An extensive series of diagnostic measurements was carried out on an urban rail propulsion system of the type that was found to have the greatest community noise impact. At high speed, 3000 to 4000 rpm, the fan dominates all other sources by 10–15 dBA. At low speed, 1000 to 1500 rpm, fan, gears, and drive motors make comparable noise. A series of tests on a laboratory model of the fan/end housing of a Westinghouse 1447 propulsion motor showed that by modifying the geometry of the end housing posts and reducing the diameter of the cooling fan, the tone at the blade passage frequency was virtually eliminated. In addition, the overall noise was reduced by over 10 dBA while the same airflow was maintained through the fan. When these treatments were applied to the motor itself, it was possible to maintain the same airflow as in the unmodified motor by redesigning the grill over the inlet at the commutator end of the motor. Noise reductions, however, were not as significant as in the laboratory model. Although the blade passage tone was virtually eliminated, overall noise reduction was in the 3 to 6 dBA range, depending on the combination of treatments used.

Abstract This work focuses on the feasibility of a 19-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft, to serve the short-haul segment within the 200-600 nautical miles. Its ambition is to answer to research questions, during the evaluation and design of aircraft based on electric propulsion architectures. The potential entry into service of such aircraft is foreseen in 2030. A literature review is performed, to identify similar concepts developed globally. After the requirements' definition, the first level of conceptual design is employed. Following a set of assumptions, a methodology for the sizing of the hybrid-electric aircraft is described, to explore the basis of the design space. Additionally, a methodology for the energy storage positioning is provided, highlighting the multidisciplinary aspects between the sizing of an aircraft, the selected architecture (series/parallel partial hybrid) and the energy storage specifications. The design choices are driven by the aim to reduce CO2 emissions and accommodate boundary layer ingestion engines, with aircraft electrification. The results show that it is not possible to fulfil the initial design requirements (600 nmi) with a fully-electric aircraft configuration, due to the far-fetched battery necessities. It is also highlighted that compliance with airworthiness certifications is favored by switching to hybrid-electric aircraft configurations and relaxing the design requirements (range, payload, battery technology). Finally, the lower degree of hybridization (40%) is observed to have higher energy efficiency (12% lower energy consumption and larger CO2 reduction), compared to the higher degree of hybridization (50%), with respect to the conventional configuration.

One of the most critical regulatory issues related to supersonic flight arises from limitations imposed by community noise acceptability. The most efficient way to ensure that future supersonic aircraft will meet low-noise requirements is the verification of noise emissions from the early stages of the design process. Therefore, this paper suggests guidelines for the Landing and Take-Off (LTO) noise assessment of future civil supersonic aircraft in conceptual design. The supersonic aircraft noise model is based on the semi-empirical equations employed in the early versions of the Aircraft NOise Prediction Program (ANOPP) developed by NASA, whereas sound attenuation due to atmospheric absorption has been considered in accordance with SAE ARP 866 B. The simulation of the trajectory leads to the prediction of the aircraft noise level on ground in terms of several acoustic metrics (LAmax, SEL, PNLTM and EPNL). Therefore, a dedicated validation has been performed, selecting the only available supersonic aircraft of the Aircraft Noise and Performance database (ANP), that is, the Concorde, through the matching with Noise Power Distance (NPD) curves for LAmax and SEL, obtaining a maximum prediction error of ±2.19%. At least, an application to departure and approach procedures is reported to verify the first noise estimations with current noise requirements defined by ICAO at the three certification measurement points (sideline, flyover, approach) and to draw preliminary considerations for future low-noise supersonic aircraft design.
