The device made of fan and pin-fin heat sink should be a powerful heat sink for LED lamp. This study used transient liquid crystal experimentation to measure the end-wall heat transfer coefficient of linearly arrayed square pin array in the rectangular channel, and discussed the influence of axial spacing on heat transfer. The air was used as operating fluid, and the square pin size was 8 mm (d) × 8 mm (d) × 64 mm (Hf), arrayed in a 240 mm (L) × 120 mm (W) × 64 mm (H) rectangular channel. The relative lateral spacing (XT=ST/d) was set as 3, and the relative axial spacing (XL=SL/d=1.88~5) and the Reynolds number (Re=11047~17937) were changed. Considering the end-wall area, the average Nusselt number with square pin was 1.46~2.58 times of that without square pin, and the square pin array of XL= 3.75 had the maximum end-wall heat transfer gain.

Abstract Turbulators are a promising avenue to enhance heat transfer in a wide variety of applications. An experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop of a broken V (chevron) turbulator is presented at Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 300,000 to 900,000 in a rectangular channel with an aspect ratio (width/height) of 1.29. The rib height is 3% of the channel hydraulic diameter while the rib spacing to rib height ratio is fixed at 10. Heat transfer measurements are performed on the flat surface between ribs using transient liquid crystal thermography. The experimental results reveal a significant increase of the heat transfer and friction factor of the ribbed surface compared to a smooth channel. Both parameters increase with Reynolds number, with a heat transfer enhancement ratio of up to 2.15 (relative to a smooth channel) and a friction factor ratio of up to 6.32 over the investigated Reynolds number range. Complementary CFD RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations are performed with the κ-ω SST turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent® 17.1, and the numerical estimates are compared against the experimental data. The results reveal that the discrepancy between the experimentally measured area averaged Nusselt number and the numerical estimates increases from approximately 3% to 13% with increasing Reynolds number from 339,000 to 917,000. The numerical estimates indicate turbulators enhance heat transfer by interrupting the boundary layer as well as increasing near surface turbulent kinetic energy and mixing.

Heat transfer under flow boiling is better in a rectangular channel filled with open-cell metal foam than in an empty channel, but the high pressure drop is a drawback of the empty channel method. In this study, various types of metal foam insert configurations were tested to reduce the pressure drop while maintaining high heat transfer. Specifically, we measured the boiling heat transfer and pressure drop of a two-phase vertical upward flow of R245fa inside a channel. To measure the pressure and temperature differences of the metal foam, differential pressure transducers and T-type thermocouples were used at both ends of the test section. While the saturation pressure was kept constant at 5.9 bar, the steam quality at the inlet of the test section was changed from 0.05 to 0.99. The channel height, moreover, was 3 mm, and the mass flux ranged from 133 to 300 kg/m2s. The two-phase flow characteristics were observed through a high-speed visualization experiment. Heat transfer tended to increase with the mean vapor quality, and, as expected, the fully filled metal foam channel offered the highest thermal performance. The streamwise insert pattern model had the lowest heat transfer at a low mass flux. However, at a higher mass flux, the three different insert models presented almost the same heat transfer coefficients. We found that the streamwise pattern model had a very low pressure drop compared to that of the spanwise pattern models. The goodness factors of the flow area and the core volume of the streamwise patterned model were higher than those of the full-filled metal foam channel.

Pronounced non-uniformities in combustor exit flow temperature (hot-streaks), which arise because of discrete injection of fuel and dilution air jets within the combustor and because of end-wall cooling flows, affect both component life and aerodynamics. Because it is very difficult to quantitatively predict the affects of these temperature non-uniformities on the heat transfer rates, designers are forced to budget for hot-streaks in the cooling system design process. Consequently, components are designed for higher working temperatures than the mass-mean gas temperature, and this imposes a significant overall performance penalty. An inadequate cooling budget can lead to reduced component life. An improved understanding of hot-streak migration physics, or robust correlations based on reliable experimental data, would help designers minimise the overhead on cooling flow that is currently a necessity. A number of recent research projects sponsored by a range of industrial gas turbine and aero-engine manufacturers attest to the growing interest in hot-streak physics. This paper presents measurements of surface and end-wall heat transfer rate for an HP nozzle guide vane (NGV) operating as part of a full HP turbine stage in an annular transonic rotating turbine facility. Measurements were conducted with both uniform stage inlet temperature and with two non-uniform temperature profiles. The temperature profiles were non-dimensionally similar to profiles measured in an engine. A difference of one half of an NGV pitch in the circumferential (clocking) position of the hot-streak with respect to the NGV was used to investigate the affect of clocking on the vane surface and end-wall heat transfer rate. The vane surface pressure distributions, and the results of a flow-visualisation study, which are also given, are used to aid interpretation of the results. The results are compared to two-dimensional predictions conducted using two different boundary layer methods. Experiments were conducted in the Isentropic Light Piston Facility (ILPF) at QinetiQ Farnborough, a short duration engine-size turbine facility. Mach number, Reynolds number and gas-to-wall temperature ratios were correctly modelled. It is believed that the heat transfer measurements presented in this paper are the first of their kind.

