AbstractThe present study approaches Anna Burns’s novel Milkman (2018) via the lens of Leahy’s Emotional Schema Therapy (EST) (2019) in order to examine the model’s pros and cons for literary analysis. The study focuses on the protagonist’s emotional schemas which are shaped by her beliefs, interpretations and emotional appraisals of her environment. The analysis is carried out on both textual and extra-textual levels. The textual level focuses on character-society relationships and her emotional responses to the demands of her context. The extra-textual level concerns readers and investigates how the protagonist’s emotional appraisals and interpretations influence readers’ emotional schemas, which in the process of reading become either confirmed or restructured. While textual analysis displays the protagonist’s emotional development, the findings of the extra-textual analysis accentuate the therapeutic role that literary texts can play by addressing readers’ emotional schemas.

A structural-semantic view of the discourse between Job and Cloete This article examines an aspect of the interaction between linguistics and literature. It is argued that the structural-semantic theory as developed by A.J. Greimas provides a useful approach in guiding the reader towards a realisation of a coherent whole in literary texts. Possibilities for the application and amplification as well as the usefulness in literature are examined, resulting in the identification of isotopies by means of which cohesion can be attained. In structural semantics an isotopy is the backbone of textual analysis – an isotopy being constituted by sememes, compelled by nuclear and textual semes, within the topos alignment of classemes. The Job-texts written by T.T. Cloete in the “transkripsie” and “perifrase” section of Idiolek are used as sample texts. The article attemps to indicate that structural semantics as theory, and especially its amplification as put forward in this article, is able to provide heuristic guidance in tracing the Job/Cloete discourse.

James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has fascinated readers for more than a century and there are layers of psychological meaning to be found throughout the novel. The novel is the perfect vehicle to discuss the relationship between form language and emotion as Joyce deliberately manipulated the emotional response of the reader through innovations in form and language, departing dramatically from previous literary traditions. This paper attempts to take a fresh look at the novel from a psychological perspective and seeks to examine underlying conditioning processes at work in the narrative – particularly the concept of associative learning. Understanding emotional responses to different stimuli is the bedrock of psychological investigation and 100 years after the date of its publication, Portrait of an Artist presents remarkably fresh insights into the human experience of emotion. Despite its age, Portrait of the Artist contains many contemporary psychological insights.

This chapter argues that Fulke Greville’s long career of royal service, and many of the literary texts that he created, were shaped by two Elizabethan court luminaries: Sir Philip Sidney and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. Through biographical and literary analysis, I trace the political and intellectual influence of both Sidney and Essex on Greville’s career at court, with special attention to how the Sidney/Essex circle’s famed interest in Senecan neostoicism and Tacitean historiography manifest in Greville’s life and works. Though Greville outlived his former patrons by decades, it is his experience with them in the second half of Elizabeth’s reign that moulded his courtly outlook in the seventeenth century.

AbstractThis article analyses genre-specific methods of textual analysis that are considered to be elementary and ‘close’ to the surface level of literary texts. It focuses on two questions: How do these methods explicitly and implicitly make use of the concept of textuality? And what kind of knowledge do they presuppose? A linguistic model of textuality is taken as the frame of this analysis. The article argues for the utilization of linguistic concepts in literary studies, both in theory and practice. At the same time it is assumed that historical and genre-oriented studies of literary texts focussing on the prerequisites of textuality will contribute to a differentiated view of a prototypical concept of textuality.

Previous studies have shown a developmental trend in mixed emotional understanding. As children develop throughout childhood, they begin to recognise simultaneity of positive and negative emotions. However, previous studies have limited ecological validity as they assessed emotion choice using only a single positive and single negative emotion. Therefore, the present study aims to broaden the understanding of mixed emotional development by allowing a wider emotion choice. Mixed emotions were measured using the analogue emotions scale (AES) which allows both intensity of the emotional responses and time to be captured. In the present study, 211 children aged 4–10 were divided into one of three protagonist conditions (self, peer and adult) and read a vignette about the protagonist moving house. Choosing from seven emotions (happy, calm, surprise, sad, worry, fear and anger), they plotted the intensity and duration of each emotion they thought was represented in the vignette. The present study replicated the developmental trend that younger children are more likely than older children to choose a single emotion, and older children are more likely to perceive more simultaneity of emotion than younger children. This trend was demonstrated in the number of emotions chosen, and also the complexity of the AES pattern plotted. Additionally, the present study extended previous research by demonstrating that by broadening the emotion choice, the emotion interaction is more complex than previous studies were able to show.

