Introduction: The first step in the process of acquisition of impact factor for a scientific journal is to get registered at Thomson Reuters Web of Science database. Aim: The aim of this article is to evaluate the content and structure of Orvosi Hetilap with regards to selection criteria of Thomson Reuters, in particular to objectives of citation analysis. Methods: Authors evaluated issues of Orvosi Hetilap published in 2011 and calculated the unofficial impact factor of the journal based on systematic search in various citation index databases. Number of citations, quality of citing journals and scientific output of the editorial board members were evaluated. Adherence to guidelines of international publishers was assessed, as well. Results: Unofficial impact factor of Orvosi Hetilap has been continuously rising every year in the past decade (except for 2004 and 2010). The articles of Orvosi Hetilap are widely cited by international authors and high impact factor journals, too. Further, more than half the articles cited are open access. The most frequently cited categories are original and review articles as well as clinical studies. Orvosi Hetilap is a weekly published journal, which is covered by many international databases such as PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and BIOSIS Previews. As regards to the scientific output of the editorial board members, the truncated mean of the number of their publications was 497, citations 2446, independent citations 2014 and h-index 21. Conclusions: While Orvosi Hetilap fulfils many criteria for getting covered by Thomson Reuters, it is worthwhile to implement a method of online citation system in order to increase the number of citations. In addition, scientific publications of all editorial board members should be made easily accessible. The scientific and editorial programming orientation of the scientific journal INFORMATOLOGIA (1969. – 2019.) was based on the historical, present and future promotion of information and communication sciences, publishing of selected scien-tific and professional papers by renowned internationally recognized information and communication scientists, who have earned their scientific achievements on an ongoing basis place on the pages of the reputable magazine INFORMATOLOGIA. The editorial and programmatic orientation of the scientific journal Informatologia (1969. – 2019.) was based on, numerous scientific and professional critical editorial dilemmas, analyzing, valorizing and selecting quality scientific information and communication production for publication in the journal Informatologia. In a strategic journalistic sense, the editorial board members respected high scientific standards, peer-reviewed expert opinion, and affirmed selection based on critical awareness and ethical editorial principles in the selection of copyrighted productions for the publication of scientific and professional papers.

Researchers rely on a system of scientometric ratings when they assess the development of a scientific journal. This approach does not allow us to understand the reasons for the results achieved and the specifics of the business model of the publication. The paper describes the study of scientific journals through a prism of the ecosystem approach. The hypothesis is tested that a highly rated scientific journal, its authors and readers together represent a closed ecosystem with specific properties. The research methodology is based on the author’s toolkit which consists on the calculation of ecosystem closeness indicators: the share of affiliated authors, their correlation with the average influence of a paper, diversity and fluidity. The authors suggest that low rates of variability and diversity indicate a closed type of journal ecosystem. Generalization and interpretation of empirical results was carried out by the method of cluster analysis. The information base is a panel metadata of 20 scientific Russian journals for 2013–2020, which have the maximum Science Index ratings on economic and management fields. Also, the authors analyzed the data on the number and level of concentration publications by the editorial board members and staff of the holding institution, as well as the intensity of publications of individual authors. There have been identified four clusters of studied journals being as a base of the empirical verification. The first and third clusters are characterized by the highest rate of closeness. The lowest level of variability in the sample has been recorded for the third cluster. The journals of the second and fourth clusters have a conditionally closed ecosystem and have been characterized by a top-rated of variability. They are characterized by a low share of publications by affiliated authors. However, it was revealed that there had been a group of authors who had a significant impact on the journal’s ecosystem development. The study results can be of value for the strategies formation of scientific journals development.

