Four chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.) varieties were grown at Puumala, Finland (61°40' N, 28°15' E) in 1985—1989 from spring sowings on stony till soil, pH 5.8. The weather conditions in the experimental years were very different. For instance between 1987 and 1988 there was a difference of 5,3°C in the mean temperature of the growing periods (May- September). The four-year average of the fresh flower yield was 0.4 (0.1 —0.7) kg/m2. The yields varied greatly depending on the number of harvests, which depended on the weather conditions. One harvest could be obtained in 1986 and 1987, two in 1985 and three in 1988. In spite of the different weather conditions there were no differences in the content and composition of the essential oil distilled from the dry flowers.

We investigated the effects of the timing of shoot elongation on the flowering of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) in eastern Australia. Trees of cv. Kwai May Pink growing in Alstonville (lat. 28.9° S) were pruned during spring and summer, and subsequent shoot elongation was measured until the following spring. New shoots grew by discrete flushes, with the trees initiating 3, 2, or 1 vegetative shoots prior to winter, according to the pruning sequence. Shoots were vegetative when the mean temperature during early flush development was above 17-19°C, and floral at lower temperatures. Trees with successive flushes commencing in February (late summer) and June (early winter) were more likely to flower than trees with flushes commencing in April and August, because the weather conditions in June were cooler than those in August and more likely to favour induction. The importance of cool weather conditions during early flush development for floral determination was not significantly affected by the number of vegetative flushes to develop between pruning and winter. Having shown that the phase of recurrent flushing affects flowering, we sought to model the process in order to recognise reproductive and non-reproductive cycles along Australia's north-eastern seaboard, and to develop a management strategy for the promotion of flowering. From the results of the Alstonville pruning trial, the interval between successive flushes was regressed against the mean product of daily irradiation and mean daily temperature (°C.MJ/[m2.day]) during the interval. The regression was used in conjunction with long-term weather records to estimate the flush commencement dates required for the completion of 1 or 2 vegetative flushes by the winter solstice at different latitudes. The earliest date for the completion of 1 flush ranged from 16 February in northern New South Wales (lat. 30° S) to 13 March in northern Queensland (lat. 17° S). To test the model, a pruning trial was conducted near Mareeba (lat. 17° S). Trees pruned on 10 February, estimated to produce ≈ 1.5 flushes prior to winter (i.e. flushes in late autumn and early spring, but not in winter), flowered poorly and had low yields. In contrast, trees pruned on 11 March, estimated to produce 1 vegetative flush by winter, had good flowering and yields. Thus, strategic pruning after harvest can be used to manipulate flushing times, so that new, potentially flowering shoots emerge in winter. Cool temperatures are still required for successful flowering, and we provide estimates of the likelihood of such weather in the major growing areas by calculating the annual number of days with a mean temperature <20°C. For Cairns (lat. 16.9° S) the number of such days varied from 0 to 39 from 1888 to 1993, which is consistent with the irregular flowering of lychee in coastal northern Queensland. Our work is the first demonstration for any species that the phase of recurrent flushing affects flowering, and emphasises the interplay between a plant's endogenous developmental cycle and seasonal variations in weather.

Introduction. Weather conditions were implicated in the onset of spontaneous pneumothorax (SP). Aim. Investigate the influence of weather conditions on the onset of SP. Methods. A total of 200 patients with SP in Sousse (Tunisia) were enrolled in the study between January 2010 and December 2014. An analysis of two time series (meteorological data and pneumothorax cases) was performed. Data on weather conditions were collected daily throughout the 5-year period. Results. A comparison of the mean temperature between days with and without SP showed significantly higher temperatures during the days with SP. A decrease of 1% in the relative humidity one day lag (D-1) was associated with an increase in the risk of SP by 1.6% (p=0,02). The occurrence of clusters was associated significantly with higher temperature averages on the same days. This same observation was made regarding the mean duration of sunshine two days before the cluster onset (p = 0.05). The occurrence of storms two days before clusters was also significantly associated with a risk multiplied by 1.96. Conclusion. There was a correlation between clusters of spontaneous pneumothorax and weather conditions in the region of Sousse-Tunisia.

