A way to face the challenge of moving towards a new greener aviation is to exploit disruptive aircraft architectures; one of the most promising concept is the PrandtlPlane, a box-wing aircraft based on the Prandtl's studies on multiplane lifting systems. A box-wing designed accordingly the Prandtl “best wing system” minimizes the induced drag for given lift and span, and thus it has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and noxious emissions. For disruptive aerodynamic concepts, physic-based aerodynamic design is needed from the very early stages of the design process, because of the lack of available statistical data; this paper describes two different in-house developed aerodynamic design tools for the PrandtlPlane conceptual aerodynamic design: AEROSTATE, for the design of the box-wing lifting system in cruise condition, and THeLMA, aiming to define the layout of control surfaces and high lift devices. These two tools have been extensively used to explore the feasible space for the aerodynamic design of the box-wing architecture, aiming to define preliminary correlations between performance and design variables, and guidelines to properly initialize the design process. As a result, relevant correlations have been identified between the rear-front wing loading ratio and the performance in cruise condition, and for the rear-front flap deflections and the aeromechanic characteristics in low speed condition.

The flexibility of biological propulsors such as wings and fins is believed to contribute to the higher performance of flying and swimming animals compared with their engineered peers. Flexibility seems to follow a universal design rule that induces bending patterns at about one-third from the distal tip of the propulsor’s span. However, the aerodynamic mechanisms that shaped this convergent design and the potential improvement in performance are not well understood. Here, we analyse the effect of heterogeneous flexibility on the flight performance (range and descent angle) of passively tumbling wings. Using experiments, numerical simulations, and scaling analysis, we demonstrate that spanwise tip flexibility that follows this empirical rule leads to improved flight performance. Improvement in flight range seems to be related to flutter-induced drag reduction. This mechanism is independent of the wing’s auto-rotation and represents a more general trait of wings with non-uniform tip flexibility.

Flying animals possess flexible wings that deform during flight. The chordwise flexibility alters the wing shape, affecting the effective angle of attack and hence the surrounding aerodynamics. However, the effects of spanwise flexibility on the locomotion are inadequately understood. Here, we present a two-way coupled aeroelastic model of a plunging spanwise flexible wing. The aerodynamics is modelled with a two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible potential flow model, evaluated at each spanwise location of the wing. The two-way coupling is realized by considering the transverse displacement as the effective plunge under the dynamic balance of wing inertia, elastic restoring force and aerodynamic force. The thrust is a result of the competition between the enhancement due to wing deformation and induced drag. The results for a purely plunging spanwise flexible wing agree well with experimental and high-fidelity numerical results from the literature. Our analysis suggests that the wing aspect ratio of the abstracted passerine and goose models corresponds to the optimal aeroelastic response, generating the highest thrust while minimizing the power required to flap the wings. At these optimal aspect ratios, the flapping frequency is near the first spanwise natural frequency of the wing, suggesting that these birds may benefit from the resonance to generate thrust.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengoptimalkan penjadwalan karyawan di CV. Karya Indah Bordir dalam melakukan tugas-tugas tertentu menggunakan metode Hungaria, serta menganalisis sensitivitas solusi optimal jika ada pengurangan waktu karyawan untuk menyelesaikan tugas-tugas. Metode Hongaria diterapkan pada proses bordir yang melibatkan 11 karyawan dan 10 tugas. Hasil penjadwalan yang optimal meminimalkan waktu produksi bordir perusahaan. Hasil penjadwalan optimal yang ditemukan adalah: karyawan 1 mengerjakan tas Mambo, karyawan 2 mengerjakan tas Elli, karyawan 3 mengerjakan tas Lonjong, karyawan 4 mengerjakan tas Tampang bunga, karyawan 6 mengerjakan tas Ransel, karyawan 7 mengerjakan tas Tima, karyawan 8 mengerjakan tas Keong, karyawan 9 mengerjakan tas Alexa, karyawan 10 mengerjakan tas Luna, dan karyawan 11 mengerjakan tas Mikha, dengan total waktu kerja adalah 13,7 jam. Setelah metode Hongaria diterapkan, CV. Karya Indah Bordir mendapat peningkatan pendapatan sebanyak 9,09%. Analisis sensitivitas dilakukan dengan mengurangi waktu karyawan dalam menyulam tas. Hasil analisis sensitivitas adalah beberapa batasan untuk variabel basis dan non basis untuk mempertahankan solusi optimal.   This research has a purpose to optimize the scheduling of employees in CV. Karya Indah Bordir in doing certain tasks using Hungarian method, as well as analyzing the sensitivity of the optimal solution if there is a reduction on the employees time to finish the tasks. The Hungarian method was applied on the embroidery process involving 11 employees and 10 tasks. The optimal scheduling result minimize the time of the embroidery production of the company. The optimal scheduling result found is: employee 1 does the Mambo bag, employee 2 does the Elli bag, employee 3 does the Lonjong bag, employee 4 does the Tampang bunga bag, employee 6 does the Ransel, employee 7 does the Tima bag, employee 8 does the Keong bag, employee 9 does the Alexa bag, employees 10 does the Luna bag, and employee 11 does the Mikha bag, with the total work time is 13,7 hours. After the Hungarian method was applied, CV. Karya Indah Bordir got the increasing revenue as much as 9,09 %. The sensitivity analysis was conducted by reducing the time of the employees take in embroidery the bags. The results of the sensitivity analysis are some boundaries for basis and non basis variables to maintain the optimal solution.
