The 1970s were an exceptionally fertile policy period with respect to housing and community planning in Canada. Two manifestations are the creation of the unique inner-city neighbourhood of False Creek South in Vancouver, B.C. and Granville Island, an arts and public market precinct that is surrounded by the neighbourhood. This article examines the factors that enabled these innovative planning projects to occur, why replicating them might be challenging, and what new innovations may be emerging

ABSTRACT:This article examines the impact of post-war urban renewal on industry and economic activity in Manchester and Leeds. It demonstrates that local redevelopment plans contained important economic underpinnings which have been largely overlooked in the literature, and particularly highlights expansive plans for industrial reorganization and relocation. The article also shows that, in practice, urban renewal had a destabilizing and destructive impact on established industrial activities and exacerbated the inner-city problems of unemployment and disinvestment which preoccupied policy-makers by the 1970s. The article argues that post-war planning practices need to be integrated into wider histories of deindustrialization in British cities.

AbstractThis article reconstructs a conflict arising in a primary school in an inner-city district of Berlin. A pencil case of a newly enrolled girl with a migration background has been hidden. Is it a mobbing act? The teacher feels affected and reacts aggressively. In a longue monologue she collectively holds to account the children. Through her facial expressions, her gestures, her posture, and the prosody of her voice she communicates her moral point of view and her critique of the children. Emphatically she demands not to exclude but to integrate the girl. The interruption of the lesson indicates the importance of the conflict. To avoid the creation of a scapegoat the situation is taken seriously. Committed to the idea of a parenting instruction the teacher wants to secure recognition and appreciation among the children. The question arises if her strong emotional reaction is the adequate way to avoid the exclusion of the girl.

Abstract: This paper addresses reflections from my research when using letter-writing as an arts-based method for exploring curriculum implications within an alternative educational program in a Montreal inner-city high school. The participants, comprised of the program’s students as well as its administrators and teachers, informed the research by shedding light on their experiences of the teaching and learning that occurs in such setting. By combining the literary and visual arts, the study participants explored the theme of identity through the creation of letters, and visual arts responses. As a result of this work, I employ letter-writing in this paper to address the critical and pedagogic discourses experienced and support for a call to shift educational paradigms.Keywords: Pedagogy; Letters; Narratives; Education; Discourse.Résumé : Cet article porte sur les réflexions issues de mes recherches axées sur la rédaction de lettres comme méthode artistique d’analyse des répercussions des programmes, dans le cadre d’un programme éducatif alternatif au sein d’une école secondaire « anonyme » d’un centre-ville. Ces recherches sont basées sur les différents participants, à savoir étudiants, administrateurs et enseignants, qui ont bien voulu partager leurs expériences d’enseignement et d’apprentissage dans le contexte précité. En regroupant arts littéraires et visuels, les participants à l’étude ont exploré la thématique de l’identité par la rédaction de lettres et de créations en arts visuels. J’utilise donc ici, par le fruit de ces travaux, la rédaction de lettres pour traiter des discours critiques et pédagogiques reçus et promouvoir une évolution des paradigmes éducatifs.Mots-clés : Pédagogie, lettres, récits, éducation, discours.

<p>‘Suburban to Urban’ explores a family-focused high-density residential model as an inner-city alternative to the suburban detached home.  The research responds to two key criteria; first how to meet the needs and desires of families in an inner city high-density environment, second the spatial qualities that encourage a sense of community in a high-density mixed demographic environment to enable the creation of a positive public realm.  Located in Te Aro, Wellington, this thesis identifies through research a criterion of qualities intrinsic to suburban living in New Zealand and defines a methodology that enables the translation of this criterion into the spatial design of a family-focused high-density development in Wellington’s inner city.</p>

Since the early 2000s, the question of access to medicines at affordable prices for Southern populations has appeared as one of the major challenges for the international governance of health. But what is at stake is the creation of market for medicines in the global South, particularly countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa. These markets are new in nature in the sense that they are driven by international organisations where Southern firms, especially from India, occupy an increasingly important position. However, the specificity of these markets and the way they are constituted have been little analysed. In this article, we suggest focusing the attention on the constitution of the market of antimalarial drugs and highlighting the role played by Southern firms in this market. Our study focuses on the public sector market of antimalarial drugs. We provide an institutional and quantitative analysis of the creation of this public market. We then discuss the growing importance of the Southern firms, mainly Indian and Chinese, in this market.
