Summer Zooplankton communities in the inshore region of southeastern Lake Michigan were dominated by small species during the 1970s, suggesting that size-selective fish predation pressures were intense. Abundances of alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), the dominant planktivore in the 1970s, declined in recent years, especially over 1982–84. Despite decreased alewife predation, small zooplankton taxa continued to predominate. Moreover, zooplankton standing stocks declined 10-fold during 1982–84, suggesting that predatory pressures had intensified. Concurrent with the alewife population decrease was a major increase in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) abundances. As a probable consequence of intense predation pressures exerted by abundant yellow perch, zooplankton standing stocks were severely reduced. Yellow perch populations may have been adversely affected by food limitation, especially in summer 1984 when zooplankton standing stocks were only 3% of their average level over 1975–81.

Chaoborus populations were studied in two lakes in which fish predation was experimentally reduced, and in a reference lake. In Tuesday Lake, major reduction of fish predation led to substantial increases in density of Chaoborus punctipennis. Analysis of crop contents and estimates of consumption rates suggested that C. punctipennis caused declines of rotifer and copepod populations following the manipulations. In Peter Lake, lesser changes in fish predation caused no major change in density of Chaoborus flavicans, perhaps because food limitation compensated for effects of reduced predation. In both Peter Lake and the reference lake, Paul Lake, C. flavicans preyed heavily and selectively on Daphnia less than about 1.4 mm in total length. Bioenergetic calculations indicated that up to 46% of the daphnids were consumed daily. At some times of the year, certain zooplankton populations (especially noncolonial rotifers, small copepods, and small cladocerans) were strongly influenced by Chaoborus predation.

In a large (70 ha) shallow (<2m deep) eutrophic wetland investigated between November 1988 and October 1989, there were marked seasonal changes in water quality and the composition of zooplankton, and to a lesser extent phytoplankton communities, with three distinct groupings evident: summer, winter–spring and autumn. Summer conditions were characterized by high levels of total P (689198 ˜g L –1 ), N limitation, blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa (mean chlorophyll a = 46630 ˜g L –1 ) and zooplankton communities dominated by cyclopoid copepods (Mesocyclops sp. and Microcyclops sp.). Winter–spring conditions were characterized by Secchi disk transparencies to the bed (chlorophyll a <50 ˜g L –1 ), low total P (7140 ˜g L–1 ) and zooplankton communities dominated byDaphnia carinata King. Autumn conditions represented an intermediate state between these two. Significant linear relationships were recorded between chlorophyll a and total P and between chlorophyll a and D. carinata. Abundances of hemipteran predators (Anisops sp.) were correlated with D. carinata, but the relationship did not appear to be causal. The decline in D. carinata in summer was attributed to food limitation. Reductions in nutrient inputs to the lake in 1990–91, resulted in improved water quality and high abundances of D. carinata during summer.

Abstract Intensive studies of Nelson Lake, a Sudbury area lake of intermediate pH ~5.7), were begun in 1975. The chemistry of the lake was typical of that of most PreCambrian Shield lakes except that low alkalinities and high sulphate concentrations were observed along with elevated heavy metal levels. After raising the pH of Nelson Lake to 6.4 by addition of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3, the metals were reduced to background concentrations. Phytoplankton and Zooplankton communities, which at pH of 5.7 were typical of PreCambrian lakes, were not affected by the experimental elevation of lake pH.

Summary Conservation measures providing food-rich habitats through agri-environment schemes (AES) have the potential to affect the demography and local abundance of species limited by food availability. The European Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur is one of Europe’s fastest declining birds, with breeding season dietary changes coincident with a reduction in reproductive output suggesting food limitation during breeding. In this study we provided seed-rich habitats at six intervention sites over a 4-year period and tested for impacts of the intervention on breeding success, ranging behaviour and the local abundance of territorial turtle doves. Nesting success and chick biometrics were unrelated to the local availability of seed-rich habitat or to the proximity of intervention plots. Nestling weight was higher close to human habitation consistent with an influence of anthropogenic supplementary food provision. Small home ranges were associated with a high proportion of non-farmed habitats, while large home ranges were more likely to contain seed-rich habitat suggesting that breeding doves were willing to travel further to utilize such habitat where available. Extensively managed grassland and intervention plot fields were selected by foraging turtle doves. A slower temporal decline in the abundance of breeding males on intervention sites probably reflects enhanced habitat suitability during territory settlement. Refining techniques to deliver sources of sown, natural, and supplementary seed that are plentiful, accessible, and parasite-free is likely to be crucial for the conservation of turtle doves.

Summary Structural vegetation damage and food limitation are important effects of major hurricanes, particularly for fruit/seed-eating, forest-dependent Caribbean birds with restricted distributions and small populations, such as the Bridled Quail-dove Geotrygon mystacea. Motivated by the lack of abundance estimates, corrected for detection probability, we conducted distance-sampling surveys inside and outside the Quill National Park each May in 2016-2019. Detection mode was the most important covariate, with others receiving no support from the data. Detectability of available single individuals and clusters of individuals within 60 m of transect centrelines averaged 0.957 ± 0.114 standard error for audio detections, 0.434 ± 0.052 for visual detections, and 0.693 ± 0.064 for detection modes combined. Availability averaged 0.475 ± 0.138 and the product of detectability and availability averaged 0.329 ± 0.098. Density averaged 1.459 ± 0.277 individuals ha-1 and population size averaged 642 ± 122 individuals in 440 ha. Density did not differ along and away from forest trails, but was higher inside than outside the park and at elevations within 201-400 m than 100-200 m and 401-600 m. Density declined by 76% after hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. We suggest that major hurricanes together with free-ranging livestock overgrazing degraded foraging habitats, limited food supply, and caused a population bottleneck. Our methodology can be implemented across the distribution range to assess population status and trends and evaluate the result of management actions at key conservation sites. Bridled Quail-dove populations probably were declining on most islands before the 2017 hurricanes and population status warrants revision.
