Phylogenetic trees of the anamorphic basidiomycetous yeast genus Trichosporon Behrend, based on molecular sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region and the D1/D2 region of the large subunit of ribosomal (26S) DNA, are presented. This study includes three novel species from soils, Trichosporon vadense sp. nov. (type strain, CBS 8901T), Trichosporon smithiae sp. nov. (type strain, CBS 8370T) and Trichosporon gamsii sp. nov. (type strain, CBS 8245T), one novel species from an insect, Trichosporon scarabaeorum sp. nov. (type strain, CBS 5601T) and one species of unknown origin, Trichosporon dehoogii sp. nov. (type strain, CBS 8686T). The phylogenetic positions and physiological characteristics that distinguish the new taxa from related species, based partly on growth tests that are not traditionally used in yeast taxonomy (uric acid, ethylamine, l-4-hydroxyproline, tyramine and l-phenylalanine as sources of carbon and nitrogen, and polygalacturonate, quinate, 4-ethylphenol, phloroglucinol, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate and orcinol as sole carbon sources), are discussed. Assimilation of l-rhamnose and erythritol and maximum growth temperature were also used to delineate species.

A novel anamorphic yeast species is described to accommodate three isolates recovered from the guts of three different wood-boring insect larvae collected in Henan, central China. On the basis of sequence analyses of the D1/D2 domains of the large-subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer regions, the three strains are assigned to a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, although the formation of ascospores was not observed. These strains also exhibited a number of distinct morphological and physiological characteristics that clearly differentiated them from Wickerhamomyces mucosus, Candida odintsovae and Wickerhamomyces rabaulensis, the most closely related species. In view of the phenotypic differences and unique rRNA gene sequences, we consider that these three isolates represent a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, Wickerhamomyces mori sp. nov. The type strain is NYNU 1216T ( = CICC 1983T  = CBS 12678T).

The genus Blastobotrys, which now includes species previously assigned to the synonymous genera Arxula and Sympodiomyces, represents the anamorph of the ascosporogenous genus Trichomonascus. Six novel species are proposed for assignment to Blastobotrys. They were detected from their unique nucleotide sequences in large-subunit rDNA, ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 rDNA, mitochondrial small-subunit rDNA and the cytochrome oxidase II gene. The proposed novel species are Blastobotrys americana sp. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-6844T=CBS 10337T; substrate unknown; Kansas, USA), Blastobotrys illinoisensis sp. nov. (type strain NRRL YB-1343T=CBS 10339T; from forest debris; Illinois, USA), Blastobotrys malaysiensis sp. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-6417T=CBS 10336T; from soil; Malaysia), Blastobotrys muscicola sp. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-7993T=CBS 10338T; from moss; Louisiana, USA), Blastobotrys peoriensis sp. nov. (type strain NRRL YB-2290T=CBS 10340T; from a fungus; Peoria, IL, USA) and Blastobotrys raffinosifermentans sp. nov. (type strain NRRL Y-27150T=CBS 6800T; substrate unknown).

A novel strain of anamorphic yeast, designated strain NRRL Y-27208T, was isolated from concentrated grape juice in Cape Province, South Africa. Analysis of nuclear large subunit rRNA gene sequences from the D1/D2 domains separated the novel isolate from strains of Starmerella bombicola and Starmerella meliponinorum, as well as from species of the genus Candida that are members of the Starmerella clade. Compared to previously described species, strain NRRL Y-27208T is most closely related to S. bombicola but can be separated from this species by its ability to grow on d-ribose and erythritol. Strain NRRL Y-27208T produced sophorolipids that have an open chain structure similar to Candida batistae, Candida riodocensis and Candida stellata, which is in contrast to the closed chain sophorolipids produced by S. bombicola and Candida apicola. The analyses showed that NRRL Y-27208T ( = CBS 7267T) represents a novel species distinct from previously described species, for which the name Candida kuoi sp. nov. is proposed.
