In continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, the macroscopic failure mode in transverse long-term failure is dominated by a brittle crack-growth mechanism. Neat thermoplastic matrices, on the other hand, generally display also a plasticity-controlled mechanism in long-term loading at elevated stress levels and/or temperature. This failure mechanism requires a different approach to lifetime prediction than crack growth; hence, it is important to identify it in the long-term performance of composites. In this study, we demonstrate the presence of the plasticity-controlled failure mechanism in long-term failure of transversely loaded unidirectional (UD) thermoplastic composites made of glass/iPP, carbon/PEEK and carbon/PEKK. The main method used is to compare the lifetime in cyclic loading to that in static loading at the same level of maximum stress, where an increase in lifetime is characteristic for plasticity controlled failure, and, vice versa, a decrease is indicative for fatigue crack growth. In addition, the applicability of a lifetime prediction method common to plasticity-controlled failure of neat thermoplastics is evaluated for the composites investigated. The results of this study indicate that the plasticity-controlled failure was present in composites, although the extent to which the effects are present varied depending on the materials investigated. Glass/iPP showed the most explicit evidence of the plasticity-controlled failure over the entire load range experimentally covered. Its long-term failure was delayed with a decrease in the stress ratio and lifetime was predicted well using the principles of plasticity-controlled failure.

The failure mechanism analysis of dam foundations is key for designing hydropower stations. This study analyses the rock masses in a sluice section, which is an important part of the main dam of the Datengxia Hydropower Station currently built in China. The stability of the sluice rock masses is predominantly affected by gentle through-going soft interlayers and steep structural fractures. Its foundation failure mechanism is investigated by means of a numerical method, i.e., Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) and the geomechanical model method. The modeling principle and process, and results for the rock dam foundation are introduced and generated by using the abovementioned two methods. The results indicate that the failure mechanism of the foundation rock masses, as characterized by gentle through-going and steep structural discontinuities, is not a conventional type of shear failure mechanism but a buckling one. This type of failure mechanism is verified by analyzing the deformation features resulting from the overloading of both methods and strength reduction of the numerical method.

The aim was to analyze failure mechanism of electromagnetic relay caused by mechanical impact. The principle of electromagnetic relays was studied and the effect of mechanical impact on electromagnetic relays was analyzed in this paper. Based on the established magnetic circuit model, the relationship of the magnetic field strength, the electromagnetic attraction and the impact damage degree was studied. Then, the damage intensity of mechanical impact on magnetic circuit was decided. Afterwards, the structure of electromagnetic relays was improved, and the mechanical impact simulation was studied by ANSYS. The results show that the uncontrollability of electromagnetic relay is mainly caused by air gap, which is aroused by mechanical impact; in addition, the size of air gap is inversely proportional to electromagnetic attraction force. Moreover, the improved structure of relays can increase impact resistance and broaden the scope of engineering application of electromagnetic relay.

Predicting the lifetime of a LED lighting system is important for the implementation of design specifications and comparative analysis of the financial competition of various illuminating systems. Most lifetime information published by LED manufacturers and standardization organizations is limited to certain temperature and current values. However, as a result of different working and ambient conditions throughout the whole operating period, significant differences in lifetimes can be observed. In this article, an advanced method of lifetime prediction is proposed considering the initial task areas and the statistical characteristics of the study values obtained in the accelerated fragmentation test. This study proposes a new method to predict the lifetime of COB LED using an artificial intelligence approach and LM-80 data. Accordingly, a database with 6000 hours of LM-80 data was created using the Neuro-Fuzzy (ANFIS) algorithm, and a highly accurate lifetime prediction method was developed. This method reveals an approximate similarity of 99.8506% with the benchmark lifetime. The proposed methodology may provide a useful guideline to lifetime predictions of LED-related products which can also be adapted to different operating conditions in a shorter time compared to conventional methods. At the same time, this method can be used in the life prediction of nanosensors and can be produced with the 3D technique.
