This article investigates the relation between Socialist realism and Polish ‘matter painting’. By taking a closer look at the use of red hue developed by Aleksander Kobzdej for his informel compositions, it attempts to uncover psychological challenges Polish post-war artist had to face trying to emancipate from the Socialist tradition. A major work that only distantly approaches the topic of psychological stigma came to light along with the exhibition Nowoczesni a Socrealizm, which took place at the Starmach Gallery in Krakow in 2000. A more developed argument in this matter can be found in Tomasz Gryglewicz’s paper ‘Co zawdzięcza sztuka polska PRL-owi?’ in which he pointed out that the success of Polish ‘matter painting’ was based on the fact that Polish artists managed to preserve the pre-war ideas of Polish structuralism and colourism from the trauma of war and Stalinism. This alleged success became the input of Polish ‘matter painting’ in the development of European post-war art. This article offers an alternative argument to the one presented by Gryglewicz as it points to the fact that the unique character of the Polish art of the 1960s comes not from the ability to rebuild the pre-war avant-garde tradition, but rather from the ability to challenge the distress caused by the Stalinist past.

Aim. The study reveals the new facts about intervention of the ideology of socialist society into the creative process of Ukrainian sculptors during the post-war era. During this period, the style, later became known in the art history as the socialist realism, came to dominate in the main areas of art—sculpture, fine art, and graphics. One the objectives of the research was illustrating the forcible intervention of ideology in the creativity of Ukrainian artists of the period. Methodology of the study employs historical-logical, comparative methods, and interviewing. The sources in the previously classified archives allowed to discover little-known facts and to analyze the modes of behavior of the artists in non-free society. Scientific novelty of the research is providing a better understanding of the processes taking place in the circle of Ukrainian plastic artists during the 1940s to the 1960s. The article presents the real picture of artistic and social aspects of life of the sculptors in the Ukrainian SSR. Conclusions. The style labeled as socialist realism, which the sculptors ought to follow, was in fact almost photographic naturalism with the tendency for literary descriptiveness and theatricality. The teachers at the departments of sculpture expected students to create large-scale works, thus directing the young generation towards monumental sculpture. Such large, sometimes enormously large works later on would be commissioned for big and small cities. Ideological control played the main role in creating sculptural images. There were many multi-figured sculptural compositions produced, however, their number still did not match the number of multi-figured paintings. The party line prevailed over the artistic quality. The main and only figure for sculptors to depict was a Soviet hero. And since such hero was also depicted in the other fields and genres of art (fine art, literature, music, cinema and theatre), it could be safely said that Ukrainian sculpture of the period pursued the Soviet ideological path. The myth about the leading role of the party policy, forcibly introduced by the party ideologists, did not leave sculptors space and opportunities to create some other images. Socialist realism was considered to be the one and only style, supported by the society.

The article examines the conceptual foundations and scientific, sociocultural and philosophical prerequisites of imagology, the field of interdisciplinary research in humanitaristics, the subject of which is the image of the “Other” (foreign country, people, culture, etc.). It is shown that the imagology appeared as a response to the crisis of comparatives of the mid-20th century, with a special role in the formation of its methodology played by the German comparatist scientist H. Dyserinck and his Aachen School. The article analyzes the influence on the formation of the imagology of post-structuralist and constructivist ideological-thematic complex (auto-reference of language, discursive history, construction of social reality, etc.), linguistic and cultural turn in the West in the 1960s. Shown is that, extrapolated to national issues, this set of ideas and approaches has led to a transition from the essentialist concept of the nation to the concept of a nation as an “imaginary community” or an intellectual construct. A fundamental difference in approaches to the study of an image of the “Other” in traditional comparativism and imagology, which arises from a different understanding of the nation, has been distinguished. It is concluded that the imagology studies the image of the “Other” primarily in its manipulative, socio-ideological function, i.e., as an important tool for the formation and transformation of national and cultural identity. The article identifies ideological, socio-political factors that prepared the birth of the imagology and ensured its development in western Humanities (fear of possible recurrences of extreme nationalism and fascism in post-war Europe, the EU project, which set the task of forming a pan-European identity). It is concluded that the imagology, on the one hand, has actualized an important field of scientific research — the study of the image of the “Other”, but, on the other hand, in the broader cultural and historical perspective, marked a departure not only from the traditions of comparativism and historical poetics, but also from the humanist tradition of the European culture, becoming part of a manipulative dominant strategy in the West. To the culture of “incorporation” into a “foreign word” in order to understand it, preserve it and to ensure a genuine dialogue of cultures, the imagology has contrasted the social engineering and the technology of active “designing” a new identity.

