In this paper the investigation of the axisymmetric flow of a liquid with a boundary perpendicular to the flow is considered. Analytical equations are derived for the radial and axial velocity and pressure components of fluid flow in a pipe of finite length with a movable right boundary, and boundary conditions on the moving boundary are also defined. A numerical solution of the problem on a finite-difference grid by the iterative Newton-Raphson method for various velocities of the boundary motion is obtained.

This research concerns the heat transfer and entropy generation analysis in the MHD axisymmetric flow of Al2O3-Cu/H2O hybrid nanofluid. The magnetic induction effect is considered for large magnetic Reynolds number. The influences of thermal radiations, viscous dissipation and convective temperature conditions over flow are studied. The problem is modeled using boundary layer theory, Maxwell’s equations and Fourier’s conduction law along with defined physical factors. Similarity transformations are utilized for model simplification which is analytically solved with the homotopy analysis method. The h-curves upto 20th order for solutions establishes the stability and convergence of the adopted computational method. Rheological impacts of involved parameters on flow variables and entropy generation number are demonstrated via graphs and tables. An efficient approach to the geometry optimization problem of a non-axisymmetric flow channel is discussed. The method combines geometrical transformation with a computational fluid dynamics solver, a multi-objective genetic algorithm, and a response surface. This approach, through geometrical modifications and simplifications allows transforming a non-axisymmetric problem into the axisymmetric one in some specific devices i.e., a scroll distributor or a volute. It results in a significant decrease in the problem size, as only the flow in a quasi-2D section of the channel is solved. A significantly broader design space is covered in a much shorter time than in the standard method, and the optimization of large flow problems is feasible with desktop-class computers. One computational point is obtained approximately eight times faster than in full geometry computations. The method was applied to a scroll distributor. For the case under analysis, it was possible to increase flow uniformity, eradicate separation zones, and increase the overall efficiency, which was followed by energy savings of 16% for the scroll. The results indicate that this method can be successfully applied for the optimization of similar problems.

Based on a new kind of analytical approach, namely the Optimal Auxiliary Functions Method (OAFM), a new analytical procedure is proposed to solve the problem of the annular axisymmetric stagnation flow and heat transfer on a moving cylinder with finite radius. As a novelty, explicit analytical solutions were obtained for the considered complex problem. First, the Navier–Stokes equations were simplified by means of similarity transformations that depended on different parameters and some combinations of these parameters, and the problem under study was reduced to six nonlinear ordinary differential equations with six unknowns. The OAFM proves to be a powerful tool for finding an accurate analytical solution for nonlinear problems, ensuring a fast convergence after the first iteration, even if the small or large parameters are absent, since the determination of the convergence-control parameters is independent of the magnitude of the coefficients that appear in the nonlinear differential equations. Concerning the main novelties of the proposed approach, it is worth mentioning the presence of some auxiliary functions, the involvement of the convergence-control parameters, the construction of the first iteration and much freedom to select the procedure for determining the optimal values of the convergence-control parameters.

An exact solution of the free convective flow of a viscous incompressible fluid from a heated disk, rotating in a vertical plane, is obtained. The non-axisymmetric fluid motion consists of two parts; the primary von Kármán axisymmetric flow and the secondary buoyancy-induced cross-flow. A highly accurate solution of the energy equation is also derived for its subsequent use in the analysis of the cross-flow.
