The foundations of the theory of the finite element method as it applies to linear elasticity are investigated. A particular boundary-value problem in plane stress is considered and the variational principle for the finite element method is shown to be equivalent to it. Mean and uniform convergence of the finite element solution to that of the boundary-value problem is demonstrated with careful consideration given to the stress singularities. A counterexample is presented in which a set of functions, admissible to the variational principle, is shown not to converge.

Abstract A variational principle can be applied to the transient heat conduction equation with heat-flux boundary conditions. The finite-element method is employed to reduce the continuous spatial solution into a finite number of time-dependent unknowns. From previous work, it was demonstrated that the method can readily be applied to solve problems involving either linear or nonlinear boundary conditions, or both. In this paper, with a slight modification of the solution technique, the finite-element method is shown to be applicable to diffusion-convection equations. Consideration is given to a one-dimensional transport problem with dispersion in porous media. Results using the finite-element method are compared with several standard finite-difference numerical solutions. The finite-element method is shown to yield satisfactory solutions. Introduction The problem of finding suitable numerical approximations for equations describing the transport of heat (or mass) by conduction (or diffusion) and convection simultaneously has been of interest for some time. Equations of this type, which will be called diffusion-convection equations, arise in describing many diverse physical processes. Of particular interest to petroleum engineers is the classical equation describing the process by which one miscible fluid displaces another in a one-dimensional porous medium. Many authors have presented numerical solutions to this rather simple presented numerical solutions to this rather simple diffusion-convection problem using standard finite-difference methods, method of characteristics, and variational methods. In this paper another numerical method is employed. A finite-element method in conjunction with a variational principle for transient heat conduction analysis is briefly reviewed. It is appropriate here to mention the recent successful application of the finite-element method to solve transient heat conduction problems involving either linear, nonlinear, or both boundary conditions. The finite-element method was also applied to transient flow in porous media in a recent paper by Javandel and Witherspoon. Prime references for the method are the papers by Gurtin and Wilson and Nickell. With a slight modification of the solution procedure for treating the convective term as a source term in the transient heat conduction equation, the method can readily be used to obtain numerical solutions of the diffusion-convection equation. Consideration is given to a one-dimensional mass transport problem with dispersion in a porous medium. Results using the finite-element method yield satisfactory solutions comparable with those reported in the literature. The paper begins by noting that the practical and efficient numerical analysis of thin walled shells is far from a reality. Groundwork for the investigation starts with an examination of existing sufficiency conditions for convergence of the finite element method of analysis with refinement of mesh size; new and more practical conditions are then given specifically for shells. Working formulae of a suitable first approximation theory for the linear small deflexion behaviour are then given for arbitrary shells in lines of curvature and in geodesic coordinates. A variational principle is introduced which is more general than that for the well known assumed stress hybrid finite element model; its purpose is to provide a means to overcome the excessive rank deficiency which is sometimes encountered in the derive element stiffness matrix. , The formulae are next specialized to general developable shells for they are tne simplest to analyse and frequently occur in technology. Emphasis is given to the derivation of general formulae governing inextensional deformation, membrane action and rigid body movement because these constitute important factors in any adequate numerical analysis. . . , Specific application is made to circular cylindrical shells by first considering the interpolation of the kinematic continuity conditions along an arbitrary geodesic line. Details and numerical examples are provided for the first known fully compatible lines of curvature rectangular finite element which directly recovers arbitrary rigid body movements as well as inextensional deformations and membrane actions. The paper concludes with details and numerical examples of an arbitrarily shaped triangular finite element which employs the above mentioned variational principle m conjunction with linearly varying stress fields. All the rigid body movements are directly recovered as well as inextensional deformations and membrane actions. It is anticipated that this finite element and its derivatives will find widespread application.

Approximations made outside of the variational principle used in the finite-element method are examined for a restricted problem in elasticity. They are shown to be rigorous from the standpoint of a generalized variational principle in which Lagrange multipliers are utilized. The convergence of the Ritz solution to the exact solution is demonstrated. The bound is shown to be a function of the quality of both the displacement functions and other approximate functions in the analysis.