For much of the 1950s and 1960s, the German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was an absolutely seminal figure within the European avant-garde. By the mid-1950s, every new work of his seemed to open up new perspectives for radical composing: key notions and genres such as serialism, electronic music, variable forms, and graphic notation were all crucially affected by his work. Of all post-war composers, Stockhausen best exemplifies Chateaubriand’s dictum that ‘‘the original writer is not the one who imitates no one, but he whom no one can imitate’’; whereas other major figures had hosts of epigones, Stockhausen’s huge influence largely involved his way of thinking about composition, which was constantly evolving and re-forming, rather than attempted emulations. At the same time, by the late 1960s he was also something of a cult figure in the pop/rock world, as witness his appearance on the cover of the Beatles’ ‘‘Sergeant Pepper’’ album. Yet from the mid-1970s, Stockhausen increasingly (though never totally) withdrew from the public eye, working for just over twenty-five years on a massive cycle of seven operas collectively entitled Licht [Light], involving about thirty hours of music––probably the most ambitious (completed) project in the whole of Western art music.

Among composers born in the 1950s, who witnessed the decline of the post-war avant-garde – together with its most cherished principle, integral serialism – the Finn Magnus Lindberg has produced some of the most challenging responses. It is tempting to attach considerable significance to Lindberg's national origins. Born in 1958, he belongs to a particularly vital generation of Finnish composers whose output extends from traditional symphonic forms to experimental creations involving electroacoustic and computer technology. On the one hand, they have benefitted from the example of composers (such as Aulis Sallinen) who emerged from Sibelius's shadow not only by founding a strong operatic tradition, but also by generating their own brand of orchestral music. On the other, several of the younger generation have continued the practice of studying abroad, though without sacrificing their independence from the European mainstream.

The emergence of radically new, avant-garde movements in German music and throughout Western Europe after WW2 has often been seen as expressing a strivings to create on a tabula rasa, in order to create distance from the horrors of the recent past. In the countries of the communist bloc, the imposed ideology of socialist realism also created a sharp break, similar to that in the West, except that Zero Hour was conceived in quite a different fashion, as a move in the opposite direction from Western modernism. The case of post-war music in Yugoslavia is examined under the light of the fact that the country did not belong to either bloc.

