Compound hydrocyclone is an important separation equipment in oilfield waste water treatment. In order to grasp the equipment separation characteristics, its pressure field and production ability research is becoming more and more important. In the process of pressure or pressure drop deduced, the hydrocyclone’s vortex field is divided into two parts: semi-free vortex area and compulsive vortex area. In the free vortex area, the pressure and the pressure drop are all deduced by the tangential equation, the pressure gradient equation and the relationship equation of tangential velocity in the hydrocyclone body and the velocity of the rotary crib. In the compulsive vortex area, the pressure and the pressure drop are deduced by the velocity equation and the hydrocyclone’s separation equation. As to the respect of the production ability, it is fixed on the relationship of the inlet flow-rate, overflow pipe diameter, the main diameter of the compound hydrocyclone, pressure drop and the inlet liquid density. The research indicates that the pressure or the pressure drop are all connected with compound hydrocyclone’s diameter, rotary crib’s running velocity and diameter of the maximum tangential velocity track face. As the results of the research, the ascertained key operators, pressure and the pressure drop, the hydrocyclone’s production ability can provide designing consult for the hydrocyclone designers.

Vortex methods for simulating natural convection of an ideal gas in unbounded two-dimensional domains are presented. In particular, the redistribution method for diffusion is extended to enable simulation of nonlinear diffusion of an ideal gas in isobaric conditions encountered in unbounded low-Mach number flows. We also address the problem of handling source terms in grid-free vortex methods and propose a fast, accurate, and physically motivated method for solving the associated inverse problems. Examples include generation of baroclinic vorticity in non-reacting buoyancy driven flows, and in addition, generation of internal energy and species in buoyant reacting flows. Accuracy and speed of the proposed algorithms for nonlinear diffusion and vorticity generation are investigated separately. Simulations of natural convection of a “thermal patch” for Grashof number ranging from to 1562.5 to 25000 are presented.

This paper presents the result of design optimization for three-bladed pump inducer using a three-dimensional (3-D) inverse design approach, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and DoE (Design of Experiments) taking suction performance and cavitation instability into consideration. The parameters to control streamwise blade loading distribution and spanwise work (free vortex or non-free vortex) for inducer were chosen as design optimization variables for the inverse design approach. Cavitating and non-cavitating performances for inducers designed using the design variables arranged in the DoE table were analyzed by steady CFD. Objective functions for non-cavitating operating conditions were the head and efficiency of inducers at a design flow (Qd), 80% Qd and 120% Qd. The volume of the inducer cavity region with a void ratio above 50% was selected as the objective function for inducer suction performance. In order to evaluate cavitation instability by steady CFD, the dispersion of the blade surface pressure distribution on each blade was selected as the evaluation parameter. This dispersion of the blade surface pressure distribution was caused by non-uniformity in the cavitation length that was developed on each inducer blade and increased when the cavitation number was reduced. The effective design parameters on suction performance and cavitation instability were confirmed by sensitivity analysis during the design optimization process. Inducers with specific characteristics (stable, unstable) designed using the effective parameters were evaluated through experiments.

Abstract Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) potentially offers significant reductions in fuel burn and pollutant emissions. The Propulsive Fuselage Concept features a fan at the back of the airframe that ingests the 360deg fuselage boundary layer. Consequently, the distortion at the fan face during cruise is close to radial. This paper aims to devise and test a fan design philosophy that is tuned to this inflow distortion. Initially a free-vortex fan design matched to clean inflow is presented. The effects of BLI on the aerodynamics of this fan are investigated. A series of design steps are then presented to develop the baseline fan into a new design matched to fuselage BLI inflow. Both fan designs have been tested within a low speed rig. The impact of the fan design changes on the aerodynamics and the performance with BLI are evaluated using the test results. This paper presents the successful application of a unique experimental facility for the analysis of BLI fuselage fans. It shows that it is possible to design a fan that accepts the radial distortion caused by fuselage BLI with a modified profile of work input. The new fan design was found to increase the work input by 4.9% and to improve the efficiency by 2.75% relative to a fan designed for clean flow. This new fan design has reduced loading near the hub to account for the incoming distortion, increased mid span loading and negative incidence towards the tip for tolerance to circumferential distortion off-design.
