To stop the spread of the Coronavirus, people must avoid infection risk. Given widespread skepticism regarding information concerning the Coronavirus received from authorities, one potentially important pathway to estimate the infectiousness of one’s group members could be through gossip (i.e., information about an absent target). Infection risk is reflected by both infection status and adherence to social distancing norms. In hypothetical scenarios ( N = 837), participants received gossip that we manipulated to describe a group member’s infection status and/or norm adherence. Results showed people tended to believe gossip and that gossip influenced behavioral intentions to avoid and punish targets of gossip as well as the perception of targets. We conclude that gossip, while potentially unreliable, could affect how people treat group members. We discuss how gossip could alleviate the Coronavirus crisis by contributing to slowing the Coronavirus’s spread, as well as exacerbate it through increased social exclusion based on unverified information.

 Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID - 19) crisis led to a significant strain on oncological services with reallocation of resources towards Coronavirus infection. Assessment of the risk-benefit ratio and prioritization of cancer patients was necessary. In the absence of a vaccine, drug or presence of a herd immunity (as a result of disease transmission), it was a like a double-edged sword for cancer patients, where they had to choose between either an increasing risk of infection transmission or a delay in cancer treatment for mitigation of Coronavirus infection. Academic activities, trainings, examinations (theoretical/practical) and all research activities were put on hold. Timely delivery of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy was delayed even for patients with curative cancer. Current pandemic offered an opportunity towards increasing the awareness and adoption of virtual technological innovations to interact and educate, formulate clinical guidelines, researching newer modalities and drugs and promoting a great sense of mutual understanding and collaboration among healthcare workers all over the globe.

The new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is rampant. The most troublesome part of this infection is the time between infection and onset and the infectiveness for several days even in the not-onset state. Therefore, a considerable number of infected persons with infectivity are left unchecked. Therefore, even if the infection status is simulated by the SIR equation or the like, the true values of the infection parameters and the true number of infected persons cannot be grasped. However, it is possible to observe the infection status, and the daily number of infected people and the cumulative number of infected people are announced. These numbers are not true values, but they reflect true values. It is impossible to grasp the true value only by the SIR equation, but it will be possible to estimate the true value by combining it with the observation equation. In short, the data assimilation framework is considered to be effective. We report this effectiveness because we were able to confirm this effectiveness from the numerical results.

Structurally-oriented biologists examine cells, tissues, organelles and macromolecules in order to gain insight into cellular and molecular physiology by relating structure to function. The understanding of these structures can be greatly enhanced by the use of techniques for the visualization and quantitative analysis of three-dimensional structure. Three projects from current research activities will be presented in order to illustrate both the present capabilities of computer aided techniques as well as their limitations and future possibilities.The first project concerns the three-dimensional reconstruction of the neuritic plaques found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. We have developed a software package “Synu” for investigation of 3D data sets which has been used in conjunction with laser confocal light microscopy to study the structure of the neuritic plaque. Tissue sections of autopsy samples from patients with Alzheimer's disease were double-labeled for tau, a cytoskeletal marker for abnormal neurites, and synaptophysin, a marker of presynaptic terminals.

Ethnogeriatrics is an evolving specialty in geriatric care that focuses on the health and aging issues in the context of culture for older adults from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This article is an introduction to ethnogeriatrics for healthcare professionals including speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This article focuses on significant factors that contributed to the development of ethnogeriatrics, definitions of some key concepts in ethnogeriatrics, introduces cohort analysis as a teaching and clinical tool, and presents applications for speech-language pathology with recommendations for use of cohort analysis in practice, teaching, and research activities.

Abstract. The introduction of the Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998 ) has stimulated numerous research activities. The IAT is supposed to measure the degree of association between concepts. Instances have to be assigned to these concepts by pressing appropriate keys as quickly as possible. The reaction time difference between certain conditions, termed the IAT effect, is used as an indicator of the degree of the concepts’ association. We tested the hypothesis that the degree of association between one concept (or category) and the instances of the other presented concept also influences reaction times. In our experiment, the instances in the target categories, male and female names, were kept constant. The adjectives in the evaluative categories were manipulated: Either the pleasant adjectives were female-associated and the unpleasant adjectives were male-associated, or vice versa. These stereotypic associations were indeed found to exert a substantial influence on the size of the IAT effect. This finding casts doubt on the assumption that the IAT effect may be interpreted as a pure measure of the degree of association between concepts.

Abstract. The Flensburg health psychology group takes a salutogenic perspective and aims at developing innovative health promotion approaches. It stands in the interdisciplinary context of health and educational sciences. Our focus in research is on both, stress processes and lay representations of health and illness in the context of salutogenic theories of health. Basic and applied research activities aim at developing subject-oriented approaches of prevention and health promotion that are designed to promote health resources and competencies in selected settings and target groups. Current research is concentrated on socially disadvantaged groups, on occupational groups and on men to develop tailored health promotion approaches that reach groups in need and which show sustainable effects.