Background. In the Ukrainian art history, the problems of theatre criticism and the interrelations between criticism and stage art until remain insufficiently studied. The article considers the activities of the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre (until 1935 – the Theatre «Berezil») in the second half of the 1930s–1940s in the coverage of theatre criticism. Since 1933, the aesthetic course of this theatre had changed dramatically from avant-garde searches to socialist realism in connection with the defeat of the position of Les Kurbas and his dismissal from the theatre. This reversal of the creative course of the theatre becomes a subject of reflection in theatre criticism, which during this period also experienced fundamental transformations both in genre-style and in ideological aspects. Thus, the article analyzes the development of theatre criticism in the context of artistic phenomena of the second half of the 1930s–1940s. Objectives and methodology of the research. The objective of this study is to analyze the difficult period of stylistic changes in the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre in the second half of the 1930s–1940s, that was at the stage of formation of socialist realism in the Ukrainian art, from the viewpoint of theatre criticism of that time. System-historical and comparative-historical methods were used in the study. The results of the study. On the basis of the press reports on the activities of the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre the most important features and tendencies inherent in theatrical criticism of this period have been derived. The article deals with editions, in which during the period under study the materials about the T. Shevchenko Theatre appeared most often. These are, in particular, Kharkov newspapers «Krasnoye Znamia», «Sotsialisticheskaya Kharkovshchina», Kiev editions «Sovetskoye Iskusstvo», «Sovetskaya Ukraina», «Kievskaya Pravda», «Pravda Ukrainy», «Literatura i Iskusstvo», «Komsomolskaya Ukraina», «Proletarskaya Pravda», «Literaturnaya Gazeta». The articles about the tour performances of the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre were published in the editions of other cities, including the newspapers «Bugskaya Zarya» (Nikolaev), «Dnepropetrovskaya Pravda», «Zarya» (Dnepropetrovsk), «Bolshevistskaya Pravda» (Vinnitsa), «Lvovskaya Pravda», «Svobodnaya Ukraina» (Lviv), «Voroshilovgradskaya Pravda» (Luhansk), «Moskovskiy Bolshevik», «Komsomolskaya Pravda», «Trud» (Moscow). Since 1933 the theatre had its own edition – «Berezilets», which in 1935 got a new, ideologically correct name – «Za Sotsialisticheskiy Realizm» («For Socialist Realism»). The article outlines the circle of authors who practiced the theatre criticism professionally. It should be noted that the activities of the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre at that time was often described by journalists who published the notices occasionally. Among those who analyzed the theatrical process systematically, the most attention deserve the following critics: V. Morskoy, L. Livshits, B. Milyavsky, V. Chagovets, Y. Shovkoplyas, G. Gelfandbein, A. Gozenpud, V. Gavrilenko, A. Kostrov, A. Lein, D. Zaslavsky, Ya. Gan, Y. Pavlovsky. The critical notices by writers V. Sukhodolsky, Yu. Martych and L. Dmiterko have been considered separately as examples of a rather original glance at the performances and presence in the text of an expressive author’s style. During this period, under the pressure of strict ideological control over the art, quite stable canons of compiling notices were formed and took root, almost not allowing a critic to display his individuality. Among the features peculiar for the theatre criticism there were the uniformity of the titles of articles simply stating the play name, an extremely rare manifestation of specific position of the author regarding the stage work and transition to the level of figurative or conceptual understanding. The main matter of the analysis was rather the performance content, its subject, but not the means by which it is embodied; more attention was paid to the literary source, and not to the performance. In the first part of the notice, the play subject was usually explained from the standpoint of party ideology, often using the quotes from Soviet leaders’ speeches. Usually in a notice, the close attention was paid to acting and the actors performing the main roles. This peculiarity reflects disclosure of the new facets of talent of a number of actors of the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre of that period. It should be noted that actor’s individuality of I. Maryanenko, V. Chistyakova, M. Krushelnitsky, L. Serdyuk and others was displayed more powerful than in «Berezil». Giving priority to an actor in theatre criticism to a certain extent levelled the producer’s role. At that time, the palette of stage producer’s means should not was to be going beyond strict aesthetic requirements. It was necessary to remain in the stylistic framework of a life-like presentation, when a producer was fully focused on the actors, and M. Krushelnitsky, L. Dubovik, R. Cherkashin and others did it skilfully. The best examples of theatre criticism contained careful analysis of originality of their production. A notice briefly described the scenography and sometimes the composer’s work. The final part contained a laconic conclusion. On the one hand, such a scheme of compiling notices impoverished the critic’s possibilities, his freedom in expressing thoughts, and on the other hand, it set a clear structure for presenting the material. In this period, as it has been at all times, the performance notices remained the most popular genre of theatre criticism. Portraits of actors were printed occasionally. Interviews were rather rare (usually with a producer). Conclusions. Theatre criticism of the second half of the 1930s–1940s existed in strict limits dictated by ideological reasons, because of which it only partially elucidated the stylistic changes that took place in the T. Shevchenko Kharkov Theatre in this period. For an objective analysis of the activities of the theatre, it is necessary to address to a wide range of sources, in particular the recollections of the direct participants of the then theatrical process that were published later, in period of ideological “thaw”.

