In this paper results of CFD calculations with the MARIN in-house code ReFRESCO are presented for the JBF-14000 Semi-Submersible designed by Huisman Equipment BV. The objective of the CFD calculations is to investigate the applicability, the costs and the accuracy of CFD to obtain the current coefficients of a semi-submersible for all headings. Furthermore, full scale CFD calculations are carried out to investigate possible scale effects on the current coefficients. An extensive verification study has been carried for the model-scale current loads on a semi-submersible using 10 different grids of different grid type for 3 different headings, i.e. 180, 150 and 90 degrees. These headings represent the main different flow regions around the semi-submersible. The CFD results are compared with the results from wind tunnel experiments and tests in the Offshore Basin for a range of current headings. The results for the force coefficients are not very dependent on grid resolution and grid type. The largest differences found are less than 10% and these are obtained for CX results for 180 degrees. For the results obtained on the same grid type the results change less than 4% when the grid is refined. These verification results give good confidence in the CFD results. For the angles with larger forces, i.e. the range [180:130] for CX and the range [150:90] for CY the CFD results are within 12% or better from the experiments. Full-scale force coefficients are calculated using 5 subsequently refined grids for three different headings, i.e. 180, 150 and 90 degrees. Scale effects should only be determined when the effect of grid refining is investigated. The trend of the force coefficients when refining the grid, can be different for model-scale and full-scale. The use of coarse grids can lead to misleading conclusions. On average the full-scale values are approximately 15–20% lower than for model-scale. However, larger differences for a number of angles do exist.

This paper presents the results of full-scale numerical wind tunnel tests of wind pressure on structure roofs with suspension solar panels. Solar roof project is popularized in this century. Solar panels are suspended above the structure roof. So the wind load effect on the structure roof is varied. The wind tunnel experiments are often expensive. A 3D model is introduced and solved using ADINA. The wind pressure distribution coefficients are calculated.

We should like to preface our essay on the subject of spinning by mentioning the circumstances under which our investigations were carried out and the sources of our information. The Panel of the Aeronautical Research Committee which has been appointed to deal with all questions connected with the stability and control of aeroplanes was requested in 1924 to consider the urgent problems connected with the alarming accidents due to certain machines failing to retover from a spin. After the issue of a preliminary report on the situation by the Panel, the writers of this paper were asked to go into the whole question as far as existing information from full-scale and wind tunnel experiments would permit. We have had ready access to all available data, coming chiefly from Farnborough on the full-scale side, and from the N.P.L. on the model side.

Some wind tunnel experiments have been made on a variable pitch airscrew which shall change its pitch automatically as V/nD changes. The change in pitch is operated by the resultant effect of centrifugal and aerodynamic forces.Reduction in air density, e.g., due to increase in height, causes an increase in pitch.In the event of engine failure the blades assume the position of minimum drag.A tentative design for a model screw, together with tests thereon, are described, and it appears that if the friction in the bearings about which the change in pitch occurs can be made reasonably small, it should be possible to construct a satisfactory full-scale screw.

Összefoglalva megállapítható, hogy nagyobb szélsebesség hatására több talajanyag erodálódott, és ezzel együtt megnőtt az áthalmozott tápanyag mennyisége is. Minden vizsgált szélsebesség esetében a szélerózió következtében 3–7%-kal megnőtt az 1 mm és annál nagyobb szemcsék, illetve aggregátumok aránya a kiindulási talajanyag felső 0–1 cm-es rétegében. A finomabb szemcse-, illetve aggregátum-átmérők esetén a fújatást követően csökkenést tapasztaltunk. A leginkább a 315 μm és az annál kisebb szemcsék aránya csökkent, átlagosan 1–2%-kal. A minták kémiai és fizikai elemzéseiből megállapítható, hogy a láda utáni humuszosabb, aggregátumosabb szerkezetű minták N-tartalma nagyobb, mint az alapmintáé. A fogók mintáiban nem tapasztaltunk feldúsulást egy vizsgált elem esetében sem, a fogókban összegyűlt talajanyag kálium- és foszfortartalma is kisebb volt, mint az alapmintáé. Ennek oka, hogy az itt csapdázódott üledékben kisebb a tápanyag-megkötődés helyéül szolgáló leiszapolható rész aránya, mint a kiindulási talajanyagban. A vizsgálatainkból látszik, hogy a szélerózió hatására a lebegtetve, illetve ugráltatva áthalmozott talajszemcsékkel és aggregátumokkal szállított humusz 500–3500 kg/ha nagyságrendben mozoghat a vizsgált csernozjom területen akár egyetlen szélesemény hatására is. A kálium-áthalmozódás mértéke elérheti a 100 kg/ha értéket, a foszforé a 70 kg/ha-t, a nitrogénveszteség mértéke pedig akár 200–300 kg/ha is lehet egy szélesemény alkalmával. E tápanyagmennyiség nagy része több száz méter, de akár kilométeres távolságokra is távozhat a területről. Az általunk végzett szélcsatornás vizsgálatok eredményei becslésnek tekinthetők, hiszen vizsgálatunk során növénymaradvány-mentes, szitált és légszáraz talajanyaggal dolgoztunk. A szitálás eredményeként csupán a 2 mm-es és annál kisebb aggregátumok maradtak meg, ami azonban az intenzív művelés alá vont, porosodott, leromlott szerkezetű talajfelszín körülményeit jól közelíti. Ugyanakkor a természetben zajló széleróziós eseményeknek a szélcsatorna-kísérlet csak leegyszerűsített modellváltozata, hiszen az általunk szimulált szélesemények 15 percig tartottak, s nem tudtunk széllökéseket előállítani, melyek a széleróziós események alakulásában nagy jelentőségűek. Ennek tudatában kell a kapott eredményeket értékelni, mégis érdemes velük foglalkozni. A terepi mérésekkel szemben a szélcsatornában végzett vizsgálatoknak éppen az a legfontosabb előnye, hogy ellenőrzött, kontrollált körülmények között végezzük a méréseket, így rengeteg olyan szempontot meg tudunk vizsgálni, amit terepi mérésekkel lehetetlen lenne. Ilyen szempontok a pontos szélsebesség és szélirány hatása, az erodált felület nagysága és tulajdonságai. Kutatásunk következő lépése a szélcsatornás kísérletekkel vizsgált mintaterületeken terepi, mobil szélcsatornás vizsgálatok végzése, valamint terepi üledékcsapdák elhelyezésével a valós szélesemények által elszállított talaj mennyiségének és minőségének meghatározása. Célunk mind pontosabb képet alkotni a hazai jó minőségű csernozjom talajok szélerózió okozta tápanyagveszteségének mértékéről. A mezőgazdasági művelés alatt álló csernozjom területek feltalajában a tápanyag és szerves anyag szélerózió útján történő mozgási törvényszerűségeinek feltárása több szempontból is hasznos: segítséget jelent a területi tervezésben, a defláció szempontjából optimális területhasználat és művelési módok meghatározásában. Képet kapunk arról, hogy a legnagyobb gazdasági potenciállal rendelkező termőtalajunk milyen veszélyeknek van kitéve, s hogy a nem megfelelő időben, nem megfelelő nedvességviszonyok mellett történő talajművelés következtében kialakuló szerkezetromlás (porosodás) miatti deflációs károk milyen tápanyagveszteséggel járhatnak együtt.
