Through-flow capability and flow stability of some steam turbine control valves were studied by experimental investigation and numerical simulation. Based on the analysis of thermodynamic process in control valve, the relationship of flow coefficient, area ratio of valve outlet section to seat diameter section, pressure ratio and total pressure loss coefficient was deduced, and the expression of polytropic exponent was obtained. The relative deviations between formula results and experimental results are within 3%. Both expressions can be used for design and optimization to determine control valve parameters quantitatively. The results of 3D numerical simulation indicate that the topological structure of flow fields in all control valves is similar. The results of valve stability show that the airflow force acted on the valve disc depends on the vortex strength of flow around valve stem bush and valve disc, the asymmetric transonic impinging jet under the valve disc and the diffusing action. The valve operates steadily when the inlet and outlet Mach number are less than 0.15. As the unload degree is about 85%, stem vibrates at the operating conditions when pressure ratio is less than 0.8 and opening ratio is from 10% to 18%. A multihole annular orifice can make flow steady at all operating conditions.

Abstract Hydraulic valves are widely used in many branches and they are still developed and improved. Due to the problem with verification of flow phenomena which appears during valves operation numerical simulations methods are tools which allows to improved valves design. This paper presents numerical simulation of fluid flow inside flow control valve.

The paper presents the design, numerical simulation, and wind tunnel experimental testing of a fuzzy logic-based control system for a new morphing wing actuation system equipped with Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, under the framework of an international project between Canada and Italy. Morphing wing is a prime concern of the aviation industry and, due to the promising results, it can improve fuel optimization. In this idea, a major international morphing wing project has been carried out by our university team from Canada, in collaboration with industrial, research, and university entities from our country, but also from Italy, by using a full-scaled portion of a real aircraft wing equipped with an aileron. The target was to conceive, manufacture, and test an experimental wing model able to be morphed in a controlled manner and to provide in this way an extension of the laminar airflow region over its upper surface, producing a drag reduction with direct impact on the fuel consumption economy. The work presented in the paper aims to describe how the experimental model has been developed, controlled, and tested, to prove the feasibility of the morphing wing technology for the next generation of aircraft.

Ground settlement, especially the ground surface settlement induced by subway tunneling is an important issue. However, there is no an agreed standard for controlling ground surface settlement during the subway construction at present. The control standard of ground surface settlement was studied using the methods of statistical analysis and numerical simulation based on the running tunnel in Beijing subway. According to the research results, a conclusion could be obtained that the ground surface settlement can be controlled within 40 mm using the general construction measures in Beijing subway running tunnel construction, and furthermore, the settlement of 40mm will not damage the existing nearby structures and utilities including neighboring buildings, bridges and pipelines, etc. So the control valve of 40 mm is rational, which can be adopted as the control standard of ground surface settlement induced by running tunnel construction in Beijing subway.

To study the flow and swirl characteristics in the variable swirl intake system of a four-valve diesel engine, a numerical simulation with using the three dimensional CFD software AVL-FIRE, was calculated on the intake flow in three types of inlet of the engine. Two swirl-control valve plans are posed and a better plan was selected through the comparative study. The result shows that with a lager valve lift the flow characteristic of spiral inlet is better than that of tangential inlet, and in the opposite case the results are also opposite. The double inlets make the swirl torque increase. When a swirl-control valve is set in the spiral inlet, the variable swirl effect is better, and it ensures better flow capacity and larger swirl ratio range.
