By combining the technical and empirical research methods, this article aims at establishing the role of the landforms in the location of Roman settlements and fortifications in Northern Transylvania, Romania, focusing on the Dacia Porolissensis (province of the Roman Empire) border and how (and if) these elements are still present in the local identity. Cartographic methods helped us to achieve the technical part. We used the ArcMap 10.6 software. The result obtained through digital modelling is the morphometric identification of the territorial discontinuities. Considering the qualitative aspects, the used methods were the traditional ones: analysis, synthesis, induction, and deduction. These methods enabled us to better understand how these settlements influenced the regional identity. The results of the study are emphasizing the strategical importance of the landforms in establishing the Roman castrum, and it demonstrates how (or if) the associated settlements remained present in the locals’ mentality and influenced the regional identity.

In the article the problem of the interconnection of social philosophy and social psychology is considered. The dialectic of their relationship is analyzed. Based on the work of domestic philosophers and psychologists, the author reveals the methodological nature of the principles of social philosophy to determine the essence of social psychology. The importance of the researches of G. Steintal, M. Lazar, V. Wundt, G. Lebon and G. Tarde for the development of social psychology as a scholar discipline is investigated. It is emphasized that social philosophy and social psychology are complementary. Social philosophy is based on the theoretical and methodological principles of analysis, and social psychology is the concrete factual material of individual and super-individual being, since empirical research methods occupy a significant place in social psychology, the role of which is much less in social philosophy. Social philosophy uses the theoretical and methodological principles of analysis, and social psychology is distinguished by the concrete factual material of individual and super-individual being. Empirical research methods occupy a significant place in social psychology, their role is much less in social philosophy.

This chapter investigates how researchers create knowledge in criminology. It covers two themes: first, the empirical research methods used in the discipline, and how understanding and knowledge of crime can be developed by applying, analysing, and evaluating criminological information. Secondly, the chapter discusses how this knowledge and understanding is influenced by the three important and interlinking factors of subjectivity (personal and disciplinary perspectives and opinions), supposition (guesswork, assumption), and study (for example, scholarship and conducting empirical and other types of research). ‘Empirical methods’ are the generation of evidence through (sensory) experience, particularly using experiments and observations. The chapter looks at the different research methods available to criminologists, covering both primary and secondary sources.
