I found this inscription in the ruins of a church called Agia Irenè, about a quarter of an hour's distance from the village of Apolakkia in Rhodes. This village is situated near the sea on the south-west side of the island (see my Travels and Discoveries, i., p. 198).This inscription contains part of two decrees, of which the first was passed by the κοινόν of the Euthalidai. The upper part of the stone being wanting, we only know the latter part of this first decree, from which we learn that a crown had been voted by the κοινόν to Sosikrates, son of Kleonymos, a Netteian, and that this honour was to be publicly proclaimed in the usual manner. We learn further that it was necessary that this decree should be confirmed by a Boulè, ‘senate,’ and Demos, ‘popular assembly,’ to the control of which the Euthalidai were subject.

The mound of Kilindir (fig. 1) lies about one kilometre south-west of the station of that name on the railway that runs from Salonika to Constantinople via Seres, Dedeagatch and Adrianople. A small stream called Gyol Ayak issues from the south side of Lake Doiran exactly at the modern village at Doiran station. This stream, after passing through nine kilometres of broken and ravined country, issues into more open ground just by the modern Chiflik which represents the pre-war site of the village of Kilindir.

The questions concerning the art of Pergamon, its characteristics and later influence, depend partly for their solution on the reconstruction and explanation of the fragments in Berlin. Much progress has been made in the work during the last year. The discovery which decided what was the breadth of the staircase, and what were the figures which adorned the left wing and the left staircase wall, has been already mentioned in the Hellenic Journal. It is now officially stated that the staircase was on the west side of the altar, although Bohn, in his survey of the site, at first conceived that this was impossible. Assuming that this point is now settled, we may note what is certain, or probable, or what is merely conjectural, in the placing of the groups. We know that the wing on the left of the staircase, and the left staircase-wall, were occupied by the deities of the sea and their antagonists: by Triton, Amphitrite, Nereus, and others which we cannot name. Among them, also, we may perhaps discern the figure of Hephaestos, and in their vicinity we must suppose Poseidon. On the right wing of the staircase, and around the south-west corner, we have good reason for placing Dionysos, with Cybele and her attendant goddesses, although the order of the slabs on which these latter are found is not the same as was formerly supposed.

The village of Kalývia Sokhás lies against the base of one of the massive foothills in which Taygetus falls to the plain three or four miles to the south of Sparta (Plate 26, 1). It is bounded by two rivers which flow down in deep clefts from the mountain shelf. The hillside above rises steeply to a summit which is girt with cliffs on all but the west side and cannot be much less than four thousand feet above sea level; this von Prott believed to be the peak of Taleton. Its summit is crowned by the ruins of a mediaeval castle which was undoubtedly built as a stronghold to overlook the Spartan plain; the only dateable object found there, a sherd of elaborate incised ware, indicates occupation at the time when the Byzantines were in possession of Mystra. The location of the other sites mentioned by Pausanias in this region remains obscure, but fortunately that of the Spartan Eleusinion has not been in doubt since von Prott discovered a cache of inscriptions at the ruined church of H. Sophia in the village of Kalývia Sokhás. In 1910 Dawkins dug trenches at the foot of the slope immediately above the village and recovered a fragment of a stele relating to the cult of the goddesses and pieces of inscribed tiles from the sanctuary. The abundance of water in the southern ravine led von Prott to conclude that the old town of Bryseai with its cult of Dionysus also lay at Kalývia Sokhás; but no traces of urban settlement have come to light at the village, and the name rather suggests copious springs such as issue from the mountain foot at Kefalári a mile to the north where ancient blocks are to be seen in the fields.

An unusual occurrence of ultrabasic material was located in the eastern Sukkertoppen region during the reconnaissance mapping programme of 1977, the findings of which were described by Allaart et al. (1978). It occurs on a small exposure on the west side of a north-pointing peninsula in the middle of the large nunatak Majorqap alangua (65°53'N, 50°40'W), to the north-east of the Majorqaq valley (Hall, 1978, fig. 21). The area is composed predominantly of a suite of granulite facies granitic gneisses which contain numerous enclaves of pyroxene-bearing amphibolites, and locally anorthositic and gabbroic rocks similar to those seen in the Fiskenæsset anorthosite complex (Myers, 1975). The gneisses in the centre af the nunatak are highly irregular in orient at ion, occupying the complex interseclion af closures af at least two major fold phases. A belt af amphibolitcs forms the cliff at the south-west tip af Majorqap alangua. Related rocks occur in arnphibolite facies in the acea around the lakc Qardlit taserssuat immediately to the soulh (Hall, 1978).

