Abstract This paper presents the design and modeling process of a flight control actuator using digital hydraulics and a performance analysis that compares the proposed solution and the Servo Hydraulic Actuator (SHA) on a fighter aircraft model. The proposed solution is named Digital Hydraulic Actuator (DHA) and comprises the use of a multi-chamber cylinder controlled by on/off valves and different pressures sources provided by a centralized hydraulic power unit, as proposed in the Fly-by-Wire (FbW) concept. The analyses were carried out using the Aero-Data Model in a Research Environment (ADMIRE), which was developed for flight performance analysis. The actuators were modeled using the software Matlab/Simulink® and Hopsan. They were applied to control the aircraft elevons in a flight mission close to the aircraft limits, to evaluate the actuator’s behavior and energy efficiency. The results show a reduction in energy dissipation up to 22.3 times when comparing the DHA with the SHA, and despite the overshooting and oscillations presented, the aircraft flight stability was not affected.

This study explains the performance analysis of a propulsion system engine of an LNG tanker using a combined cycle whose components are gas turbine, steam turbine, and heat recovery steam generator. The researches are to determine the total resistance of an LNG tanker with a capacity of 125,000 m3 by using the Maxsurf Resistance 20 software, as well as to design the propulsion system to meet the required power from the resistance by using the Cycle-Tempo 5.0 software. The simulation results indicate a maximum power of the system of about 28,122.23 kW with a fuel consumption of about 1.173 kg/s and a system efficiency of about 48.49% in fully loaded conditions. The ship speed can reach up to 20.67 knots.

This paper is focused on the development and the flight performance analysis of an image-processing technique aimed at detecting flying obstacles in airborne panchromatic images. It was developed within the framework of a research project which aims at realizing a prototypical obstacle detection and identification System, characterized by a hierarchical multisensor configuration. This configuration comprises a radar, that is, the main sensor, and four electro-optical cameras. Cameras are used as auxiliary sensors to the radar, in order to increase intruder aircraft position measurement, in terms of accuracy and data rate. The paper thoroughly describes the selection and customization of the developed image-processing techniques in order to guarantee the best results in terms of detection range, missed detection rate, and false-alarm rate. Performance is evaluated on the basis of a large amount of images gathered during flight tests with an intruder aircraft. The improvement in terms of accuracy and data rate, compared with radar-only tracking, is quantitatively demonstrated.
