Abstract To investigate the contact phenomenon between the blade tip and the abradable coated casing, a rig test was designed and built. This rig test fills the following constraints: simplification of the low-pressure compressor environment but realistic mechanical conditions, ability to test several designs in short time, at low cost and repeatability. The rig test gives the opportunity to investigate the behavior of different blade designs regarding the sought phenomenon, to refine and mature the phenomenon comprehension and to get data for the numerical tool validation. The numerical tool considers a 3D finite elements model of low-pressure compressor blades with a surrounding rigid casing combined with a specialized model to take into account the effects of the wear of the abradable coating on the blade dynamics. Numerical results are in good agreement with tests in terms of: critical angular speed, blade dynamics and wear pattern on the abradable coated casing.

Abstract Surge margin is critical for the safety of aeronautical compressors, hence predicting it early in the design process using CFD is mandatory. However, close to surge, steady-state Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are proven inadequate. Unsteady techniques such as Unsteady RANS (URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) can provide more reliable predictions. Nevertheless, the accuracy of such methods are dependent on the method used to handle the rotor/stator interfaces. The most precise method, the sliding mesh, requires simulating the full annulus or a periodic sector, which can be very costly. Other techniques to reduce the domain exist, such as the phase-lagged approach or geometric blade scaling, but introduce restrictive assumptions on the flow at near-stall conditions. The objective of this paper is to investigate the near-stall flow of a low-pressure compressor using unsteady methods of varying fidelity: URANS with the phase lag assumption, URANS on a periodic sector and a high-fidelity LES on a smaller periodic sector achieved using geometric blade scaling. Results are compared to experimental measurements. An overall good agreement is found. Results show that the tip leakage vortex is not the origin of the stall on the studied configuration and a hub corner separation is initiated. LES further validates the (U)RANS flow predictions and brings additional insight on unsteady flow separations.

The article presents a method of parametric diagnostics of the condition of a dual-flow turbojet engine (DFTE). The method is based on the identification (determination) of the condition of the DFTE components (the compressor, combustion chamber, turbine) with application of a mathematical model of the operating process which is presented as an artificial neural network (ANN) model. This model describes the relation between the monitored parameters of the DFTE (the air temperatures (Tlpc*, Thpc*) beyond the low pressure compressor (LPC) and the high pressure compressor (HPC), the pressure beyond the LPC (Plpc), the fuel consumption rate (Gf), the gas temperatures (Thpt*, Tlpt*) beyond the high pressure turbine (HPT) and the low pressure turbine (LPT)) and the parameters of the condition of its components (the efficiencies of the LPC and the HPC (ηlpc*, ηhpc*), the stagnation pressure recovery factor in the combustion chamber (σcc), the efficiencies of the HPT and the LPT (ηhpt*, ηlpt*)). The parameters of the condition of the engine components (ηlpc*, ηhpc*, σcc, ηhpt*, ηlpt*) are the similarity criteria (integral criteria) which enable to identify the condition of the DFTE components to a high degree of reliability. Such analysis enables to detect defects at an early stage, even if the values of the monitored parameters (Тlpc*, Тhpc*, Plpc, Gf, Тhpt*, Тlpt*) are within the permissible limits. We provide the sequence for development of the ANN model and the results of its performance study during the parametric diagnostics of the condition of the DFTE.

Abstract This paper uses Computational Fluid Dynamics to investigate the effect of an engine handling bleed situated on the outer casing downstream of the last rotor stage of a low-pressure compressor and upstream of the outlet guide vane and S-shaped duct. The model, validated against existing experimental data, utilized an unsteady RANS solver incorporating a Reynolds stress closure to examine the unsteady component interactions. The results showed that at bleed rates less than 25% of the mainstream flow the bleed effects were negligible. However, at higher bleed rates performance was significantly degraded. A uniform flow extraction hypothesis was employed to separate the positional bias effects from the bulk flow diffusion. This revealed that the bleed-induced radial flow distortion can significantly affect the OGV loading distribution, which thereby dictates the position and type of stall within the OGV passage. Extraction of the rotor tip leakage via the shroud bleed, combined with the radial flow distortion, contributed to a 28% reduction in duct loss at 10% bleed and up to 50% reduced loss at 25% bleed. The actual amount of flow required to be extracted for an OGV stall to develop, was 30%. That was independent of the bleed location and the type of stall. For bleeds up to 20%, the S-duct displayed a remarkable resilience and consistency of flow variables at duct exit. However, a stalled OGV deteriorated the radial flow uniformity that was presented to the high-pressure compressor.

Vibratory stress characteristics of the low pressure compressor in the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft PW1120 turbojet engine recently have been evaluated during full-scale engine testing at the United States Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Center. A description is presented of the approach used to evaluate the vibratory characteristics of the new three stage low pressure compressor. Results are presented showing the effects of simulated altitude conditions, inlet pressure distortion, and off-schedule variable vane operation. Strain gage data is compared to case-mounted light probe data, and the levels of system damping and mistuning are discussed. Predicted vibratory response is compared to test results showing the new compressor to be free of destructive vibration.

Especially in aircraft applications, the inlet flow is quite often non uniform resulting in severe changes in compressor performance and hence, engine performance. The magnitude of this phenomenon can be amplified in military engines due to the complex shape of intake ducts and the extreme flight conditions. The usual approach to engine performance simulation is based on non-dimensional maps for compressors and turbines and assumes uniform flow characteristics throughout the engine. In the context of the whole engine performance, component-level, complex physical processes, such as compressor inlet flow distortion, can not be captured and analyzed. This work adopts a simulation strategy that allows the performance characteristics of an engine component, resolved from a detailed, high-fidelity analysis, to be transferred to an engine system analysis carried out at a lower level of fidelity. The methodology described in this paper utilizes an object-oriented, zero-dimensional gas turbine modeling and performance simulation system and a high-fidelity, three-dimensional, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), low-pressure compressor model. The CFD model is based on the overall geometry and performance of the low-pressure compressor of a modern, two-spool, low by-pass ratio (LBR) military turbofan engine and is subjected to both clean and distorted inlet flows. The analysis involves the generation of two characteristic maps for the first stage of the LP compressor from CFD simulations that account for a range of operating conditions and power settings with a uniform and a distorted inlet flow. The same simulation strategy could be adopted for other engine components such as the intake or the high-pressure compressor and for different magnitudes and types of distortion (i.e. radial, circumferential). By integrating the CFD-generated maps, into the 0-D engine analysis system, this paper presents a relative comparison between the ‘uniform-inlet’ engine performance (baseline compressor stage map) and the engine performance obtained after using the map accounting for a typical extent of stratified inlet distortion. The analysis carried out by this study, demonstrates relative changes in the simulated engine performance larger than 1%.
