Purpose This paper aims to examine the economic costs of protests at micro-to-firm, market sector and aggregate levels. This paper then develops institutional policy recommendations for allaying these costs. Design/methodology/approach This paper conducts a case study of the anti-extradition bill protests in Hong Kong by examining news articles, online discussions and economic indices from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department. This paper further develops policy insights from an analysis of the Hong Kong Basic Law (the city’s mini-constitution) and insights from economic research. Findings This paper discovers that the protests may have caused overall volatility in firms, market sectors and the overall economy, measured in production disruptions, revenue losses and declines in employment. Among Hong Kong’s four major industries, the most severely stunted market sectors were tourism and retail, as well as trading and logistics, whereas financial services and professional and producer services experienced mixed effects. This paper develops two institutional policy recommendations for government and corporate policymaking for reducing volatility and ultimately safeguarding economic growth: the separation of political ideology and economics; the systematic use of public opinion analytics to pre-test the reception of policies. Practical implications Corporate strategists and policymakers would benefit from and advance the economy by better insulating business decision-making from political biases and by investing in public opinion analytics. Originality/value Much of economic theory treats social transformations as externalities. This paper adopts a different approach by foregrounding the role that social transformations play in shaping the economy. To this end, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this paper is among the first to examine the anti-extradition bill protests of Hong Kong, arguably the most significant and widespread protests in the city’s and the region’s history.

Abstract Background: The identity and utility research carries significant role in the modern economics. There are financial outputs, if we can moderate appropriate the student’s and worker’s identities. Objectives: The paper examines the possible use of the utility model and theoretical principles of Akerlof and Kranton (2000, 2002) in higher education. The examined aspects are utility, identity and role. Methods/Approach: The paper aims at employing the model of Akerlof in higher education and how the terms identity and utility can be interpreted in this environment. Results: To sum up, we can say that while case studies and certain experiments seem to justify the model of Akerlof and Kranton, there are few scientific results in higher education to rely on that prove the relationship between identity and utility. Conclusions: It can be deduced that the identity of students has some economic impacts. Institutional policy can increase not only the success of its students but also their income through identity changes.

Resumo: O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as diretrizes e práticas socioambientais implantadas na Unifebe. O resultado poderá subsidiar a elaboração de projetos e práticas docente e discente, bem como novas políticas institucionais para o meio ambiente. Um questionário foi aplicado com docentes e discentes da instituição, e foram analisados parâmetros pela teoria clássica dos testes (índice de facilidade, índice de discriminação, média e desvio padrão das respostas positivas do teste e intervalo de confiança para a média do total dos escores). Os resultados apontam a necessidade de a Unifebe criar uma política institucional clara, formalmente estabelecida, divulgada e implantada em todas as instâncias, pois diretrizes e políticas amplas que definam e determinem objetivos e metas devem preceder as práticas antes de serem aplicadas na instituição. Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the guidelines and environmental practices implemented at Unifebe. The result may support the development of projects and teaching and learning practices as well as new institutional policies for the environment. A questionnaire was administered to teachers and students of the institution, and parameters were analyzed by classical test theory (index of ease, discrimination index, mean and standard deviation of the positive responses of the test and confidence interval for the mean of total scores). The results indicate the need for Unifebe to create a clear institutional policy, formally established, disseminated and implemented at all levels, as guidelines and policies broad that define and determine goals and objectives must precede practice before being applied in the institution.