In the present study, the local heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics are investigated experimentally for the flow boiling of refrigerant HFC134a in a multi-port extruded tube of 1.06mm in hydraulic diameter. The test tube is 865mm in total length made of aluminum. The pressure drop is measured at an interval of 191 mm, and the local heat transfer coefficient is measured in every subsection of 75mm in effective heating length. Experimental ranges are as follows: the mass velocity of G = 100–700 kg/m2s, the inlet temperature of Tin = 5.9–11.4 °C and inlet pressure of about 0.5 MPa. The data of pressure drop are compared with a few previous correlations for small diameter tubes, and the correlations can predict the data relatively good agreement. The data of heat transfer coefficient is compared with the correlations of Yu et al. proposed for relatively large diameter tubes. It is found that there are some differences about two phase multiplier factor of convective heat transfer between the circular channel and rectangular channel.

Experiments have been conducted to investigate the overall thermal performance of a rectangular channel implemented with an elongated pedestal array. The staggered pedestals were elongated in the spanwise direction in order that the jet flow from between the pedestals impinges at the centre of the pedestals in the downstream row. The average heat transfer coefficient of the pedestal and the local heat transfer coefficient distribution of the bottom channel wall were investigated for different geometrical arrangements. The pressure drop across the pedestal bank was measured. The transient liquid crystal method was used to obtain the local heat transfer coefficient distribution on the bottom channel wall and the lumped capacitance method was used to measure the average heat transfer coefficient of the pedestals in the last two rows of the bank. Five pressure taps were arranged on the centerline of each gap between two pedestal rows to measure the pressure drop. The heat transfer coefficients were measured over the Reynolds number range from 10,000 to 30,000. The minimum flow area to the channel cross-section flow area ratio ranged from 0.149 to 0.333. The effects of pedestal geometry and array distribution were investigated in detail showing the relationship between the pedestal array geometry, heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop. Conclusions were drawn on the effects of geometry and flow conditions on overall thermal performance of the respective channels.

Cooling methods are needed for gas turbine blade tips that are exposed to high temperature gas. A common way to cool the blade and its tip is to design serpentine passages with 180-deg turn under the blade tip-cap inside the turbine blade. Improved internal convective cooling is therefore required to increase the blade tip lifetime. This paper presents numerical predictions of turbulent heat transfer through two-pass channels with and without guide ribs (guide vanes) placed in the turn regions using RANS turbulence modeling. The effects of adding guide ribs on the tip-wall heat transfer enhancement and the channel pressure drop have been analyzed. The inlet Reynolds numbers are ranging from 100,000 to 600,000, and the rib cross-section blockage ratio (rib height to channel height, 2e/H) is 0.182. The detailed fluid flow and heat transfer over the tip-wall are presented. The overall performances of three two-pass channels are evaluated and compared. It is found that the tip heat transfer coefficients of the channels with guide ribs are 20%∼50% higher than that of a channel without guide ribs. The presence of guide ribs could lead to an increased (about 15%) or decreased (up to about 12%) pressure drop, depending upon the geometry and placement of guide ribs. It is suggested that the usage of guide ribs is a suitable way to improve the flow structure and augment the blade tip heat transfer, but is not the most effective way to augment tip-wall heat transfer compared to the augmentation by surface modifications imposed on the tip directly.

Experiments have been conducted to study steady heat transfer between two blockages with holes and pressure drop across the blockages, for turbulent flow in a rectangular channel. Average heat transfer coefficient and local heat transfer distribution on one of the channel walls between two blockages, and overall pressure drop across the blockages were obtained, for nine different staggered arrays of holes in the blockages and Reynolds numbers of 10,000 and 30,000. For the hole configurations studied, the blockages enhanced heat transfer by 4.6 to 8.1 times, but significantly increased the pressure drop. Smaller holes in the blockages caused higher heat transfer enhancement, but larger increase of the pressure drop than larger holes. The heat transfer enhancement was lower in the higher Reynolds number cases. Because of the large pressure drop, the heat transfer per unit pumping power was lower with the blockages than without the blockages. The local heat transfer was lower nearer the upstream blockage, the highest near the downstream blockage, and also relatively high in regions of reattachment of the jets leaving the upstream holes. The local heat transfer distribution was strongly dependent on the configuration of the hole array in the blockages. A third upstream blockage lowered both the heat transfer and the pressure drop, and significantly changed the local heat transfer distribution.
