An approach to developing a general technique for constructing reduced-order models of unsteady flows about three-dimensional complex geometries is presented. The boundary element method along with the potential flow is used to analyze unsteady flows over two-dimensional airfoils, three-dimensional wings, and wing-body configurations. Eigenanalysis of unsteady flows over a NACA 0012 airfoil, a three-dimensional wing with the NACA 0012 section and a wing-body configuration is performed in time domain based on the unsteady boundary element formulation. Reduced-order models are constructed with and without the static correction. The numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present method in reduced-order modeling of unsteady flows over complex configurations.

A novel methodology to detect the presence of a crack and to predict the nonlinear forced response of mistuned turbine engine rotors with a cracked blade and mistuning is developed. The combined effects of the crack and mistuning are modeled. First, a hybrid-interface method based on component mode synthesis is employed to develop reduced-order models (ROMs) of the tuned system with a cracked blade. Constraint modes are added to model the displacements due to the intermittent contact between the crack surfaces. The degrees of freedom (DOFs) on the crack surfaces are retained as active DOFs so that the physical forces due to the contact/interaction (in the three-dimensional space) can be accurately modeled. Next, the presence of mistuning in the tuned system with a cracked blade is modeled. Component mode mistuning is used to account for mistuning present in the uncracked blades while the cracked blade is considered as a reference (with no mistuning). Next, the resulting (reduced-order) nonlinear equations of motion are solved by applying an alternating frequency/time-domain method. Using these efficient ROMs in a forced response analysis, it is found that the new modeling approach provides significant computational cost savings, while ensuring good accuracy relative to full-order finite element analyses. Furthermore, the effects of the cracked blade on the mistuned system are investigated and used to detect statistically the presence of a crack and to identify which blade of a full bladed disk is cracked. In particular, it is shown that cracks can be distinguished from mistuning.

The objective of this research is to propose a new reduced-order modeling method. This approach is based on fluid eigenmodes and body vortices without using static correction. The vortex lattice method (VLM) is used to analyze unsteady flows over two-dimensional airfoil and three-dimensional wing. Eigenanalysis and reduced-order modeling are performed using a conventional method with static correction and an unconventional one without the static correction. Numerical examples are proposed to demonstrate the performance of the present method. The results show that the new method can be considered an alternative way to perform the reduced-order models of unsteady flow.

While model order reduction is a promising approach in dealing with multiscale time-dependent systems that are too large or too expensive to simulate for long times, the resulting reduced order models can suffer from instabilities. We have recently developed a time-dependent renormalization approach to stabilize such reduced models. In the current work, we extend this framework by introducing a parameter that controls the time decay of the memory of such models and optimally select this parameter based on limited fully resolved simulations. First, we demonstrate our framework on the inviscid Burgers equation whose solution develops a finite-time singularity. Our renormalized reduced order models are stable and accurate for long times while using for their calibration only data from a full order simulation before the occurrence of the singularity. Furthermore, we apply this framework to the three-dimensional (3D) Euler equations of incompressible fluid flow, where the problem of finite-time singularity formation is still open and where brute force simulation is only feasible for short times. Our approach allows us to obtain a perturbatively renormalizable model which is stable for long times and includes all the complex effects present in the 3D Euler dynamics. We find that, in each application, the renormalization coefficients display algebraic decay with increasing resolution and that the parameter which controls the time decay of the memory is problem-dependent.

Abstract The prediction of this aeroelastic phenomenon is an urgent need of the designer and requires devoted numerical tools. This work examines the influence of the accuracy of the aerodynamic modelling on whirl flutter analysis, with particular attention to those models that can conveniently be applied to preliminary design and control purposes. Considering a simple pylon/prop-rotor structure, the aeroelastic instability boundaries are identified by 2D quasi-steady and 2D unsteady aerodynamics theories, along with a 3D unsteady, potential flow BEM solver. A methodology for deriving reduced-order models from unsteady aerodynamic solutions is used. The numerical investigation highlights that the accuracy of the aerodynamic solver included in the analysis may be of crucial importance. The use of 2D aerodynamic models does not always guarantee conservative stability predictions, and this is particularly true for three-bladed rotors where a fully 3D unsteady solver coupled with a wake alignment algorithm seems to be necessary.
