Research background: Agriculture plays a vital role in producing food to ensure food security, but it is one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution. One of the main goals of the new CAP is to set higher ambitions for environmental actions, which brings into the front the concept of agricultural eco-efficiency. The notion of eco-efficiency includes the economic and also ecological dimensions of sustainable agriculture. Purpose of the article: The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the eco-efficiency of agricultural production and its dynamics during the years 2013, 2015, and 2017 of NUTS 2 regions within the Visegrad 4  (V4), i. e. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. The part of the main goal is to verify the research hypothesis that all the biggest agriculture producers are eco-efficient. Methods: V4 regional eco-efficiency of the agricultural sector is expressed by the Malmquist productivity index and is estimated using the output-oriented Data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, under the assumption of constant return to scale (CRS). The Malmquist index is decomposed to technical eco-efficiency change (EC) and technological change (TC). Based on the eco-efficiency, technological and pure technical eco-efficiency change, V4 regions are classified into three groups: the most progressive regions, the progressive regions, and the regressive regions. Findings & value added: CZ02: Central Bohemia, CZ04: Northwest, HU33: Dél-Alföld, HU31: Észak-Magyarország, HU32: Észak-Alföld, PL21: Malopolskie, PL41: Wielkopolskie, SK01: Bratislava region, and SK02: Western Slovakia have an eco-effective agricultural sector, the remaining V4 regions have eco-ineffective agricultural sector. The research hypothesis that all the biggest agricultural producers are eco-effective is not confirmed. During the analyzed years, 19 V4 regions improve their agricultural eco-efficiency. The main contributor to eco-efficiency improvement is technological progress, which indicates that producers implement innovations that lead to more eco-efficiency agricultural production.

Purpose This paper examines the effect of intellectual capital on bank productivity in an emerging market in Africa. Design/methodology/approach The Malmquist Productivity Index is employed to estimate productivity growth of 18 banks in Ghana from 2003 to 2011 while the Value Added Intellectual Coefficient is used to measure bank intellectual capital performance. The panel-corrected standard errors estimation technique is used to estimate a panel regression model with Malmquist Productivity Index as the dependent variable. Bank market concentration and bank size are controlled for in the regression analysis. Findings We find productivity growth to be largely driven by efficiency changes compared to technological changes. The results from the regression analysis indicate that Value Added Intellectual Coefficient has a positive effect on the productivity of banks in Ghana. We also find human capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency as the components of Value Added Intellectual Coefficient that drive productivity growth in the banking industry. Bank size and industry concentration are also identified as significant drivers of productivity in the market. Practical implications The study’s findings support investments in intellectual capital as a means of improving the performance of banks in emerging markets Originality/value To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to empirically examine the relationship between intellectual capital and productivity in an emerging banking market in Africa.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the current state and dynamics of technical, energy capacities, labor resources and wages in Ukrainian agricultural enterprises, the impact of these indicators on efficiency of agricultural production, indicators of development and competitiveness of products on the domestic and foreign markets. The moral and physical deterioration of the equipment available at the farms is determined, which does not contribute to the increase of labor productivity and to obtaining consistently high economic results. On the basis of the dynamics of the analyzed statistical data, the problem of providing agricultural producers with labor resources was confirmed against the background of deepening of depopulation processes in the countryside, which led to the deterioration of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of human resources. Indicators of development and production rates of the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine have been investigated, that showed a low level of innovation implementation. Mathematical formalization of the relationship between the dynamics of changes in the gross value added indicators and the volume of sales of agricultural products is carried out. Based on the analysis of innovative activity indicators in the agricultural sector of Ukraine and the consistent assessment of the adequacy of linear and nonlinear pair equations, the model specification is presented, which is presented in the form of linear pair regression, which confirms the existence of a direct link between changes in the volume of sales in the agrarian sector.

