<p>Typical cooling joints of granite have been believed to be orthogonal, and characteristic topography of granitic rocks like tors and boulder fields are interpreted in combination with the cooling joints and weathering. However, most of the previous studies were performed by the observation on the ground, and the 3D observation of cooling joints and the topographic features was not sufficient. We observed tors and boulder fields of granitic rocks using UAV and 3D modelling and found that columnar joints are typical for the granite that forms tors and that boulder fields are the accumulations of rock columns as well as boulders made by the spheroidal weathering of rock columns. Tors we observed were Mt. Kinabalu of Borneo, Mt. Mizugaki, Mt. Jizo, Mt. Gozaisho, Mt. Konze and 5 other locations in Japan. We observed that tors consist of polygonal rock columns with undulating joints, more irregularly shaped than the columnar joints of volcanic rocks. The cross-sectional areas of rock columns varied from 1 to 130 m^2, much larger than typical rock columns of volcanic rocks. The rock columns of granite are typically polygonal dipyramids, of which shapes may be dependent on the cooling history of granite. Boulder fields we observed was the Kui boulder fields in Hiroshima. We found that the boulder field is the accumulation of prismatic rock columns as well as rounded rock boulders. The prismatic rock columns had basal cross-sectional areas of 0.8 m^2 on average. The rock columns had chamfering cracks at corners, which are assumed to be made during cooling and to form preliminary outlines of core stones. Core stones had surface crusts or rindlets, which exfoliate and leave more rounded core stones.</p><p>  Rainstorm-induced landslides of weathered granite reflect weathering styles of granite: Landslides that occurred recently in Japan had three types, landslides of loosened layers of decomposed granite (or micro-sheeted granite), landslides of core-stone bearing materials, and landslides of saprolite. Landslides with core-stones were particularly destructive because of their inertia. Potential sites of such landslides could be predicted using columnar joints in fresh rocks as a clue.</p>

SummaryA detailed electron probe study of irontitanium oxide intergrowths from slowly cooled granitic rocks from the granulite grade, Archaean Scourian complex of north-west Scotland has yielded a wealth of information about magmatic and metamorphic temperatures, subsolidus cooling, and the behaviour of the fluid phase during cooling. Five stages are documented in the cooling history of granites and trondhjemites which include: (i) magmatic-subsolidus cooling (1035 °C–890 °C); (ii) granulite facies metamorphism and the accompanied expulsion of a hydrous fluid phase (890 °C–830 °C); (iii) subsolidus cooling following the peak of the granulite facies metamorphism (830 °C–660 °C); (iv) the localized reintroduction of water into the rocks during retrogression (660 °C–530 °C) and (v) subsolidus cooling and re-equilibration in the presence of a finite amount of H2O (530 °C–320 °C).

This article, based on newly declassified material from the Russian archives, deals with the fate of non-Communist parties in North Korea in the 1950s. Like the “people's democracies” in Eastern Europe, North Korea had (and still technically has) a few non-Communist parties. The ruling Communist party included these parties within the framework of a “united front,” designed to project the facade of a multiparty state, to control domestic dissent, and to establish links with parties in South Korea. The article traces the history of these parties under Soviet and local Communist control from the mid-1940s to their gradual evisceration in the 1950s.

Recurrent pyogenic cholangitis (RPC) is a condition found almost exclusively in individuals who lived in Southeast Asia. We report a case of a Caucasian veteran diagnosed with RPC after presenting with a 5-year history of recurrent fevers and abdominal pain 20 years after serving in Japan, South Korea, and Guam. Extensive evaluation led to the diagnosis of RPC with improvement after biliary decompression and antibiotics. Although rare, RPC should be considered in individuals who present with recurrent bouts of abdominal pain and fevers regardless of race.

Global challenges including overpopulation, climate change, and income inequality have increased, and a demand for sustainability has emerged. Decision-making for sustainable development is multifaceted and interlinked, owing to the diverse interests of different stakeholders and political conflicts. Analysing a situation from all social, political, environmental, and economic perspectives is necessary to achieve balanced growth and facilitate sustainable development. South Korea was among the poorest countries following the Korean War; however, it has developed rapidly since 1955. This growth was not limited to economic development alone, and the chronology of South Korean development may serve as a reference for development in other countries. Here, we explore the compressed growth of South Korea using a narrative approach and time-series, comparative, and spatial analyses. Developmental indicators, along with the modern history of South Korea, are introduced to explain the reasons for compressed growth. The development of the mid-latitude region comprising 46 countries in this study, where nearly half of Earth’s population resides, was compared with that of South Korea; results show that the developmental chronology of South Korea can serve as a reference for national development in this region.
