This paper describes the development of a sensor for the direct measurement of shear stress on the surface of a cylinder in cross-flow. The development, operation and performance of the device are explained. Some of the applications of the device to the measurement of skin friction under various now conditions are given. In addition, the use of the device in the measurement of the Strouhal Number is shown.