After World War I, Auric’s many friendships placed him in a unique position in the Parisian avant-garde. On the one hand, he was alongside Louis Aragon, André Breton, Philippe Soupault, and Tristan Tzara for the rise and fall of Paris dada. On the other, he was a member of Les Six, the group of composers led by Jean Cocteau who came to represent Parisian art music in the 1920s. Throughout the feuds between the dadaists and Cocteau, Auric preserved his friendships and functioned as an ambassador of sorts between rival avant-garde groups. In the meantime, his scores for Cocteau’s Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel (with the rest of Les Six) and Molière’s Les fâcheux would lead to bigger and better opportunities in the mid-1920s.

The debate on the museum definition undertaken at the 2019 Kyoto ICOM General Conference points to the role played contemporarily by museums and the expectations they have to meet. It also results as a consequence of changes happening in museums beginning as of the 19th century until today. Extremely important processes took place in the past century. Initially, the changes covered the museum operating methods, mainly within museum education and display, however, they also had an impact on the status of objects in museum collections in the context of artistic and ethnographic collections. One of the most interesting ideas for museum’s redefinition was that proposed in the 1st half of the 20th c. in the formula of Museums of Artistic Culture. However, the departure from the traditionally conceived museum towards a ‘laboratory of modernity’ proposed by the Russian Avant-garde was still too revolutionary for its times. Beginning as of the 1960s, next to the reflection on museums’ operating modes, there increased the emphasis on the role they played and the one they should play in modern society. It was phenomena of political, social or economic character that had a direct impact on the transformation of the shape of museums, these phenomena appearing under the banners of globalization, liberalization, democratization, glocalization. Criticism of museums and their up-to-then praxes drew attention to the essential character of the relation between the institution and its public. The turn towards society allowed for such formats to appear as an ecomuseum, participatory museum, open museum. The solutions derived from the New Museology not only point to the necessity to move the level of the relationship between museum and society, but first and foremost to reflect on museum’s activity which is assumed to create an institution maximally transparent and ethical. It is for various reasons that not all the solutions proposed by museums meet the criteria. Museums continue to face numerous challenges, yet they boast potential to face them.

Abstract This article aims to reassemble a feminist genealogy of the posthuman in the arts, with a specific focus on the visual works conceived by female artists after the rise of what has been retrospectively defined as first-wave Feminism. Starting with the main avant-garde movements of the first half of the twentieth century—specifically, Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism—this genealogy analyses the second-wave Feminism of the 1960s and 1970s, with its integral exploration of the body highlighted by performance art. Following this, it takes into account the third-wave Feminism of the 1990s and its radical re-elaboration of the self: from Cyberfeminism and its revisitation of technology, to the artistic insights offered, on the one side, by critical techno-orientalist readings of the futures, and on the other, by the political and social articulations of Afrofuturism and Chicanafuturism. Lastly, this genealogy accesses the ways contemporary female artists are dealing with gender, social media and the notion of embodiment, touching upon elements that will become of key importance in fourth-wave Feminism. This article is published as part of a collection dedicated to multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives on gender studies.

Brutalism was an architectural trend that emerged after World War II, and in the 1960s and 1970s, it spread throughout the world. The development of brutalist architecture was greatly influenced by post-war avant-garde art. The greatest impact on brutalism was exerted by such avant-garde trends as art autre, art brut, and musique concrète. Architects were most inspired by the works of such artists as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Schaeffer, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Nigel Henderson. The main aim of the research was to identify and characterize the most important ideas and principles common to avant-garde art and brutalist architecture. Due to the nature of the research problem and its complexity, the method of historical interpretative studies was used. The following research techniques were employed: analysis of the literature, comparative analysis, multiple case studies, descriptive analysis, and studies of buildings in situ. The research found the most important common ideas guiding brutalist architects and avant-garde artists: rejection of previous principles and doctrines; searching for the rudiments; mirroring the realities of everyday life; glorification of ordinariness; sincerity of the material, structure, and function; use of raw materials and rough textures.