In our study we examined the variability of the essential oil content and composition of chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.) during three years (2005-2007). Twenty-eight populations of wild origin and 4 registered cultivars (‘Soroksári 40’, ‘Lutea’, ‘Goral’ and ‘Bona’) were evaluated in open field experiments. It could be established that the experimental populations represented different genetic potential for essential oil accumulation and composition. The best populations of wild growing origin from the Somogy-region and four cultivars produced the highest essential oil contents (above 0.6 g/100g) in each year. Additionally, the quality of the characteristic main compound of the oil determining the “chemotype “, according to Schilcher, was found to be stable during the three years period. However, the actual chemosyndroms are significantly influenced by the weather conditions. In the three years’ experiment, the moderately warm and relatively wet year of 2006 produced the highest contents of essential oil and also that of its α-bisabolol component. Although bisabolol oxide A also showed a high variability through the years, its direct connection with weather conditions could not be proved. A moderate variability was established for the proportions of chamazulene, and the lowest one for bisabolol-oxide B. Considerable genotype-weather interaction was supposed, especially for the essential oil content and for the ratio of bisabolol-oxide A.

In the present study, we analyzed the main parameters related with the potential fertilization ability of two grapevine varieties, Godello and Mencía, during the years 2017 and 2018. The research was carried out in two vineyards of the Galician winegrowing Designation of Origin areas of Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra. Ten vines of each variety were selected for bunch and flower counting, pollen calculations, pollen viability studies by means of aceto-carmine (AC) stain and 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) methods, and the determination of their germination rate. In all vineyards the 50% fruitset was reached, except for Godello in Cenlle during 2017. The mean coulure value was higher for Godello (40.5%) than for Mencía (31%). Analyzing the pollen production per plant and airborne pollen levels, we observed important discordances between them, which can be due to the influence of weather conditions and be related with self-pollination processes. We found important differences on pollen viability depending on the applied method and variety, with higher values for the AC method than the TTC for both varieties in all study plots, and higher values for Mencía variety than Godello. Regarding germination rates, we observed a marked reduction in 2017 with respect to 2018, in all study sites and for both varieties. The analyzed parameters were useful to explain the different productive abilities of Godello and Mencía varieties in the two studied bioclimatic regions of Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra.

Computer generated graphs are presented for the mean temperature difference in typical air cooler configurations, covering the combinations of numbers of passes and rows per pass of industrial interest. Two sets of independent variables are included in the graphs: the conventional one (heat capacity water ratio and cold fluid effectiveness), and the one required in an optimization technique of widespread use (hot fluid effectiveness and the number of heat transfer units). Flow arrangements with side-by-side and over-and-under passes, frequently found in actual practice, are discussed through examples.

The temperatures of 18 fires in an open jack pine barren near Timmins, Ontario, have been recorded. The maximum temperature recorded was 545 °C, although in other determinations fire temperatures in excess of 1000 °C were reached. The mean temperature of all fires was 340.6 ± 133.2 °C. Three fires at 230, 345, and 545 °C were considered in detail.The maximum temperature of a fire was normally recorded at heights of 5 cm or 10 cm above the surface. Maximum temperatures of hotter fires usually occurred at greater heights than cooler ones. Duration and the temperature ("intensity") of the fire are important aspects of fire studies.

Results of a recent joint experimental and computational investigation of the flow through a plenum-fed 7-7-7 shaped film cooling hole are presented. In particular, we compare the measured adiabatic effectiveness and mean temperature against implicit large eddy simulation (iLES) for blowing ratio approximately 2, density ratio 1.6, and Reynolds number 6000. The results overall show reasonable agreement between the iLES and the experimental results for the adiabatic effectiveness and gross features of the mean temperature field. Notable discrepancies include the centerline adiabatic effectiveness near the hole, where the iLES under-predicts the measurements by Δη ≈ 0.05, and the near-wall temperature, where the simulation results show features not present in the measurements. After showing this comparison, the iLES results are used to examine features that were not measured in the experiments, including the in-hole flow and the dominant fluxes in the mean internal energy equation downstream of the hole. Key findings include that the flow near the entrance to the hole is highly turbulent and that there is a large region of backflow near the exit of the hole. Further, the well-known counter-rotating vortex pair downstream of the hole is observed. Finally, the typical gradient diffusion hypothesis for the Reynolds heat flux is evaluated and found to be incorrect.