Moldova possesses the largest area of farmland as a share of its total land surface, an advantage which should encourage economic development strategies oriented towards the agriculture sector. Government subsidies and agriculture loans have been used as tools for developing the Moldavian agriculture. However, considering the challenges generated by both climate change (the drought from year 2012 that affected 80% of farmland) and a difficult political situation (restrictions imposed by the Russian Federation on the Republic of Moldova’s agri-food imports and exports between 2013 and 2014), the country’s agricultural system ranks very low when it comes to agricultural production efficiency. The present paper analyses the performances of the agricultural sector and its impact on the Moldavian economy over a nine-year period (between 2008 and 2016), by using a custom-developed analytical framework based on a dataset containing 21 relevant indicators. The analytical framework generates various perspectives that can be used to elaborate an economic sustainable development strategy of the Moldavian agriculture sector. The development of the analytical framework is based on the dynamics of agriculture subsidies, agricultural loans, the agricultural sector’s gross domestic product (GDP) and gross value added (GVA), as well as the dynamics of agricultural production and production value, also considering the main crops belonging to the Moldavian agriculture sector. The results are presented as sets of mathematical regression models that quantify the relationships found between the relevant agricultural parameters and their impact on the economics of the agricultural sector. It has been identified that the agriculture sector has a considerable impact on the Moldavian economy, a fact revealed by the significant model between the agriculture GVA and total GVA and GDP. A significant, negative correlation model was identified between agriculture subsidies and agriculture loans, although a small percentage of Moldavian agriculture farms were subsidized. Strong correlation models were also identified between wheat and maize production and total agriculture production, emphasizing the importance of these two crops for the Moldavian agricultural economy. Grape and maize production values also generated a correlation model, emphasizing the market interconnection between these crops It can be concluded that the increase in value of governmental agriculture subsidies, as well as expanding their addressability in order to maximize the access possibility for a higher number of agriculture farms, are essential for the Moldavian agriculture sector’s future development, since considering the limiting value of and accessibility to subsidies, a direct correlation model was identified between governmental agriculture subsidies and agriculture GVA.

The food and beverage industry plays a significant role in the economic development of developing and emerging countries in Asia through an immense contribution to the national income, employment, value-added inducement, and foreign exchange earnings. Among the developing countries in Asia, Thailand and Vietnam have recently experienced a significant growth in the industry due to their many advantages. However, the nascent stage of this industry was found to be lacking sustainable competitiveness in both countries. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate and forecast the performance efficiency of the food and beverage industry in Thailand and Vietnam to understand how efficient the food and beverage industry to these countries is and formulate suggestions to improve their productivity in accordance with the research findings. To achieve the research objectives, the resampling method in the data envelopment analysis is applied to measure and forecast the efficiency of 20 Vietnamese companies and 20 Thailand firms over the period of 2016 to 2023. The Malmquist productivity index is deployed to calculate the efficiency change over observed periods. The results reveal that Vietnam is found to have a higher efficiency than Thailand due to the outstanding performance of one company but have performed quite poorly due to low scores in technical and productivity change. The findings of this research can give useful information and practical suggestions to improve performance for inefficient companies as well as enhance competitiveness of the efficient companies trying to operate and reach global markets.

An increase the efficiency of agricultural production is the most important economic issue at the present stage. However, according to the authors’ opinion, the sharpness of the problem for a long time is underestimated and continues to be underestimated in the agrarian policy of the country. The consequences of such attitude to the problems of agricultural development particularly had a negative impact on the results of the agricultural producers in 1991-1998 years, when investment in agriculture was sharply reduced, the production potential of the sector has been undermined. The agricultural production fell by 50%, compared to the pre-reform period, 88% of agricultural organizations were unprofitable. During 1999 - 2013 years, the government of the country, scientists carried out considerable work to ensure the effective development of agriculture. But, nevertheless, in 2013, the level of agricultural production was by 10.3% lower, than in the pre-reform 1990 year, the financials continue to worsen. According to the authors, so that to ensure the conditions for agricultural producers for effective functioning, expanded reproduction, it requires substantially to increase the level of state support to agriculture, to improve the economic mechanism of management, to develop management forms manifolds, under which we mean a rational, mutually reinforcing combination of different forms of management, based on different forms of ownership, ensuring the efficient use of available natural, labour, material and financial resources. In the paper the author’s definition of management forms is given. The development of forms of management and ownership in the agricultural sector should be seen as a continuous process. The composition and structure of the management forms in the agrarian sector will be updated with the development of market relations, economic conditions change.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) and input redundancies in different regions of China, and to bring out the policy implications for improving efficiency in agricultural production as well as environment protection. Design/methodology/approach Based on the provincial panel data during 1995-2014, the agricultural productivity of China and its regional disparity are analyzed. First, the agricultural TFP and its decomposition are dynamically evaluated by means of data envelopment analysis-Malmquist productivity index. Second, the agricultural radial production efficiency in year 2014 and the input redundancy changes from 1995 to 2014 are measured based on the BCC-slacks-based measure model. Findings The results showed that the overall agricultural TFP of China grew 4.3 percent annually during 1995-2014, mainly as a result of technical progress. However, the declines of technical efficiency and scale efficiency slowed down the agricultural TFP growth. The TFP growth in the Western region and Central region far exceeded the Eastern region in last few years. In 2014, most effective decision-making units were in the Western region. The input redundancies in the agricultural production increased substantially after 2006, especially for the pesticide use amount, reservoir capacity and agricultural machinery power. Originality/value Combining the dynamic and static analyses, the paper fulfilled the study of China’s agricultural productivity and the input redundancies in recent years, and also presented the regional disparities.

