Dividing wall column (DWC) offers higher degree of freedom in comparison with the conventional column. Furthermore, the different sections configurations within the column are highly interacting with several recycle loops. Facing with such complex unit operation, describing its behaviour encourages the focal point on the resolution of ideal modelling approaches. Equation oriented (EO) modelling of DWC has been studied by several researchers involving complex algorithm and methodology. In this work, a new approach for modelling of DWC is presented. The modelling methodology involves variables connectivity based on ports and streams that is admissible to equation-oriented flow sheet. To verify the functionality of the proposed method, the modelled DWC is validated with two case studies depicted from experimental literature data to separate alcohol mixture and fatty acid fractionation. The model development was performed in MOSAIC, a web-based modelling tool and run in gPROMS. The model shows good convergence and has less than 10% error when compared to the abovementioned case studies. To furthermore extend the model capability, relative gain array (RGA) analysis was conducted for the fatty acid fractionation to determine the best control configuration in DWC. Result shows that L-S-V and L-S-B configurations are the best control configurations. Our analysis also shows that reflux flowrate, side flowrate and vapor boilup are best to control distillate product, side product and bottom product respectively.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to focus on the evaluation of heritage buildings' sustainability. BIM modeling was necessary for the design of the sustainability assessment model for Heritage Buildings (SAHB). Using ArchiCAD®, energy simulations were performed for two case studies (Murabba Palace, Saudi Arabia, and Grey Nuns Building, Canada), and the developed model was validated through sensitivity analysis.Design/methodology/approachHeritage buildings (HBs) are unique and must be preserved for future generations. This article focuses on a sustainability assessment model and rating scale for heritage buildings in light of the need for their conservation. Regional variations were considered in the model development to identify critical attributes whose corresponding weights were then determined by fuzzy logic. Data was collected via questionnaires completed by Saudi Arabian and Canadian experts, and Fuzzy TOPSIS was also applied to eliminate the uncertainties present when human opinions are involved.FindingsResults showed that regional variations were sufficiently addressed through the multi-level weight consideration in the proposed model. Comparing the nine identified factors that affect the sustainability of HBs, energy and indoor environmental quality were of equal weight in both case studies.Originality/valueThis study will be helpful for the design of a globally applicable sustainability assessment model for HBs. It will also enable decision-makers to prepare maintenance plans for HBs.

This paper proposes a methodology that utilises model performance as a metric to assess the representativeness of external or pooled data when it is used by banks in regulatory model development and calibration. There is currently no formal methodology to assess representativeness. The paper provides a review of existing regulatory literature on the requirements of assessing representativeness and emphasises that both qualitative and quantitative aspects need to be considered. We present a novel methodology and apply it to two case studies. We compared our methodology with the Multivariate Prediction Accuracy Index. The first case study investigates whether a pooled data source from Global Credit Data (GCD) is representative when considering the enrichment of internal data with pooled data in the development of a regulatory loss given default (LGD) model. The second case study differs from the first by illustrating which other countries in the pooled data set could be representative when enriching internal data during the development of a LGD model. Using these case studies as examples, our proposed methodology provides users with a generalised framework to identify subsets of the external data that are representative of their Country’s or bank’s data, making the results general and universally applicable.


This chapter serves as a review of the emerging research related to academy-business partnerships by examining dissertations, masters theses, and some reports in the past few decades. Given that most research from dissertations is not published in scholarly journals nor books, this review provides insight into the exploration of relevant topics. An attempt has been made to cluster prior work into related groupings so that a portrait of existing research can emerge. The sparse studies included in this review yielded thin clusters of research on model development, fiscal adaptations, and idiosyncratic case studies. The largest grouping of somewhat fragmented research is clustered around examinations of individuals within the partnerships and partnership-making; this latter grouping explores the various actors from the business or academy sides of such partnerships. A summary of a NACRO survey is also included to provide research-based perspectives of actual academy-business partnerships.

In recent decades the EU has witnessed a remarkable rise in the number of specialized regulatory agencies and European regulatory networks (ERNs). It is often assumed that agencies and ERNs are mutually exclusive instruments of indirect governance. As this chapter argues, however, they are often used in combination to better address competence–control tradeoffs. The chapter illustrates this argument with two case studies of regulatory policymaking in the EU. First, in the case of aviation safety, the EU and its member states created a new agency, the European Aviation Safety Agency, to overcome a control deficit which had hampered its ability to rein in existing regulatory networks. Second, in the field of food safety, the EU as collective governor sought to overcome the competence deficit of its intermediary, the European Food Safety Agency, by enlisting a second intermediary: the “Focal Point Network” (an ERN).

The focal point of this paper is focused on assessing the causal relationship between ODA and economic growth in the localities of Vietnam. This research uses panel data of ODA and GDP from 63 provinces of Vietnam by using Granger Causality test. The results showed that ODA has a causal effect on economic growth (GDP) and vice versa, economic growth decides to attract ODA in provinces in Vietnam. This result complements studies on the causal relationship between ODA and economic growth using new empirical evidence through case studies in the provinces of Vietnam.
