent trend in increased infill well development in the Midland basin and other unconventional plays, it has been shown that depletion has a significant impact on hydraulic fracture propagation. This is largely because production drawdown causes in-situ stress changes, resulting in asymmetric fracture growth toward the depleted regions. In turn, this can have a negative impact on production capacity. For the initial part of this study, an infill child well was drilled and completed adjacent to a parent well that had been producing for two years. Due to drilling difficulties, the child well was steered to a new target zone located 125 feet above the original target. However, relative to the original target, treatment data from the new zone indicated abnormal treatment responses leading to a study to evaluate the source of these variations and subsequent mitigation. The initial study was conducted using a pore pressure estimation derived from drill bit geomechanics data to investigate depletion effects on the infill child well. The pore pressure results were compared to the child well treatment responses and bottom hole pressure measurements in the parent well. Following the initial study, additional hydraulic fracture modeling studies were conducted on a separate pad to investigate depletion around the infill wells, determine optimal well spacing for future wells given the level of depletion, and optimize treatment designs for future wells in similar depletion scenarios. A depletion model workflow was implemented based on integrating hydraulic fracture modeling and reservoir analytics for future infill pad development. The geomechanical properties were calibrated by DFIT results and pressure matching of the parent well treatments for the in-situ virgin conditions. Parent well fracture geometries were used in an RTA for an analytical approach of estimating drainage area of the parent wells. These were then applied to a depletion profile in the hydraulic fracture model for well spacing analysis and treatment design sensitivities. Results of the initial study indicated that stages in the new, higher interval had higher breakdown pressures than the lower interval. Additionally, the child well drilled in the lower interval had normal breakdown pressures in line with the parent well treatments. This suggests that treatment differences in the wells were ultimately due to depletion of the offset parent well. Based on the modeling efforts, optimal infill well spacing was determined based on the on-production time of the parent wells. The optimal treatment designs were also determined under the same conditions to minimize offset frac hits and unnecessary completion costs. This case study presents the use of a multi-disciplinary approach for well spacing and treatment optimization. The integration of a novel method of estimating pore pressure and depletion modeling workflows were used in an inventive way to understand depletion effects on future development.

AbstractThe shear strength of deforming till beneath Storglaciären, Sweden, was continuously measured with a new instrument, a “dragometer”. A cylinder with conical ends, roughened with till from the glacier bed, was dragged through the till, and the force on the cylinder was recorded. Consistent with studies of cone penetration in soils, it was assumed that the till behaves as a Coulomb plastic material. This allows the residual strength of the till to be calculated from the measured force. Results from laboratory experiments confirm the validity of the analytical procedure.The average residual strength of the till was ∼55 kPa. A source of error is the potential generation of pore pressure in excess of hydrostatic ahead of the cylinder, which could significantly weaken the till. Calculations indicate that excess pore pressure did not develop during the experiment, but could develop during similar experiments beneath rapidly sliding glaciers with less permeable basal till layers.

A carbon dioxide (CO2) injection pilot project is underway in Section 205 of the McElroy field, West Texas. High‐resolution crosswell seismic imaging surveys were conducted before and after CO2 flooding to monitor the CO2 flood process and map the flooded zones. The velocity changes observed by these time‐lapse surveys are typically on the order of −6%, with maximum values on the order of −10% in the vicinity of the injection well. These values generally agree with laboratory measurements if the effects of changing pore pressure are included. The observed dramatic compressional ([Formula: see text]) and shear ([Formula: see text]) velocity changes are considerably greater than we had initially predicted using the Gassmann (1951) fluid substitution analysis (Nolen‐Hoeksema et al., 1995) because we had assumed reservoir pressure would not change from survey to survey. However, the post‐CO2 reservoir pore fluid pressure was substantially higher than the original pore pressure. In addition, our original petrophysical data for dry and brine‐saturated reservoir rocks did not cover the range of pressures actually seen in the field. Therefore, we undertook a rock physics study of CO2 flooding in the laboratory, under the simulated McElroy pressures and temperature. Our results show that the combined effects of pore pressure buildup and fluid substitution caused by CO2 flooding make it petrophysically feasible to monitor the CO2 flood process and to map the flooded zones seismically. The measured data show that [Formula: see text] decreases from a minimum 3.0% to as high as 10.9%, while [Formula: see text] decreases from 3.3% to 9.5% as the reservoir rocks are flooded with CO2 under in‐situ conditions. Such [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decreases, even if averaged over all the samples measured, are probably detectable by either crosswell or high‐resolution surface seismic imaging technologies. Our results show [Formula: see text] is sensitive to both the CO2 saturation and the pore pressure increase, but [Formula: see text] is particularly sensitive to the pore pressure increase. As a result, the combined [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] changes caused by the CO2 injection may be used, at least semiquantitatively, to separate CO2‐flooded zones with pore pressure buildup from those regions without pore pressure buildup or to separate CO2 zones from pressured‐up, non‐CO2 zones. Our laboratory results show that the largest [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] changes caused by CO2 injection are associated with high‐porosity, high‐permeability rocks. In other words, CO2 flooding and pore pressure buildup decrease [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] more in high‐porosity, high‐permeability samples. Therefore, it may be possible to delineate such high‐porosity, high‐permeability streaks seismically in situ. If the streaks are thick enough compared to seismic resolution, they can be identified by the larger [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] changes.
