The vibration dissipation mechanism of the rotating blade with a dovetail joint is studied in this paper. Dry friction damping plays an indispensable role in the direction of vibration reduction. The vibration level is reduced by consuming the total energy of the turbine blade with the dry friction device on the blade-root in the paper. The mechanism of the vibration reduction is revealed by the variation of the friction force and the energy dissipation ratio of dry friction. In this paper, the flexible blade with a dovetail interface feature is discretized by using the spatial beam element based on the finite element theory. Then the classical Coulomb-spring friction model is introduced to obtain the dry friction model on the contact interfaces of the tenon-mortise structure. What is more, the effects of the system parameters (such as the rotating speed, the friction coefficient, the installation angle of the tenon) and the excitation level on blade damping characteristics are discussed, respectively. The results show that the variation of the system parameters leads to a significant change of damping characteristics of the blade. The variation of the tangential stiffness and the position of the external excitation will affect the nonlinear characteristics and vibration damping characteristics.

AbstractThe responses of a simple harmonically excited dry friction oscillator are analysed in the case when the coefficients of static and kinetic coefficients of friction are different. One- and two-parameter bifurcation curves are determined at suitable parameters by continuation method and the largest Lyapunov exponents of the obtained solutions are estimated. It is shown that chaotic solutions can occur in broad parameter domains—even at realistic friction parameters—that are tightly enclosed by well-defined two-parameter bifurcation curves. The performed analysis also reveals that chaotic trajectories are bifurcating from special asymmetric solutions. To check the robustness of the qualitative results, characteristic bifurcation branches of two slightly modified oscillators are also determined: one with a higher harmonic in the excitation, and another one where Coulomb friction is exchanged by a corresponding LuGre friction model. The qualitative agreement of the diagrams supports the validity of the results.

After modifying the Wahime/Bay friction model, a new friction model suitable for micro-forming process without lubrication is established. In this model, it is shows that the friction coefficient is a function of strain hardening exponent, the normal pressure and the initial yield stress of material. Based on the experimental data, the micro-upsetting process is simulated using the proposed friction model. The simulation results are used to investigate the size effect on the dry friction behavior. It is found that the Coulomb’s friction coefficient is dropping with miniaturization of specimens when the amount of reduction is not too large.

In this paper, the phenomena of hysteretic behaviour of friction force observed during experiments are discussed. On the basis of experimental and theoretical analyses, we argue that such behaviour can be considered as a representation of the system dynamics. According to this approach, a classification of friction models, with respect to their sensitivity on the system motion characteristic, is introduced. General friction modelling of the phenomena accompanying dry friction and a simple yet effective approach to capture the hysteretic effect are proposed. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the numerical simulations for the proposed friction model.

This paper focuses on the vibration characteristics of the bladed-disk subjected to the dry friction damping under periodic excitation. Firstly, the multi-harmonic equation basing on the frequency-domain analysis is established to predicate the steady response of the bladed-disk. Then, the algorithm to solve the nonlinear multi-harmonic balance equation is given step by step. In the numerical simulation, a simplified lumped parameter model of a turbine bladed-disk as well as the elastic Coulomb friction model between the root and disk contacting surfaces are applied. The normal load level of the friction interfaces, which are the focal points of the bladed-disk design, is analysed for the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the blades. The results show that vibration response of bladed-disk is affected significantly by normal load, and there exists an optimal value of the normal load under the operating condition of the turbomachinery, which can provide a qualitative assessment for the design practice of friction dampers.

In turbomachines, dry friction resulting from stator–rotor contacts is a severe problem that may degrade lifetime of the machine or even lead to complete failure. Knowledge about the system states and contact forces is beneficial for system monitoring or to prevent contacts through, e.g., active magnetic bearings. In this paper, a nonlinear model is derived that describes the lateral rotor vibrations in the case of contact and no contact. The elastic behavior of the shaft is modeled based on the finite-element method. The contact is described by a dry friction model. An augmented system description is formulated that allows estimation of rotor displacements and contact forces by means of nonlinear filtering approaches like an extended Kalman filter. A simulation study was conducted that explicitly considered the hazardous backward whirl. The suggested approach shows suitable estimation performance related to both state and contact force estimation.

In this work, a continuum model is proposed to simulate and interpret the coupling vibration characteristics of a rotating disk-beam system with the dovetail interfaces. The dovetail interface feature is represented by a macroslip dry friction model. The present study also derives a new mode function to simulate the vibration of a rotating beam with loosely assembled dovetail attachment. The new proposed mode function is validated by comparing the natural characteristics and vibration response with those obtained from a finite element (FE) model. At last, based on the nonlinear response results obtained by the Newmark-β method, the effects of different parameters on the nonlinear dynamics of the coupling system are discussed. The following interesting phenomena have been revealed: the flexible disk can impose different influences on the response characteristics of the rotating beam. The effects of dry friction on the beam’s energy dissipation are significant, especially at a low rotational speed. Further analysis yields that the excitation level and friction coefficient also exhibit a significant impact on the damping effect of dry friction. Consequently, it should be noted that the optimal values of the contact surface’s parameters allow achieving a better damping effect in the engineering practice.
