In this thesis we investigate on the role that dualities play nowadays in our under-standing of string and Quantum Field Theories. The first part is devoted to holographic dualities, where the case of the string dual of certain one-, two- and four dimensional field theories is explored in detail. We begin in Chapter 1 by discussing the holographic dual of a broad class of four-dimensional field theories. We specialise to the case of quiver field theories where a number of formulas computing charges, number of branes and Linking Numbers are given. We then introduce marginal deformations in the supergravity backgrounds to uncover infinite new families of solutions to type II supergravity and M-theory. In Chapter 2, we discuss spin 2 fluctuations around a class of warped AdS3 backgrounds. We identify explicitly the dual operators of a given protected sector. Also, a formula for the central charge of the dual two-dimensional field theories is derived. In Chapter 3, we introduce two new classes of geometries with an AdS2 factor. We outline the importance to black hole physics and in one case give a prescription for the dual field theories. The second part is devoted to QFT/QFT dualities in Chern-Simons theories, and how dualities between Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions can be motivated in string theory. It is found that a known duality between three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories with unitary gauge symmetry can be motivated by a brane setup in Type 0B string theory with an orientifold. In particular, the phase diagram of unitary QCD3 is inferred from a dual theory.

Abstract We study the torus partition functions of free bosonic CFTs in two dimensions. Integrating over Narain moduli defines an ensemble-averaged free CFT. We calculate the averaged partition function and show that it can be reinterpreted as a sum over topologies in three dimensions. This result leads us to conjecture that an averaged free CFT in two dimensions is holographically dual to an exotic theory of three-dimensional gravity with U(1)c×U(1)c symmetry and a composite boundary graviton. Additionally, for small central charge c, we obtain general constraints on the spectral gap of free CFTs using the spinning modular bootstrap, construct examples of Narain compactifications with a large gap, and find an analytic bootstrap functional corresponding to a single self-dual boson.

We study parity violation in (2+1)-dimensional gauge theories coupled to massive fermions. Using the ζ function regularization approach we evaluate the ground state fermion current in an arbitrary gauge field background, showing that it gets two different contributions which violate parity invariance and induce a Chern–Simons term in the gauge field effective action. One is related to the well-known classical parity breaking produced by a fermion mass term in three dimensions; the other, already present for massless fermions, is related to peculiarities of gauge-invariant regularization in odd-dimensional spaces.

Some geometric and topological implications of noncommutative Wilson loops are explored via the Seiberg-Witten map. In the abelian Chern-Simons theory on a three-dimensional manifold, it is shown that the effect of noncommutativity is the appearance of6nnew knots at thenth order of the Seiberg-Witten expansion. These knots are trivial homology cycles which are Poincaré dual to the higher-order Seiberg-Witten potentials. Moreover the linking number of a standard 1-cycle with the Poincaré dual of the gauge field is shown to be written as an expansion of the linking number of this 1-cycle with the Poincaré dual of the Seiberg-Witten gauge fields. In the process we explicitly compute the noncommutative “Jones-Witten” invariants up to first order in the noncommutative parameter. Finally in order to exhibit a physical example, we apply these ideas explicitly to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. It is explicitly displayed at first order in the noncommutative parameter; we also show the relation to the noncommutative Landau levels.

We use conformal embeddings involving exceptional affine Kac-Moody algebras to derive new dualities of three-dimensional topological field theories. These generalize the familiar level-rank duality of Chern-Simons theories based on classical gauge groups to the setting of exceptional gauge groups. For instance, one duality sequence we discuss is (E_{N})_{1}\leftrightarrow SU(9-N)_{-1}(EN)1↔SU(9−N)−1. Others such as SO(3)_{8}\leftrightarrow PSU(3)_{-6},SO(3)8↔PSU(3)−6, are dualities among theories with classical gauge groups that arise due to their embedding into an exceptional chiral algebra. We apply these equivalences between topological field theories to conjecture new boson-boson Chern-Simons-matter dualities. We also use them to determine candidate phase diagrams of time-reversal invariant G_{2}G2 gauge theory coupled to either an adjoint fermion, or two fundamental fermions.

Abstract We study solutions of type IIB string theory dual to $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on half of ℝ3,1 coupled to holographic three-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) at the edge of this half-space. The dual geometries are asymptotically AdS5×S5 with boundary geometry ℝ2,1×ℝ+, with a geometrical end-of-the-world (ETW) brane cutting off the other half of the asymptotic region of the would-be Poincaré AdS5×S5. We show that by choosing the 3D SCFT appropriately, this ETW brane can be pushed arbitrarily far towards the missing asymptotic region, recovering the “missing” half of Poincaré AdS5×S5. We also show that there are 3D SCFTs whose dual includes a wedge of Poincaré AdS5×S5 with an angle arbitrarily close to π, with geometrical ETW branes on either side.

We discuss the generalization of Abelian Chern-Simons theories when θ-angles and magnetic monopoles are included. We map these three dimensional theories into sectors of two-dimensional conformal field theories. The introduction of θ-angles allows us to establish in a consistent fashion a connection between Abelian Chern-Simons and 2-d free scalar field compactified on a noneven integral lattice. The Abelian Chern-Simons with magnetic monopoles is related to a conformal field theory in which the sum of the charges of the chiral vertex operators inside a correlator is different from zero.

We couple three-dimensional Chern–Simons gauge theory with BF theory and study deformations of the theory by means of the antifield BRST formalism. We analyze all possible consistent interaction terms for the action under physical requirements and find a new topological field theory in three dimensions with new nontrivial terms and a nontrivial gauge symmetry. We analyze the gauge symmetry of the theory and point out the theory that has the gauge symmetry based on the Courant algebroid.

We analyze the phase structure of the CPn−1 model in three-dimensional space–time coupled to fermions, paying special attention to the role played by the Chern–Simons term generated by the fermions. A rich phase structure arises from the large-n expansion.