Starting in the 1970's, the Brazilian agricultural sector has experienced an important process of modernization, whose principal effects include advances in technological progress and gains in productivity. The primary objective of this paper is to analyze technological progress and total productivity growth in the Brazilian agricultural sector during the period from 1970 to 1996. The methodology used here is based on the Malmquist productivity index and techniques in mathematical programming called Data Envelopment Analysis. The results show that significant progress was made in this sector of the economy but concentrated in only some regions of the country.

The features of the organization of production units agroclusters, which are one of the components of land management projects which aimed at organizing the rational and efficient use of available land resources are described in this article. The term “cluster” is a French word that means “bundle”, “collection” in Uzbek. It can be taken as “the geographical proximity of enterprises and institutions cooperating with each other in a particular field”. The development of value-added production in the agricultural sector and the development of this market requires ensuring product quality standards, full use of scientific and scientific achievements in the processing process, development of existing research institutes and using the potential of geographical location. In our view, the solution of this problem can be found in the agricultural production system through the organization of cluster production, which is used by developed countries in America, Europe and Asia.


Problem/Purpose – The paper examined total factor productivity changes namely Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) for the Malaysian Real Estate Investment Trust (M-REITs) by drawing attention to the Islamic and conventional REITs Design/methodology/approach – Data was attained from annual reports for the period of 2007 to 2015. The non-parametric approach of MPI-DEA examined the productivity, technological and efficiency change indices. Findings – The result suggested both Islamic and conventional REITs have exhibited productivity regress of 18.09% and 11.51% respectively during the period of study. These productivity regress could mainly due to the regress in technological rather than efficiency change. One possible reason for this technological regress is likely due to REIT requirement in which the REIT managers could not retain their earning and reinvest their income for the following year. The REIT managers need to have access to external capital for purchasing new asset, which could lead to a higher cost of capital than the retained earnings. On the other hand, both conventional and Islamic REITs exhibited an increase of 28.33% and 61.54% respectively for efficiency change, mainly due to an increase in managerial rather than scale, implying that both REITs have been managerially efficient in managing the operating costs but operating at the non-optimum scale of operations. Research limitations/implications –This study provide empirical evidence on the source of productivity regress for M-REITs and insights on the comparative analysis of Islamic and conventional REITs. Future research suggested to be undertaken include the identification of key determinants for the productivity changes of M-REITs using the parametric approach. Originality/value – This paper is the first analysis on the productivity changes of Islamic REITs vis-à-vis conventional REITs. By examining these values, the identification of main sources of Malaysian Islamic REITs productivity regress assist M-REIT managers to develop strategies in improving their REIT productivity and provide competitive edge in the market.

This study uses the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) slack-based model (SBM) and Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to evaluate energy efficiency based on CO2 emissions in 42 countries belonging to 6 continents. First, the data envelopment analysis was employed to calculate the efficiency scores for the countries individually and continent basis and then Malmquist index was used to examine the improvement. The study period chosen was 2011-2020. The results of this study showed that on the basis of continents there has been fluctuations in energy efficiency except for Australia, with an efficiency score of equal to one throughout the study period. Additionally, from the results of Malmquist Productivity Index it was found that the 42 countries showed no significant energy enhancement during the period of 2011-2020.
