This paper studies an optimal design of grid topology and integrated photovoltaic (PV) and centralized battery energy storage considering techno-economic aspect in low voltage distribution systems for urban area in Cambodia. This work aims at searching for an optimal topology including size of the battery energy storage by two different methods over the planning study of 15 years. Firstly, the shortest path algorithm (SPA) and first-fit bin-packing algorithm (FFBPA) are used to find out the topology which minimize the line and the load balancing. Secondly, mixed integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP) algorithms are developed to search for a topology which minimize conductor use and the load balancing improvement. Next, Genetic algorithm is developed to size the maximum PV peak power connected into LV network with respected to voltage and current constraints. Then, the size of battery energy storage procedure is established in order to eliminate the reverse power flow going on medium voltage (MV) grid and to improve the autonomous operation time of system. A discounted cost method is used to evaluate the solutions for different methods. Lastly, an urban area in Cambodia is chosen as a case study in this paper. Simulation results confirm the proposed method in this research.

Microgrids are handy units for a utility since their units such as distributed energy resources (DER) and loads can able to control the power ingestion or production. Moreover, it is used to assimilate renewable energy resources (RES) to small distribution systems. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are employed to recompense the sporadic output of RES. Similarly, DC microgrid for a home can be excellently controlled by an energy management system (EMS) using fuzzy logic controller (FLC) of 25-rules alone to control the power flow. The system has photovoltaic (PV), Fuel Cell (FC) and battery energy storage (BES). This study aims to introduce firefly algorithm (FA) to optimize FLC in order to increase the system energy saving efficiency and to reduce the cost.

Microgrid has been considered as a new green and reliable power system technique, especially for remote regions. In recent years, there is a steady increasing in studying optimal microgrid deploying and operation strategies. Multi-objective optimization is the most interesting approach for resolving these issues. The multi-objective optimization includes energy operation cost and emission pollutant cost. Potential benefits of using model predictive control (MPC) strategy for multi-objective dispatch problem in microgrid with fluctuant energy resources, such as solar, wind and alike are also presented by comparing with the strategy of day-ahead programming strategy and normal strategy with no battery energy storage. Simulation results show that the proposed model in this paper could reflect the actual characteristics of microgrid more precisely.
