AbstractDirect numerical simulations are used to examine the pressure fluctuations generated by fully developed turbulence in a Mach 2.5 turbulent boundary layer, with an emphasis on the acoustic fluctuations radiated into the free stream. Single- and multi-point statistics of computed surface pressure fluctuations show good agreement with measurements and numerical simulations at similar flow conditions. Consistent with spark shadowgraphs obtained in free flight, the quasi-homogeneous acoustic near field in the free-stream region consists of randomly spaced wavepackets with a finite spatial coherence. The free-stream pressure fluctuations exhibit important differences from the surface pressure fluctuations in amplitude, frequency content and convection speeds. Such information can be applied towards improved modelling of boundary layer receptivity in conventional supersonic facilities and, hence, enable a better utilization of transition data acquired in such wind tunnels. The predicted acoustic characteristics are compared with the limited available measurements. Finally, the numerical database is used to understand the acoustic source mechanisms, with the finding that the supersonically convecting eddies that can directly radiate to the free stream are confined to the buffer zone within the boundary layer.

Following an experimental investigation into suppression of a 2-D turbulent boundary layer separation with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators, the present work investigates the concept numerically. The purpose is to develop and validate a simulation tool that captures the flow physics and carry out a parametric study of the concept at flow regimes beyond the current flow control capability of plasma actuators of conventional strength. First, a plasma actuator model is integrated into the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS CFX to simulate the effects of plasma actuation. This computational tool is validated through comparison of results with the experimental results for pulsed actuation in quiescent air and for the control of a turbulent boundary layer separation at low flow velocities. It is shown that CFX with an integrated plasma model can capture the main experimentally observed effects of DBD actuators on turbulent boundary layer separation. Subsequently, this numerical approach is used, with increased plasma actuator strength, to study the influence of different actuation parameters (e.g., actuation location, direction and frequency) on suppression of turbulent boundary layer separation at higher flow velocities.

Through numerical simulations, this paper examines the nature of instability mechanisms leading to transition in separation bubbles. The results of two direct numerical simulations are presented in which separation of a laminar boundary layer occurs over a flat surface in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient. The primary difference in the flow conditions between the two simulations is the level of freestream turbulence with intensities of 0.1% and 1.45% at separation. In the first part of the paper, transition under a low-disturbance environment is examined, and the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the separated shear layer is compared to the well-established instability characteristics of free shear layers. The study examines the role of the velocity-profile shape on the instability characteristics and the nature of the large-scale vortical structures shed downstream of the bubble. The second part of the paper examines transition in a high-disturbance environment, where the above-mentioned mechanism is bypassed as a result of elevated freestream turbulence. Filtering of the freestream turbulence into the laminar boundary layer results in streamwise streaks which provide conditions under which turbulent spots are produced in the separated shear layer, grow, and then merge to form a turbulent boundary layer. The results allow identification of the structure of the instability mechanism and the characteristic structure of the resultant turbulent spots. Recovery of the reattached turbulent boundary layer is then examined for both cases. The large-scale flow structures associated with transition are noted to remain coherent far downstream of reattachment, delaying recovery of the turbulent boundary layer to an equilibrium state.
