The first part of the contributed chapter discuss the overview of electric propulsion technology and its requirement in different space missions. The technical terms specific impulse and thrust are explained with their relation to exhaust velocity. The shortcoming of the Hall thrusters and its erosion problems of the channel walls are also conveyed. The second part of the chapter discuss the various waves and electromagnetic instabilities propagating in a Hall thruster magnetized plasma. The dispersion relation for the azimuthal growing waves is derived analytically with the help of magnetohydrodynamics theory. It is depicted that the growth rate of the instability increases with magnetic field, electron drift velocity and collisional frequency, whereas it is decreases with the initial drift of the ions.

The prominence of nulls in reconnection theory is due to the expected singular current density and the indeterminacy of field lines at a magnetic null. Electron inertia changes the implications of both features. Magnetic field lines are distinguishable only when their distance of closest approach exceeds a distance $\varDelta _d$ . Electron inertia ensures $\varDelta _d\gtrsim c/\omega _{pe}$ . The lines that lie within a magnetic flux tube of radius $\varDelta _d$ at the place where the field strength $B$ is strongest are fundamentally indistinguishable. If the tube, somewhere along its length, encloses a point where $B=0$ vanishes, then distinguishable lines come no closer to the null than $\approx (a^2c/\omega _{pe})^{1/3}$ , where $a$ is a characteristic spatial scale of the magnetic field. The behaviour of the magnetic field lines in the presence of nulls is studied for a dipole embedded in a spatially constant magnetic field. In addition to the implications of distinguishability, a constraint on the current density at a null is obtained, and the time required for thin current sheets to arise is derived.

The Magnetic Field

The model of a single Nuclotron-type cable is presented. The goal of this model is to assess the behaviour of the cable under different loads. Two meshes with different simplifications are applied. In the first case, the superconductor in the cable is modelled as single region. Second mesh considers individual strands of the cable. The significant differences between the distributions of the electric current density obtained with both models are observed. The magnetic field remains roughly similar.

We have developed a method that allows, by a simple set of magnetic measurements, to study the texturing of the grains inside a BSCCO-Ag tape. Because the texture is anisotropic we define the angle ϑ L that identifies the mean grain misalignment angle with respect to the tape surface in longitudinal direction (i.e. rolling direction) and the angle ϑ T in transverse direction. The technique is based on the assumption that, because of the very high anisotropy of the critical current density in BSCCO superconducting compounds, the magnetic moment is essentially generated by the current circulating in the a-b planes of the BSCCO grains. The different magnetisation cycles, measured when the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the tape surface is changed, depend only on the grain orientation inside the tape, which determines the effective magnetic field component normal to the a-b planes of the grains. Here we present the texture evolution of the BSCCO grains inside silver sheated multifilamentary tape starting from the initial steps of the mechanical deformation up to the final heating stage. The results obtained from the magnetic method are compared with those obtained with other methods, i.e. X-ray diffraction and critical current density anisotropy. Also results obtained on samples prepared in different way will be presented.

This paper presents results and discussion from a comprehensive morphological and crystallographic characterization of nickel nanowires synthesized by template-based electrodeposition method. In particular, the influence of magnetic and electric field (current density) conditions during the synthesis of nickel nanowires was studied. The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanowires were studied using Helium ion microscopy (HIM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The HIM provided higher quality data and resolution compared to conventional SEM imaging. The crystallographic properties of the grown nanowires were also studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results clearly indicated that the morphological and crystallographic properties of synthesized nickel nanowires were strongly influenced by the applied magnetic field and current density intensity during the synthesis process.

The main aim of the present work is to highlight the significances of periodic mixed convection flow and heat transfer characteristics along the surface of magnetized cone by exerting magnetic field exact at the surface of the cone. The numerical simulations of coupled non-dimensional equations are computed in terms of velocity field, temperature and magnetic field concentration and then used to examine the periodic components of skin friction, ?w, heat transfer, qw, and current density, jw, for various governing parameters. A nice periodic behavior of heat transfer qw is concluded for each value of mixed convection parameter, ?, but maximum periodicity is sketched at ? = 50. It is also computed that the lower value of magnetic Prandtl number ? = 0.1 gets poor amplitude in current density but highest amplitude is sketched for higher ? = 0.5. The behavior of heat and fluid-flow in the pres?ence of aligned magnetic field is associated with the phase angle and amplitude of oscillation. It is also noted that due to the increase in magnetic force parameter, ?, there are wave like disturbances generate within the fluid layers. These disturbances are basically hydromagnetic waves which becomes more prominent as the strength of magnetic force parameter is increased.
