The convective diffusion of matter from a stationary object to a moving fluid stream is distinct from pure heat transfer because of the appearance of a finite interfacial velocity at the solid surface. This velocity is related to the rate of mass transfer by a dimensionless groupBin such a way that for −1 <B< 0 the transfer is from the bulk to the surface while for 0 <B< ∞ the transfer is from the surface to the main stream. In this paper, asymptotic solutions to the two-dimensional laminar boundary-layer equations are developed for the caseB[Gt ] 1, and for rather general systems. It is shown that in most instances the asymptotic expressions for the rate of mass transfer become accurate whenB> 3 and that the transition region between the pure heat-transfer analogy (B∼ 0) and theB[Gt ] 1 asymptote may be described by a simple graphical interpolation. These results may easily be extended to three-dimensional surfaces of revolution by the usual co-ordinate transformations of boundary-layer theory.

A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine the circumferential and longitudinal variations of mass transfer from a smooth circular cylinder in a crossflow of air. The effect of the three-dimensional secondary flows near the wall-attached ends of a cylinder is discussed. For a cylinder Reynolds number of 19000, local enhancement of the mass transfer over values in the center of the tunnel are observed up to a distance of 3.5 cylinder diameters from the tunnel wall. In a narrow span extending from the tunnel wall to about 0.066 cylinder diameters above it (about 0.75 of the mainstream boundary layer displacement thickness), increases of 90 to 700 percent over the two-dimensional flow mass transfer are measured on the front portion of the cylinder. Farther from the wall, local increases of up to 38 percent over the two-dimensional values are measured. In this region, increases of mass transfer in the rear portion of the cylinder, downstream of separation, are, in general, larger and cover a greater span than the increases in the front portion of the cylinder.

Receptivity of a laminar boundary layer to the interaction of time-harmonic free-stream disturbances with a three-dimensional roughness element is studied. The three-dimensional nonlinear triple–deck equations are solved numerically to provide the basic steady-state motion. At high Reynolds numbers, the governing equations for the unsteady motion are the unsteady linearized three-dimensional triple-deck equations. These equations can only be solved numerically. In the absence of any roughness element, the free-stream disturbances, to the first order, produce the classical Stokes flow, in the thin Stokes layer near the wall (on the order of our lower deck). However, with the introduction of a small three-dimensional roughness element, the interaction between the hump and the Stokes flow introduces a spectrum of all spatial disturbances inside the boundary layer. For supercritical values of the scaled Strouhal number, S0 > 2, these Tollmien–Schlichting waves are amplified in a wedge-shaped region, 15° to 18° to the basic-flow direction, extending downstream of the hump. The amplification rate approaches a value slightly higher than that of two-dimensional Tollmien–Schlichting waves, as calculated by the linearized analysis, far downstream of the roughness element.
