In this thesis we investigate classical integrability of the string worldsheet on different super-gravity backgrounds. We focus in particular on the class of half-supersymmetric AdS7 solutions of Massive Type IIA supergravity, that are thought to be the near-horizon limit of a D6-D8-NS5 Hanany-Witten brane set-up, and are dual to six-dimensional conformal field theories with N = (1, 0) supersymmetry. We use both analytical and numerical methods to show the (bosonic sector of the) string worldsheet is non-integrable on most of these backgrounds. The backgrounds on which the string is integrable are an infinite massless solution (corresponding to an infinite constant quiver), and a background corresponding to an infinite linear quiver theory. In addition we find that the (bosonic sector of the) string is integrable on a background that we call AdS7 × (S3)λ. For this background we show that it corresponds to a 6d SCFT with an infinitely long quiver with an infinite number of flavour groups, all proportional to the colour groups. We study this particular supergravity background in detail, and suggest it corresponds to the large-N limit of the dual SCFT in the limit where the Chern-Simons level k goes to infinity. This integrable AdS7 × (S3)λ background can be obtained as the λ-deformation of AdS7×S3. In this context we study integrable deformations of supergravity backgrounds in the last part of this thesis, in particular non-Abelian T-duality. We present another back-ground on which the string is integrable by performing two non-Abelian T-dualities on two three-spheres inside the AdS5×S5 solution and study the resulting background.

AbstractWe apply the methods recently developed for computation of type IIA disk instantons using mirror symmetry to a large class of D-branes wrapped over Lagrangian cycles of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Along the way we clarify the notion of “flat coordinates” for the boundary theory. We also discover an integer IR ambiguity needed to define the quantum theory of D-branes wrapped over non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds. In the large N dual Chern-Simons theory, this ambiguity is mapped to the UV choice of the framing of the knot. In a type IIB dual description involving (p; q) 5-branes, disk instantons of type IIA get mapped to (p; q) string instantons. The M-theory lift of these results lead to computation of superpotential terms generated by M2 brane instantons wrapped over 3-cycles of certain manifolds of G2 holonomy.

We study several types of classical rotating membrane solutions in AdS 4 ×Q1, 1, 1 and discuss their field theory duals. Q1, 1, 1 is a seven-dimensional Sasaki–Einstein manifold given as a nontrivial U(1) fibration over S2×S2×S2, equipped with SU(2)3 ×U(1) isometry. It is recently suggested that there exist quiver Chern–Simons theories which are dual to M-theory in certain orbifolds of Q1, 1, 1. The membrane solutions we consider have in general nonvanishing angular momenta both in AdS 4 and Q1, 1, 1 spaces. We present solutions for folded and wrapped membranes. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, such classical solutions are dual to long operators of the dual conformal field theories in the large coupling limit. We analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the dispersion relation between energy (conformal dimension) and angular momenta (global charges).

Abstract We study the space of 3d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 6 SCFTs by combining numerical bootstrap techniques with exact results derived using supersymmetric localization. First we derive the superconformal block decomposition of the four-point function of the stress tensor multiplet superconformal primary. We then use supersymmetric localization results for the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 6 U(N)k × U(N + M)−k Chern-Simons-matter theories to determine two protected OPE coefficients for many values of N, M, k. These two exact inputs are combined with the numerical bootstrap to compute precise rigorous islands for a wide range of N, k at M = 0, so that we can non-perturbatively interpolate between SCFTs with M-theory duals at small k and string theory duals at large k. We also present evidence that the localization results for the U(1)2M × U (1 + M)−2M theory, which has a vector-like large-M limit dual to higher spin theory, saturates the bootstrap bounds for certain protected CFT data. The extremal functional allows us to then conjecturally reconstruct low-lying CFT data for this theory.

Abstract We consider symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in AdS3/CFT2 coupled to U(1) Chern-Simons theory. We identify the holographic dual of the charged moments in the two-dimensional conformal field theory as a charged Wilson line in the bulk of AdS3, namely the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic minimally coupled to the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field. We identify the holonomy around the Wilson line as the Aharonov-Bohm phases which, in the two-dimensional field theory, are generated by charged U(1) vertex operators inserted at the endpoints of the entangling interval. Furthermore, we devise a new method to calculate the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy by relating the generating function for the charged moments to the amount of charge in the entangling subregion. We calculate the subregion charge from the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field sourced by the bulk Wilson line. We use our method to derive the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for Poincaré patch and global AdS3, as well as for the conical defect geometries. In all three cases, the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy is determined by the length of the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic and the Chern-Simons level k, and fulfills equipartition of entanglement. The asymptotic symmetry algebra of the bulk theory is of $$ \hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)}_k $$ u ̂ 1 k Kac-Moody type. Employing the $$ \hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)}_k $$ u ̂ 1 k Kac-Moody symmetry, we confirm our holographic results by a calculation in the dual conformal field theory.

We propose an effective Lagrangian for the low energy theory of the Pfaffian states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the bulk in terms of non-Abelian Chern–Simons (CS) actions. Our approach exploits the connection between the topological Chern–Simons theory and chiral conformal field theories. This construction can be used to describe a large class of non-Abelian FQH states.

Abstract In this paper we provide a Chern-Simons gravity dual of a two dimensional conformal field theory on a manifold with boundaries, so called boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). We determine the correct boundary action on the end of the world brane in the Chern-Simons gauge theory. This reproduces known results of the AdS/BCFT for the Einstein gravity. We also give a prescription of calculating holographic entanglement entropy by employing Wilson lines which extend from the AdS boundary to the end of the world brane. We also discuss a higher spin extension of our formulation.

We provide a brief introduction to the ABJM theory, the level kU(N) × U(N) superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory which has been conjectured to describe N coincident M2 -branes. We discuss its dual formulation in terms of M -theory on AdS4 × S7/ℤk and review some of the evidence in favor of the conjecture. We end with a brief discussion of the important role played by the monopole operators.

Some tetrahedra in SUk(2) Chern-Simons-Witten theory are computed. The results can be used to compute an arbitrary tetrahedron inductively by fusing with the fundamental representation. The results obtained are in agreement with those of quantum groups. By associating a (finite) topological field theory (FTFT) to every rational conformal field theory (RCFT), we show that the pentagon and hexagon equations in RCFT follow directly from some skein relations in FTFT. By generalizing the operation of surgery on links in FTFT, we also derive an explicit expression for the modular transformation matrix S(k) of the one-point conformal blocks on a torus in RCFT and the equations satisfied by S(k), in agreement with those required in RCFT. The implication of our results on the general program of classifying RCFT is also discussed.
