Purpose This study aims to propose a sensitivity-based methodology for the optimum accommodation of distributed generation (DG) units in meshed power networks with appropriate technologies. The effect of load variation is incorporated into the proposed methodology to identify the most trusted locations for DG placement. Design/methodology/approach The effectiveness of minimizing active power losses is considered a key criterion. A priority list comprising both sensitivity indexes and realistic indicators is deduced to rank the optimum sites for the placement of DG units. A sorting index for distinguishing the suitable DG type(s) for each candidate location is organized. Three common DG types are considered in this work. The modified IEEE 30-bus meshed system is chosen to perform the proposed methodology. Findings Results demonstrate that the obtained priority index can be used to achieve the best real loss minimization rates. Numerous load buses can be safely excluded as candidate locations using the proposed approach. Consequently, the methodology can minimize the computational process of diagnosing the optimum sites for DG accommodation. Originality/value The findings determine that instead of installing many DG units at various locations with one DG type, a few certain load buses can be used to accommodate more than one DG type and significantly reduce losses.

In some power networks, components of frequency less than the frequency of the fundamental voltage harmonic called subharmonics or subsynchronous interharmonics occur. In this paper, the effect of voltage subharmonics on currents, power losses, speed fluctuations and electromagnetic torque is examined. The results of numerical computations using the finite element method for an induction cage motor of rated power of 5.6 MW and four motors of rated power of 200 kW with different numbers of poles are presented. An extraordinary harmful effect on high-power induction motors is demonstrated. Among other effects, voltage subharmonics cause significant torque pulsations whose frequencies may correspond to the elastic-mode natural frequency. Possible resonance can result in excessive torsional vibration and the destruction of a power train.

Abstract This paper presents a method for allocating active power losses in electric power networks to generators. A technique that uses current distribution factor is used to allocate losses to generator nodes. The core of the allocation scheme is based on graph theory and flows distribution in a network. Losses are only allocated based on the segment of a network that is used for power evacuation. Models of IEEE 14, 39, 57 and 118 test systems in PYPOWER 5.12 were used to test the scheme. It was observed that although the total network losses is minimised when optimal power flow is used for scheduling generation, however that does not translate to minimisation of loss allocation to some generators. The results obtained show that, the scheme can be used to allocate transmission network losses to generation nodes in electric power networks in a fair manner.

Relative losses of electric power during transmission and distribution in electric networks are considered in the paper. The components of commercial losses of electric power and their structure are given. From the presented data of technical and commercial losses of some areas of power networks of «ПАО «MRSK of Volga» – «Chuvashenergo» following the results of one month 2020, calculated with the use of «RAP-Standard» program according to the statements of power sales, it follows that total losses are from 11,6 to 17%. By the example of two sections of power grid companies of PAO MRSK of Volga – Chuvashenergo and the Republic of Tatarstan a comparison of commercial losses before and after the installation of intelligent power metering devices was made. It is estimated that the difference in electric power losses after installation of «smart» electric meters at both sites of the above mentioned enterprises was significantly reduced: at one site from 14 to 5.1%, and at the other – from 17.3 to 9.4%. It is shown that specific losses after installation of intellectual metering devices in Verkhneuslonsky district settlement of JSC «Grid Company» Buinskie Power Networks per one metering device decreased by 19.7%.

The Impact

The paper examines the impact of distributed generation facilities on the operating parameters of Iraq’s 33/11 kV distribution networks. The performed calculation of steady-state and post-emergency modes in the RastrWin3 software package showed that the networks are overloaded and therefore the voltage and power losses in the nodes and branches reach their limits. It was revealed that the most optimal technical measure that increases the voltage level in the load nodes and reduces power losses in the branches is the use of distributed generation, which includes diesel power plants and solar plants. The calculated operation modes considering connection of photo-diesel power stations to the network showed that the voltage and power losses in the nodes and branches of the circuit were significantly reduced

RF inductor power losses of ferrite-free electrode-less low pressure mercury inductively-coupled discharges excited in closed-loop dielectric tube were studied. The modelling was made within the framework of low pressure inductive discharge transformer model for discharge lamps with tubes of 16, 25 and 38 mm inner diam. filled with the mixture of mercury vapour (7.5×10–3 mm Hg) and argon (0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 mm Hg) at RF frequencies of 1, 7; 3.4 and 5.1 MHz and plasma power of (25–500) W. Discharges were excited with the help of the induction coil of 3, 4 and 6 turns placed along the inner perimeter of the closed-loop tube. It was found that the dependence of coil power losses, Pcoil, on the discharge plasma power, Ppl, had the minimum while Pcoil decreased with RF frequency, tube diameter and coil number of turns. The modelling results were found in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data; quantitative discrepancies are believed to be due skin-effect and RF electric field radial inhomogeneity that were not included in discharge modelling.