Abstract A three component array of Willmore seismometers and a hydrophone were used to record the seismic events at Marathon, Ontario during the Lake Superior crustal experiment of 1963. The first part of each record was digitized and from an analysis of the particle motion diagrams, apparent angles of emergence of the seismic rays were determined. It was found that these angles can be used to distinguish between P2 and Pn waves. When the shot distance was less than 220 km., the first arrivals emerged with an apparent angle of 40-50°. As the shot distance was increased beyond 220 km., the rays emerged with an apparent angle of 51-70°. The apparent velocities of the (40-50) and the 51-70°) rays were 6.6 km/sec and 8.2 km/sec respectively. Further analysis of the results showed that the Moho below Marathon dipped downwards toward the south west with an angle of approximately 4°, indicating that the crust is considerably thicker on the south west side of Marathon than on the north east. A study of the ray azimuths gave some evidence of the presence of lateral inhomogeneities in the crust.

The village of Hacilar is situated in the Vilayet of Burdur in South-west Anatolia, about 25 km. west of Burdur itself on the main road to Yeşilova and Denizli. The chalcolithic site lies about 1·5 km. west of the village and just beyond the orchards, which are irrigated by a plentiful spring at the foot of a great limestone crag which overlooks the village. It is this spring which since neolithic times has been the main reason for more or less continuous occupation in this region. Apart from the neolithic and early chalcolithic site at Hacılar there is a large Early Bronze Age mound on the northern outskirts and a classical site to the south-west of the village.The prehistoric site is an inconspicuous mound, about 150 metres in diameter, rising to a height of not more than 1·50 m. above the level of the surrounding fields (Fig. 1 and Pl. XXIXa). The entire surface of the mound is under cultivation and a series of depressions show the holes made by a local antique-dealer in search of painted pots and small objects. About 1 km. west of the site runs the Koca Çay, the ancient Lysis, and on the eastern scarp of this river valley lies the cemetery of the Early Bronze Age settlement. Not a single burial has yet been found in the chalcolithic or neolithic levels of our site and it is therefore not unreasonable to suggest that its cemetery also may eventually be located there.

From the modern town of Kos, on the site of the ancient capital at the north-east extremity of the island, to the village of Kephalos at the southwest end is a ride of eight hours.The village stands on a chalky plateau which beyond the isthmus marks the beginning of the mountain district of south-west Kos. This in turn is a repetition on a smaller scale of the mountain region, at the other end of the island, which forms the lofty termination to the long central tableland. The highest points of the mountain district are towards the south-east where the fall to the sea is very rapid. The highest neighbouring peak, Mount Ziní, is about an hour distant from the village in a south-easterly direction, while all that lies to the north-west of the main range is high pastoral country with many torrent beds.

In this paper, we discuss the ritual practices and ritualization in the Bronze Age society on Got- land based on archaeological investigations of cairn milieus and stone ship contexts. We explore whether erected stones and demarcations on the south to south-west side of the Bronze Age cairns are the norm and whether this phenomenon oc- curred during the Bronze Age. We also discuss whether our archaeological research can support long-term use of cairn milieus for ritual purposes.

Surface velocity and deformation, radar sounding, and aerial photography data are used to describe the flow of Ross Ice Shelf around Crary Ice Rise. A continuous band of crevasses around the ice rise now allows the complete boundary to be mapped for the first time. The dynamics of three distinctly different areas of ice flow are studied. Just up-stream of the ice rise, there is a region of ice rumples dominated by intense longitudinal compression (0.01 a−1) and lateral tension. On the south-west side of the ice rise, intense shear (0.03 a−1) dominates, with the boundary layer of affected ice-shelf motion extending over 20 km from the ice-rise edge into the ice shelf. North-west of the ice rise, a crevasse-free block of ice, 40 km × 7 km, appears to have separated from the main ice rise and is now moving with the ice shelf. We refer to such moving blocks of ice as rafts. The separation of this raft is calculated to have occurred 20 ± 10 years ago. Other possible rafts are identified, including one on the south-west side of the ice rise which appears to be in the process of separating. Mechanisms for the formation of rafts are discussed.

AbstractCalculations of the regional variation of net mass balance around Crary Ice Rise, Antarctica, show significant rates of thickening up-stream of the ice rise and significant thinning down-stream (assuming zero basal melting or freezing). Thickening also is occurring on the south-west side of the ice rise nearest the Transantarctic Mountains. These imbalances imply migration of the rise and help explain its current non-equilibrium shape. The pattern of a suture line down-stream of the rise indicates a quasi-periodic mechanism of rift formation.
