Abstract
A new technique is described to perform whole field flow diagnostics in highly transient environments. A modified Hartmann sensor is used in conjunction with digital imaging to provide time-resolved imagery with inter-frame times as low as 1 μsec. Details of the approach are given and experimental data from an application to two dimensional cavity flows is provided. Applications of the instrument are then discussed including transient analysis, high altitude/low density applications, and comparison with transient CFD analysis.
