The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop, short-haul regional airliner developed and produced in France and Italy by aircraft manufacturer ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional), a joint venture formed by French aerospace company Aérospatiale (now Airbus) and Italian aviation conglomerate Aeritalia (now Leonardo S.p.A.). The number "72" in its name is derived from the aircraft's standard seating configuration in a passenger-carrying configuration, which could seat 72–78 passengers in a single-class arrangement.

In-flight fault accommodation of safety-critical faults requires rapid detection and remediation. Indeed, for a class of safety-critical faults, detection within a millisecond range is imperative to allow accommodation in time to avert undesired engine behavior. We address these issues with an integrated detection and accommodation scheme. This scheme comprises model-based detection, a bank of binary classifiers, and an accommodation module. The latter biases control signals with pre-defined adjustments to regain operability while staying within established safety limits. The adjustments were developed using evolutionary algorithms to identify optimal biases off-line for multiple faults and points within the flight envelope. These biases are interpolated online for the current flight conditions. High-fidelity simulation results are presented showing accommodation applied to a high-pressure compressor fault on a commercial, high-bypass, twin-spool, turbofan engine throughout the flight envelope.

The successful integration of aviation capabilities aboard ships is a complex endeavor that must balance ship design with the flight envelope of the helicopter. This can be particularly important when considering air wakes and other flow around the superstructure as it impacts the flight deck. This flow can generate unsteady structures that may interfere with safe helicopter operations. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is commonly used to characterize the flow field and assess potential impacts to the flight envelope, which can be used to help define an operating envelope for helicopter operations.

Abstract Engine transient control has been challenging due to its stringent requirements from both performance and safety. Many methodologies have been proposed such as conventional schedule-based methods, linear parameter varying, multiobjective optimization and evolutionary computations etc. These approaches have been well-established and led to a series of significant results. However, they are either not providing limit protection or requiring exhaustive computational resources, particularly when generating results into full flight envelope applications. Consequently a compromise between limit protection and computational complexity is necessitated. This note considers a sequential quadratic programming (SQP)-based method for full flight envelope investigations. The proposed method can provide important design guidance and the corresponding claims are validated through detailed analysis and simulations.
