The present work provides a detailed comparative study of the hypersonic flow past spherically blunted and parabolic nose cones at a Mach number of 5.8, numerically. The main focus of the paper is to determine the geometry and parameters of the nose cones that provide minimum aerodynamic drag and heating. Studies on spherically blunted and parabolic nose cones are performed for different fineness ratios at zero angle of attack. It is observed that for fineness ratio <1.2, blunted cones provide minimum drag, whereas at higher values of fineness ratios >1.2, parabolic nose cones provide superior drag reduction. Detailed comparison of the flow/shock features in the vicinity of the blunted and parabolic nose cones for different fineness ratios is also shown in order to determine its influence on aerodynamic drag. An empirical correlation developed for the total drag coefficient based on regression analysis for a parabolic nose cone reveals that it is mainly a function of the maximum pressure coefficient and fineness ratio. In general, the present study reveals that parabolic nose cones at higher fineness ratios are preferred over spherically blunted ones for achieving higher drag reductions and lower heating in hypervelocity vehicles.

Wind tunnel tests are carried out for the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) high-rise building with a scale of 1:400 in exposure categories D. The distribution law of extreme pressure coefficients under different conditions is studied. Probability distribution fitting is performed on the measured area-averaged extreme pressure coefficients. The general extreme value (GEV) distribution is preferred for probability distribution fitting of extreme pressure coefficients. From the comparison between the area-averaged coefficients and the value from GB50009-2012, it is indicated that the wind load coefficients from GB50009-2012 may be non-conservative for the CAARC building. The area reduction effect on the extreme wind pressure is smaller than that on the mean wind pressure from the code. The recommended formula of the area reduction factor for the extreme pressure coefficient is proposed in this study. It is found that the mean and the coefficient of variation (COV) for the directionality factors are 0.85 and 0.04, respectively, when the orientation of the building is given. If the uniform distribution is given for the building’s orientation, the mean value of the directionality factors is 0.88, which is close to the directionality factor of 0.90 given in the Chinese specifications.

The codend of a trawl net is the rearmost and crucial part of the net for selective fish catch and juvenile escape. To ensure efficient and sustainable midwater trawl fisheries, it is essential to better understand the drag characteristics and fluttering motions of a midwater trawl codend. These are generally affected by catch, cutting ratio, mesh size, and twine diameter. In this study, six nylon codend models with different cutting ratios (no cutting, 6:1, 5:1, 4:1, 7:2, and 3:1) were designed and tested in a professional flume tank under two conditions (empty codends and codends with catch) and five current speeds to obtain the drag force, spatial geometry, and movement trend. As the cutting ratio of empty codends decreased, the drag force decreased, and the drag coefficient increased. The unfolding degree of codend netting and the height of empty codends were found to be directly proportional to the current speed and inversely proportional to the cutting ratio. The positional amplitude of codend with cutting ratio 4:1 was the smallest for catch. The drag force of codends with catch increased as the current speed increased, and first decreased and then increased as the cutting ratio decreased. To ensure the best stability and minimum drag force of the codend, it is recommended to use the 4:1 cutting ratio codend.

This article presents the effect of volute chamfering on the performance of a forward swept centrifugal fan. The numerical analysis is performed to obtain the performance parameters such as static pressure rise coefficient and total pressure coefficient for various flow coefficients. The chamfer ratio for the volute is optimized parametrically by providing a chamfer on either side of the volute. The influence of the chamfer ratio on the three dimensional flow domain was investigated numerically. The simulation is carried out using Re-Normalisation Group (RNG) k-[Formula: see text] turbulence model. The transient simulation of the fan system is done using standard sliding mesh method available in Fluent. It is found from the analysis that, configuration with chamfer ratio of 4.4 is found be the optimum configuration in terms of better performance characteristics. On an average, this optimum configuration provides improvement of about 6.3% in static pressure rise coefficient when compared to the base model. This optimized chamfer configuration also gives a higher total pressure coefficient of about 3% validating the augmentation in static pressure rise coefficient with respect to the base model. Hence, this numerical study establishes the effectiveness of optimally providing volute chamfer on the overall performance improvement of forward bladed centrifugal fan.

AbstractIn order to explore the effective support method for deep broken roadway, based on the in situ stress test results, the analytical and numerical solutions of the stress and the range of plastic failure zone (PFZ) in a circular roadway subjected to non-uniform loads were obtained using analytical and finite difference numerical methods based on the elastoplastic theory, respectively. Their comparison results show that the analytical and numerical methods are correct and reasonable. Furthermore, the high geostress causes the stress and range of PFZ in roadway roof and floor to increase sharply while those in roadway ribs decrease. Moreover, the greater the difference of horizontal geostress in different horizontal directions is, the larger the range of PFZ in roadway roof and floor is. The shape of PFZ in roadway varies with the ratio of horizontal lateral pressure coefficient in x-direction and y-direction. Finally, according to the distribution characteristics of PFZ and range of PFZ under the non-uniformly high geostress, this paper has proposed a combined support scheme, and refined and optimized supporting parameters. The field monitoring results prove that the roadway deformation and fracture have been effectively controlled. The research results of this paper can provide theoretical foundation as well as technical reference for the stability control of deep broken roadway under non-uniformly high geostress.

The unsteady flow characteristics of a supercritical OAT15A airfoil with a shock control bump were numerically studied by a wall-modeled large eddy simulation. The numerical method was first validated by the buffet and nonbuffet cases of the baseline OAT15A airfoil. Both the pressure coefficient and velocity fluctuation coincided well with the experimental data. Then, four different shock control bumps were numerically tested. A bump of height h/c = 0.008 and location xB/c = 0.55 demonstrated a good buffet control effect. The lift-to-drag ratio of the buffet case was increased by 5.9%, and the root mean square of the lift coefficient fluctuation was decreased by 67.6%. Detailed time-averaged flow quantities and instantaneous flow fields were analyzed to demonstrate the flow phenomenon of the shock control bumps. The results demonstrate that an appropriate “λ” shockwave pattern caused by the bump is important for the flow control effect.
