Aluminium alloys are promising candidates for energy-and cost-efficient components in automotive and aerospace industries, due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and relatively low cost compared to titanium alloys. As modern cast processing and post-processing, e.g. hot isostatic pressing, result in decreased frequency and size of defects, the weakest link depends on microstructural characteristics, e.g. secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), Si eutectic morphology and α-Al solid solution hardness. Hereby, fatigue investigations of the effect of the microstructure characteristics on the cyclic stress-strain behaviour as well as fatigue mechanisms in the low cycle and high cycle fatigue regime are performed. For this purpose, samples of the aluminium cast alloy EN AC-AlSi7Mg0.3 with different Si eutectic morphology and α-Al solid solution hardness were investigated. To compare the monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves, quasistatic tensile tests and incremental step tests were performed on two microstructure conditions. The results show that the cyclic loading leads to a hardening of the material compared to monotonic loading. Based on damage parameter Woehler curves, it is possible to predict the damage progression and fatigue life for monotonic and cyclic loading in hypo-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys by one power law.

In this article, the 3D integration with Ni/Sn/Ni joints was conducted using transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding (250°C, 0.2 N) with different bonding time. After TLP bonding, plane-type Ni3Sn4 intermetallic compound (IMC) was observed, and when the bonding time is 180 min, complete Ni3Sn4 was found. The diffusion coefficient D was determined to be 32.4 μm2/min. Based on the finite element (FE) simulation, the results demonstrated that the shear stress and equivalent creep strain increased obviously with an increase in the IMC thickness; the results calculated show that the IMC thickness impacts the fatigue life of solder joints significantly, and the fatigue life decreases notably with an increase in the Ni3Sn4 thickness.

Skirt to bottom head attachments of coke drums experience severe thermo-mechanical cyclic stresses, causing failures due to low cycle fatigue. Accordingly, many skirt attachment designs have evolved over a period of time starting with simple conventional weld build up design, improved weld build up design, integral forged attachment design and others. The objective of this paper is to compare thermo-mechanical fatigue life of three different skirt attachment designs using elastic-plastic fatigue assessment methods of ASME Section VIII, Division 2. A transient thermal analysis model is first developed incorporating appropriate boundary conditions. The time-dependent variable heat transfer coefficients at the inner surface of the coke drum, which change with the operation stages and the levels of oil filling and water quenching, are determined based on the field measured thermocouple temperature data on the outer surface of the coke drum. Sequentially coupled elastic-plastic transient thermo-mechanical stress analyses of coke drum skirt attachments are carried out using both Twice Yield and cycle-by-cycle methods. The effective strain ranges and the fatigue life of three different skirt attachment designs are calculated and compared.
