Background: Previous studies show that the use of do-it-yourself artificial pancreas system (DIYAPS) may be associated with better glycemic control characterized by improved estimated hemoglobin A1c (eHbA1c) and time in range among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, few studies have demonstrated the changes in laboratory-measured HbA1c, which is a more accepted index for glycemic control, after using a DIYAPS. Methods: This is a retrospective before-after study approaching patients who reported self-use of AndroidAPS. The main inclusion criteria included: T1D; aged ⩾18 years; having complete record of ⩾3 months of continuous AndroidAPS use; with laboratory-measured HbA1c and quality of life scale data before and after 3 months of AndroidAPS use; and not pregnant. The primary outcome was the change in HbA1c between baseline and 3 months after initiation of AndroidAPS use. Results: Overall, 15 patients (10 females) were included; the median age was 32.2 years (range: 19.2–69.4), median diabetes duration was 9.7 years (range: 1.8–23.7) and median baseline HbA1c was 7.3% (range: 6.4–10.1). The 3 months of AndroidAPS use was associated with substantial reductions in HbA1c [6.79% (SD: 1.29) versus 7.63% (SD: 1.06), p = 0.002] and glycemic variability when compared with sensor-augmented pump therapy. A lower level of fear of hypoglycemia [22.13 points (SD: 6.87) versus 26.27 points (SD: 5.82), p = 0.010] was also observed after using AndroidAPS. Conclusions: The 3 months of AndroidAPS use was associated with significant improvements in glucose management and quality of life among adults with T1D.

Abstract Purpose The Alcohol Quality of Life Scale (AQoLS) is accepted as a useful measure in assessing impact of alcohol use disorders (AUD) on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in Western cultures. We aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the AQoLS (AQoLS-Japan). Methods This was a 3-month, observational cohort study in patients undergoing routine treatment for AUD in Japan. HR-QoL was assessed using the AQoLS-Japan (34 items, 7 dimensions). Scale psychometrics were analyzed using correlative techniques. Results Data from 132 patients were analyzed. Inter-item and item-scale correlations for the AQoLS-Japan scale were moderate to strong. Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the AQoLS-Japan structure but there was evidence of interdependency among some items and factors. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for internal consistency ranged from 0.73 to 0.97, and intraclass correlation coefficients for scores between test (baseline) and retest (2 weeks) ranged from 0.65 to 0.82. Convergent and divergent validity and known-groups validity were supported. Evaluation of within-group change demonstrated that the AQoLS-Japan total and domains consistently demonstrated statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001 in all cases) in HR-QoL over time. Estimates for minimal clinically important difference on the AQoLS-Japan total score ranged from 13.2 to 18.2 for group-level change and from 2.4 to 15.7 for a group-level difference. Conclusions The AQoLS-Japan is a reliable and valid measure of HR-QoL that is able to demonstrate benefits associated with the routine treatment of AUD in Japan.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the psychodrama group therapy on the quality of life and depression of mothers whose children have been diagnosed with T1DM, to retrieve a new relationship of mutually interactive roles in the relationship between mothers who have necessarily regressed to physiological roles with children who have been diagnosed with T1DM, and to raise the adaptability of mothers. Method: Group study with mothers with children with type 1 diabetes was consisted of 22 sessions. Fourteen individuals were included in the study: six in the therapy group and eight in the control group. The convergent parallel design, a mixed research method was used in the study. The quantitative data from the research were acquired using a “Personal Information Form”, “Beck Depression Inventory Scale (BDI)”, and “World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Turkish Version (WHOQOL-BREF-TR)”. The qualitative research data were collected using “Group Records Subjected to a Qualitative Content Analysis” and the “Social Atom Orbit Content” of participants acquired in the group application with Moreno’s social atom orbit. Results: In the study, a statistically significant decrease was found between the BDI of the group members who participated in psychodrama application pre-test post-test scores (p<0.05). It was determined that WHOQOL-BREF-TR scale scores in the therapy group increased in the posttest. In this study, the mother-child relationship was redefined by using psychodrama techniques. The formerly regressed relationship has now been transformed to a relationship of mutual contact. Conclusion: The results of our group study demonstrated that administering the psychodrama technique reduces the levels of depression in mothers with children diagnosed with T1DM, increased their quality of life scores, and was effective in harmonizing with the lives and other roles in life of the mothers.
