The article presents the possibilities of using a computer simulation to analyze a selected production process. The research was carried out based on data from the plant producing shaft packages from ready glass molds. The simulation takes into account the availability of machines and the average repair time for individual machines. An exemplary model was presented and various organizational and logistic solutions were analyzed. The conducted simulations allowed for direct identification of areas of increased efficiency. The solution to the highest process efficiency was indicated.

AbstractThai jewelry is the world’s leading jewelry which has gained high reputation and recognition from customers worldwide. In the past decade, jewelry have become one of the top ten export product of Thailand with the current export value of around 58,000 million baht per year which is 3.4 percent of all Thailand export products. Due to the high competition in the world market, however, Thai jewelry manufacturers needs to continue to improve their product quality as well as process efficiency in order to gain more market share. Currently, computer-aided tools have become more powerful tool in jewelry production management. They have been used to design production process, plant and workstation layout, production planning, worker’s scheduling, and other decisive decision making in both high management and shop floor levels. This research demonstrates a case study of plant simulation application for jewelry production process improvement. The objective is to reduce bottlenecks and increase productivity in wax pattern and casting processes using line balancing. Various scenarios have been proposed in order to support different level of desired output rate due to the increase of demand. The results of line balancing and simulation models reduce bottlenecks. Hence, productivity is increased. The desired throughput rates are achieved with the minimum number of workers and machine in the system.

Furfural is only derived from lignocellulosic biomass and is an important chemical used in the plastics, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The existing industrial furfural production process, involving reaction and purification steps, suffers from a low yield and intensive energy use. Hence, major improvements are needed to sustainably upgrade the furfural production process. In this study, the conventional furfural process based on a continuous stirred tank reactor and distillation columns was designed and optimized from an actual aqueous xylose solution via a biomass pretreatment step. Subsequently, a reactive distillation (RD) and extraction/distillation (ED) configuration was proposed for the reaction and purification steps, respectively, to improve the process efficiency. RD can remove furfural instantly from the reactive liquid phase and can separate heavy components from the raw furfural stream, while the ED configuration with toluene and butyl chloride used as extracting solvents can effectively separate furfural from a dilute aqueous stream. The results showed that the hybrid RD-ED process using a butyl chloride solvent saves up to 51.8% and 57.4% of the total investment costs and total annual costs, respectively, compared to the conventional process. Furthermore, environmental impacts were evaluated and compared for all structural alternatives.

In the manufacturing industry, managers and engineers are trying to sustain their competitiveness by achieving high output and productivity. There are some common problems such as waiting times, failures, reworks in production line that impose extra cost to the companies. Therefore, companies are striving to find methods in order to determine and deal with problems using different methods such as mathematical, statistical and computer simulation. The goal of this paper is to increase the total output production and to improve productivity using computer simulation and Taguchi method. This paper introduces a color manufacturing line as a case study which is simulated using arena 13.9 software. Following that the Taguchi method is applied to assess the effect of controllable and uncontrollable factors on the total output production. According to the result of JMP 10 software to conduct Taguchi experiment, the maximum desirability of productivity will be achieved when the value of factors such service rate of delpak machine=UNIF (30, 40), number of labor=14, inspection time=120 and number of Permil=5. Taguchi Method plays an efficient and suitable role in the process improvement, proposing adjustments that will provide an improvement in the productivity.
