The paper summarizes the results of a laboratory study of the separate and combined effects of bed proximity and large velocity gradients on the frequency of vortex shedding from pipeline spans immersed in the thick boundary layers of tidal currents. This investigation forms part of a wider project concerned with the assessment of span stability. The measurements show that in the case of both sheared and uniform approach flows, with and without velocity gradients, respectively, the Strouhal number defining the vortex shedding frequency progressively increases as the gap between the pipe base and the bed is reduced below two pipe diameters. The maximum increase in vortex shedding Strouhal number, recorded close to the bed in an approach flow with large velocity gradients, was of the order of 25 percent.

Wall turbulence is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and engineering applications, yet predicting such turbulence is difficult due to its complexity. High-Reynolds-number turbulence arises in most practical flows, and is particularly complicated because of its wide range of scales. Although the attached-eddy hypothesis postulated by Townsend can be used to predict turbulence intensities and serves as a unified theory for the asymptotic behaviours of turbulence, the presence of coherent structures that contribute to the logarithmic behaviours has not been observed in instantaneous flow fields. Here, we demonstrate the logarithmic region of the turbulence intensity by identifying wall-attached structures of the velocity fluctuations ($u_{i}$) through the direct numerical simulation of a moderate-Reynolds-number boundary layer ($Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\approx 1000$). The wall-attached structures are self-similar with respect to their heights ($l_{y}$), and in particular the population density of the streamwise component ($u$) scales inversely with $l_{y}$, reminiscent of the hierarchy of attached eddies. The turbulence intensities contained within the wall-parallel components ($u$ and $w$) exhibit the logarithmic behaviour. The tall attached structures ($l_{y}^{+}>100$) of $u$ are composed of multiple uniform momentum zones (UMZs) with long streamwise extents, whereas those of the cross-stream components ($v$ and $w$) are relatively short with a comparable width, suggesting the presence of tall vortical structures associated with multiple UMZs. The magnitude of the near-wall peak observed in the streamwise turbulent intensity increases with increasing $l_{y}$, reflecting the nested hierarchies of the attached $u$ structures. These findings suggest that the identified structures are prime candidates for Townsend’s attached-eddy hypothesis and that they can serve as cornerstones for understanding the multiscale phenomena of high-Reynolds-number boundary layers.

The effects of Mach number on the skin friction and velocity fluctuations of the turbulent boundary layer are considered through a sonic eddy model. Originally proposed for free shear flows, the model assumes that the eddies responsible for momentum transfer have a rotation Mach number of unity, with the entrainment rate limited by acoustic signaling. Under this assumption, the model predicts that the skin friction coefficient should go as the inverse Mach number in a regime where the Mach number is larger than unity but smaller than the square root of the Reynolds number. The velocity fluctuations normalized by the friction velocity should be the inverse square root of the Mach number in the same regime. Turbulent transport is controlled by acoustic signaling. The density field adjusts itself such that the Reynolds stresses correspond to the momentum transport. In contrast, the conventional van Driest–Morkovin view is that the Mach number effects are due to density variations directly. A new experiment or simulation is proposed to test this model using different gases in an incompressible boundary layer, following the example of Brown and Roshko in the free shear layer.

Abstract As a result of rapid changes in surface conditions when a landfalling hurricane moves from ocean to land, interactions between the hurricane and surface heat and moisture fluxes become essential components of its evolution and dissipation. With a research version of the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model (HWRF), this study examines the effects of the vertical eddy diffusivity in the boundary layer on the evolution of three landfalling hurricanes (Dennis, Katrina, and Rita in 2005). Specifically, the parameterization scheme of eddy diffusivity for momentum Km is adjusted with the modification of the mixed-layer velocity scale in HWRF for both stable and unstable conditions. Results show that the change in the Km parameter leads to improved simulations of hurricane track, intensity, and quantitative precipitation against observations during and after landfall, compared to the simulations with the original Km. Further diagnosis shows that, compared to original Km, the modified Km produces stronger vertical mixing in the hurricane boundary layer over land, which tends to stabilize the hurricane boundary layer. Consequently, the simulated landfalling hurricanes attenuate effectively with the modified Km, while they mostly inherit their characteristics over the ocean and decay inefficiently with the original Km.

Turbulence characteristics of an asymmetric oscillatory boundary layer flow are analysed through two-component laser-Doppler measurements carried out in a large oscillatory flow tunnel and direct numerical simulation (DNS). Five different Reynolds numbers, $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$, in the range 846–2057 have been investigated experimentally, where $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}=\tilde{u} _{0max}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ with $\tilde{u} _{0max}$ the maximum oscillatory velocity in the irrotational region, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$ the Stokes length and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ the fluid kinematic viscosity. DNS has been carried out for the lowest three $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$ equal to 846, 1155 and 1475. Both experimental and numerical results show that the flow statistics increase during accelerating phases of the flow and especially at times of transition to turbulent flow. Once turbulence is fully developed, the near-wall statistics remain almost constant until the late half-cycle, with values close to those reported for steady wall-bounded flows. The higher-order statistics reach large values within a normalized wall distance of approximately $y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}=0.2$ at phases corresponding to the onset of low-speed streak breaking, because of the intermittency of the velocity fluctuations at these times. In particular, the flatness of the streamwise velocity fluctuations reaches values of the order of ten, while the flatness of the wall-normal velocity fluctuations reaches values of several hundreds. Far from the wall, at locations where the vertical gradient of the streamwise velocity is zero, the skewness is approximately zero and the flatness is approximately equal to 3, representative of a normal distribution. At lower elevations the distribution of the fluctuations deviate substantially from a normal distribution, but are found to be well described by other standard theoretical probability distributions.
