We report on the study of single-mode fiber-laser-pumped mode-locked Yb:CALYO lasers via using a passive saturable absorber and Kerr-lens mode-locking technique, respectively. Up to 3.1-W average power with 103-fs pulse duration is obtained from the passive mode-locking, and down to 36-fs pulse duration with more than 2-W average power is achieved by the pure Kerr-lens mode-locking, which is to the best of our knowledge, the highest average power from a reported sub-40-fs Yb-based solid-state oscillator.

A novel 2H-phase transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)–tantalum selenide (TaSe2) with metallic bandgap structure is a potential photoelectric material. A band structure simulation of TaSe2 via ab initio method indicated its metallic property. An effective multilayered TaSe2 saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated using liquid-phase exfoliation and optically driven deposition. The prepared 2H–TaSe2 SA was successfully used for a dual-wavelength Q-switched fiber laser with the minimum pulse width of 2.95 μs and the maximum peak power of 64 W. The repetition rate of the maximum pulse energy of 89.9 kHz was at the level of 188.9 nJ. The metallic 2H–TaSe2 with satisfactory saturable absorbing capability is a promising candidate for pulsed laser applications.

A saturable absorber (SA) based on niobium diselenide (NbSe2), which is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) in the VB group, is fabricated by the optically driven deposition method, and the related nonlinear optical properties are characterized. The modulation depth, saturable intensity, and nonsaturable loss of the as-prepared NbSe2 nanosheet-based SA are measured to be 16.2%, 0.76 MW/cm2, and 14%, respectively. By using the as-fabricated NbSe2 SA, a highly stable, passively Q-switched, erbium-doped, all-fiber laser is realized. The obtained shortest pulse width is 1.49 μs, with a pulse energy of 48.33 nJ at a center wavelength of 1560.38 nm. As far as we know, this is the shortest pulse duration ever obtained by an NbSe2 SA in a Q-switched fiber laser.