Purpose. Many writers from various epochs and countries have been admirers and propagandists of the bestiary space. The purpose of the work is to analyze the animalistic images and symbols in the Ukrainian poet Ivan Zlatokudr’s lyrics in the late of 20th and early 21st century.Methods. The elements of the following methods are used in the research: cultural and historical (helps to investigate the functions of poet’s lyrical images in the process of representation of the features of Ukrainian national nature and historical epoch), aesthetic (allows analyzing each text as a phenomenon of literature and art), miphological (for coverage of reproduction of miphological images by poet), hermeneutic (ensures free and open interpretation of texts with the possibility for new explanations), biographic (helps to describe autobiographic markers in the writer's literary works), descriptive (systematization of various elements of the animalistic space in the lyrics of the poet), intertextual (links between writer’s poems and folklore songs and literary general tradition), textual analysis (for coverage of the animalistic motifs and images of Zlatokudr’s collection). The research is based on the general methods of analysis, synthesis, observation, selection and systematization of the material.Results. The author of this article represented the results of literary analysis accomplished over the texts of Ivan Zlatokudr with animalistic motifs and images. The symbols of a horse, dog, cow, ox, sheep, cat, deer, wolf, fox, bear and other animals play an important role in the creation of the artistic image of the world in the writer’s version and show his psychology. The article finds out that Ivan Zlatokudr has delicate understanding of bestiarial space. The effect of a hero’s co-living with the environment depicted by the author, with the animalistic environment in particular, is characteristic of writer’s lyrical collection. Ivan Zlatokudr’s works combine real and fairy plans, have characteristics of legends, tales and mysteries. The poet’s bestiarial dimension deepens understanding of nature and difficult world of human relations and feelings and it has national and similarity sounding. Мета. Бестіарний світ приваблює багатьох письменників різних часів і народів – від давнини й до сьогодення. Метою нашої статті є висвітлення особливостей творення образів-символів звірів у ліричних текстах українського поета з Польщі Івана Златокудра кінця ХХ – початку ХХІ століття.Методи. У статті використано елементи таких методів: культурно-історичного (допомагає виcвітлити функції ліричної образності у процесі відтворення поетом рис українського національного характеру та історичної епохи), естетичного (забезпечує розгляд творів митця як літературно-мистецького феномену), міфологічного (використовується для відстеження репродукування поетом міфологічних образів), герменевтичного (пропонується вільна інтерпретація текстів із можливістю подальших витлумачень), біографічного (простежуються риси автобіографізму в поезіях співця), описового (здійснюється систематизація різноманітних елементів анімалістичного простору в текстах поета), інтертекстуального (звертається увага на зв’язки між віршами митця й українським та світовим фольклором і літературною традицією), текстуального аналізу (застосовується для окреслення анімалістичних мотивів та образів у Златокудровому доробку). Дослідження засноване на загально-науковій методиці аналізу, синтезу, спостереження, добору та систематизації матеріалу.Результати. Автор статті репрезентує результати аналізу текстів Івана Златокудра, присвячених анімалістичним мотивам та образам. Символіка коня, собаки, корови, вола, вівці, кота, оленя, вовка, лисиці, ведмедя та інших тварин виконує важливу роль у розбудові автором художньої картини світу, сприяє розумінню його психології. Для поетичної творчості Івана Златокудра досить характерним є ефект органічного вживання ліричного героя в зображуваний світ, зокрема простір фауни рідного краю. Митець поєднує в текстах реальний і феєричний плани, переплітає дійсність із легендою, казкою, містичними уявленнями. Бестіарний вимір у поета поглиблює й розуміння природної стихії, і складність людських взаємин і почуттів, має як національне, так і загальнолюдське звучання. Висновки. Анімалістична образність у поетичній творчості Івана Златокудра закорінена у світ міфології та фольклору укра-їнського та інших народів, ґрунтується на літературних традиціях. Анімалістичні образи-символи в доробку митця відбивають особливості української ментальності, історико-культурний досвід нашого етносу, віддзеркалюють естетичні цінності нації.Ключові слова: лірика, фольклор, міфологія, зооморфні образи, анімалістична символіка.