The article represents the scientific achievements and work of a Ukrainian botanist, candidate of agricultural sciences, director of the O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden (1987–2006, 2008–2012), Vasyl Kapustyan, who died on August 19, 2020, after a long illness.Vasyl Kapustyan was born on July 24, 1942. In 1965 he graduated from the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy, and in 1972 received the degree of candidate of agricultural sciences. Since 1974, the work of Vasyl Kapustyan was associated with the O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden, where he served in 1975–1987 as deputy director and head of the sector of tropical and subtropical plants, in 1987–1997 – as director and head of the sector of tropical and subtropical plants, and from 1997 – exclusively as director of the Botanical Garden.The scientific work of Vasyl Kapustyan was related to the introduction of tropical and subtropical plants, their conservation, and rational use. He was the author of over 80 scientific articles and monographs, the last of which was dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the botanical garden. Since the founding of the series “Introduction and Conservation of Plant Diversity” of the “Bulletin of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv”, Vasyl Kapustyan was its editor-in-chief. He was also a member of the Academic Councils of Kyiv University and Faculty of Biology, chairman of the Academic Council of the Botanical Garden, a member of the Bureau of the Council of Botanical Gardens of Ukraine, and a member of the editorial board of the international scientific journal “Plant Introduction”. He was the founder and scientific director of the Museum of the Botanical Garden History, which opened in 2004.

Twelve academic critics (interested in the management of academic journals) have been invited to partake in the composition of this editorial. They have engaged in three main rounds to craft standards for journals. Five holistic standards have been manufactured, each one consisting of measurable key performance indicators. The first is human potential, which discusses, for instance, the representation of genders among editorial board members and reviewers. The second is ethics, for example, problematising the practice of judging articles and journals merely based on their ability to attract citations, and thus make a so-called ‘impact’. The third is regulations, deeming it necessary to ensure transparency and protect authors' rights (e.g. by publishing the expected time from submission to first decisions). The fourth is digital quality, such as the online publication of manuscripts right after their acceptance. The fifth is technical sophistication, including the availability of regularly published statistics on the journal’s workflow. This editorial has three strong points: first, it discusses the proposed standards by comparing them with existing standards imposed by major organisations (namely Scopus and Clarivate); second, it sheds light on potential challenges that may be encountered when exposing Arab journals to the proposed standards, hoping that these standards act as a starting point for a fundamental reform in Arab journals; third, it evaluates the Scientific Journal of King Faisal University according to the proposed standards, thereby empirically testing out these standards.

Dear readers,The year 2017 marks the 55th anniversary of the Journal of Information & Communications of the Ministry of Information and Communications, and the 18th anniversary of its scientific publication – the Research and Development on Information and Communication Technology (RD-ICT) journal. Again, the purpose of RD-ICT is to provide a forum for researchers and professionals to disseminate original and innovative ideas in the fields of information technology, communications and electronics in Vietnam and worldwide.Without kind support and invaluable contribution of readers and authors, and hard work of the anonymous reviewers and editors under the former editorship of Prof. Nguyễn Thúc Hải, Prof. Trần Văn Lộc and Prof. Nguyễn Cảnh Tuấn, RD-ICT would not be what it is today – a total of 37 issues in Vietnamese and 14 issues in English.To contribute to the development of research in Vietnam, toward standard practices, high quality and international visibility, RD-ICT has been taking measures by following current practices of prestigious international research journals. In this editorial, we would like to inform you some of the things we have been doing lately.Since June 2014, RD-ICT has applied online journal management and publishing, thanks to the well-known open-source Open Journal System of the Public Knowledge Project, which is used by thousands of online scientific journals worldwide. The editorial board of RD-ICT is currently being extended to include international prominent scientists, thus forming a team of international associate editors, under the complementary technical editorship of Prof. Đỗ Ngọc Minh (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, United States), Prof. Nguyễn Hoàng Hà (University of Saskatchewan, Canada) and Prof. Nguyễn Linh Trung (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). Each submission is now assigned to an associate editor who then coordinates the review process and makes editorial decision.For improved paper quality in terms of organization and presentation, authors are guided to good practice of technical paper writing.
