The purpose of this paper is to give an example of the manner in which aesthetic criticism may also serve the needs of historical and philological criticism. As an example of procedure, a specific Old French prose romance is to be studied from an aesthetic as well as from an historical point of view. One main question will be raised with regard to each episode of the romance: “What is the purpose of this episode in the context of the narrative?” While the episodes have meaning in themselves, many episodes will acquire additional meaning from their position among the others. Consideration will be given the structure of the romance as a source for the understanding of the entire plot. This method of approach, the derivation of meaning from structure, may be said to follow a principle of aesthetic criticism. If the results obtained by such an approach seem acceptable, the method can be justified on aesthetic grounds. More difficult to settle, however, and the main concern of this inquiry, is the problem of whether or not such a method can lead to the finding of data valuable not only to the aesthetic critic but also to the historian and the philologist.

The genesis of the Greek prose romance is still in large part shrouded in darkness, in spite of the researches of Erwin Rohde, one of the greatest scholars of the last generation. The reasons are evident; the material at our disposal is far too scanty, the loss of early specimens of this literary form is far too great to allow of a flawless reconstruction of the history of the Greek romance. The same lacunae have also prevented us from obtaining as complete an insight into the sources of the extant romances as would be desirable. Rohde conjectured that the genre was the result of a skilful combination of mythological narrative and adventure novel; Warren thought that the Greek prose romance had about the same origin and took the same development as the old French prose romance—that is, it developed out of the epic. At all times scholars have been aware of the fact that the great role which love plays in the Greek romance has a parallel in the tragedies of Euripides, who may be considered the first tragic poet to introduce the love theme on the stage. But so far as I am aware, it has not been pointed out that Euripides was drawn upon for whole episodes in order to enrich the plot of the novel. Yet such seems to have been the case for one of the best-known passages of the Apollonius Romance, as I shall endeavour to show in the following pages.

The earliest authenticated printed version of the Amadís de Gaula, a prose romance of chivalry reworked and expanded into four books (and a subsequently published sequel) by the Spaniard Garcí Rodríguez de Montalvo, appeared at Saragossa in 1508. Between this date and 1492 an earlier edition of Montalvo's work was undoubtedly published, probably in Castile. As we shall see, this may or may not have been partly or wholly identical in content with a MS. Amadis embodying certain changes in the Briolanja episode made at the instigation of a Prince Alfonso of Portugal. Before 1379 there was an Amadis in three books circulating in Castile, and about this same time a version, perhaps the same, by one Vasco Lobeira of Portugal was extant. Moreover, there was an Amadis of unknown proportions, but presumably of one or two books only, as early as 1345–50. I shall show that this version may have been written in 1331. But no version, I repeat, survives except Montalvo's.