Existen varios servicios de la traducción automática que los usuarios del internet pueden elegir entre varios con el fin depoder traducir automáticamente un determinado texto, uno de estos servicios de la traducción automática es elGoogle que es uno de los servicios más popularesque permite traducir los textos a 51 idiomas. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo explorar la naturaleza del proceso de la traducción dada por el servicio de traducción de Google, analizando los problemas más destacados que surjan a la hora de traducir, ya que el traductorque usa el Google es, de ninguna manera, un traductor profesional, y por lo tanto, puede llegar a una traducción totalmente catastrófica. Abstract There are numbers of automatic translation services that internet users can choose to automatically translate a certain text, and Google translate is one of these automatic services that proposes over 51 Languages. The present paper sheds light on the nature of the translation process offered by Google, and analyze the most prominent problems faced when Google translate is used. Direct translation is common with Google Translate and often results in nonsensical literal translations, particularly with long compound sentences. This is due to the fact that Google translation system uses a method based on language pair frequency that does not take into account grammatical rules which, in turn, affects the quality of the translation. The complexity of the text, as well as any context which cannot be interpreted without a true knowledge of the language, makes the likelihood of errors greater. Professional translators take great pains to ensure that this does not happen by using well-established online glossaries, back translation methods, proof readers and reviewers. The present paper discusses the Google translate of advertisements, Al-Qur’an holy texts as well as literary texts out of Arabic into Spanish stressing the pros and cons of Google translate that not only impact professional translators in the language service industry but also take the interest of the language experts.

Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz is one of the most influential poets, prosiest, philosophers, and diplomats, his works spanning two centuries and multiple continents. Born in 1911, in what is now modern-day Lithuania, Miłosz spent most of his professional life in Europe including Poland and France. In 1960, fleeing the power of the communist regime, he found political asylum in California, teaching in the Slavic languages department at the University of California Berkley. The following paper examines Czesław Miłosz’s perspective on the radical West culture of the 1960s and ‘70s in his book Visions from San Francisco Bay. This work brings attention to previously unnoticed English mistranslations. I propose a new translation to reflect Miłosz’s original meaning, which changes the way English readers interpret his American experience as well as his book Visions from San Francisco Bay. Specifically, I consider two sets of Miłosz’s pros and cons which he crafted to describe the essence of his American experience, and one set of pros and cons I crafted from his writing to frame his experience. These juxtaposing pros and cons ultimately led him to the conclusion of the importance of richly interpreting one’s reality, especially in a time of change and uncertainty. By way of comparative literary analysis of Miłosz’s Visions and selected poems, we change the way we traditionally think of the ‘60s and ‘70s, realizing that instead of being a time of explosive interpretive energy, this was a time when Americans fell away from rich interpretation of their metaphysical realities.

During the last two decades, the pros and cons of applying interdisciplinary approaches in teaching have been debated endlessly. Many scholars have pointed to the favorable impact of interdisciplinary teaching on the quality of education; others have expressed reservations. In the context of an undergraduate Western literature classroom in Oman, teachers are challenged to make literary texts comprehensible and appealing to Omani English majors who have no familiarity with the Western literary tradition when they enroll in literature courses. This chapter explores the possibility of applying interdisciplinary teaching approaches in the undergraduate American literature classroom at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). It discusses some innovative teaching methods which help create an effective teaching and learning environment. The study found, among other things, that the application of interdisciplinary methods can contribute to the development of higher order cognitive skills, broaden students' knowledge base, and heighten their sensitivity to global problems.

Abstract Dror Abend-David’s Scorned My Nation in its comparative literary analysis of the German, Yiddish and Hebrew translations of The Merchant of Venice concludes that cultural context and political intentions changed dramatically between the two Hebrew translations in 1921 and 1972, limiting his textual analysis to the closing line of Shylock’s famous speech: ‘it shall go hard’. I examine two key words in that speech in the two translations to detect which biblical texts the translator called on, consciously or unconsciously, and gauge what the literary resources of the Hebrew language can make of Shylock and his complaint and whether the language portraying Shylock and his complaint did actually change over those fifty years.
